Wow is all I can say after reading this story. If I thought the first book in the series was awesome this one was unforgettable. This enjoyable and entertaining read is fast paced jammed packed with adventure, action, and of course steamy romance. But that not all this isn’t your typical PNR and since I’m not one to leave spoilers you’ll just have to check it out for yourself. I’m definitely looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I voluntarily read and review this ARC no monetary compensation was received the opinions I have expressed are my own.
great series & great read
My Thoughts – 5 out of 5 Unicorns – I loved it!!!
***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!! Yes, I received a review copy of this book, but no one tells me what to think, feel, or write about any book!
The cover is definitely eye catching!
This is the 2nd book in the series, and it is for adults only due to the steamy content. While reading in order is not required, it is much better if you do because when previous events are mentioned you will know and the characters are richer. I want to mention that a woman is battered in the book, so if you are sensitive this topic take appropriate measures.
This book was very interesting and action packed. I was hooked from the beginning. I didn’t want to put it down at all. I already loved Vala from book 1 because she is awesome, but in this book, she is even more so. Her tolerance and understanding is epic. Thorin was not high in my favorite list, but he is definitely something else. Vala opens your eyes to him as you read, and it is an amazing journey. I was secretly hoping something would happen, but it didn’t. I am definitely hooked on this series.
Jessie always develops the most amazing stories that leave me wanting more and loving her HEAs. I can’t wait to see what she cooks up next!
I highly recommend to sci-fi fans who love space travel, treachery, and romance especially if you liked book 1!
I started out with the second book in this series (this one), because I downloaded the sample of this one before I saw the first book. I will be getting the first book at some point because I like Vala and Thorin, and they are apparently in the first book as well.
The Kelderan people think that infertile women are useless because they can’t help to continue to species. Those women, called the Barren, are specially marked and live in citadels. They serve their people are and legislated to be invisible. Even though Vala is a Barren, she knows that she is so much more than that. She helped rescue a princess and a human, and learned how to fly a shuttle. She got to be on another planet and experience the freedom of that planet, and not being treated like an invisible being of no worth. Vala has fought for the right to go and help colonize that planet.
Thorin is a general who has worked hard to overcome what he sees as his shameful birth. He wants to be seen as a male of honor, but because of what happened to his mother during the war, he is only 1/2 Kelderan, and the other half isn’t a peaceful half at all. He has to hide who he is and is ashamed of the visions and dreams he has. When Vala comes his way and is assigned as his servant on their journey to the colony, something happens and he can’t avoid her, no matter what.
The connection between them is intense. Vala is a strong, strong character. She has learned her worth and has learned to give zero f&*(&^ks about what anyone else thinks of her. Their opinions of her are none of her business. She helps Thorin to discover who he is and helps him on all his missions, no matter what they are. I really, really liked her a lot. She is ready to go stomp out injustices and make things better for everyone in her society. I really admire her for that and for what she wants to do. I also really like Thorin for his willingness to recognize how his beliefs are skewed when confronted by Vala and his willingness to change them. He really didn’t have to trust her or treat her as he did. That takes a lot of strength to do. Overall, the two of them are going to be high one my favorite book couples list. I really want more books about them.
I love this Sci-Fi series, leave it to Ms. Donovan to make it great!
Vala Yarlen a Barren finally got her life’s wish, she was given permission to leave her barren Citadel in Kelderan and colonize in Jasvar where her friends Princess Kalahn and the Prince Kason’s mate the human Taryn live. There she will be able to be herself eventually, not having to bow to any male as is required of her kind on her planet, she may even be able to someday pilot her own ship. When she boards the Colony Ship bound with 5000 Colonists to Jasvar, she comes face to face with the very serious and stoic General Thorin, why he makes her heart pump she does not know, but a Barren could never hope for a future with such a man.
General Thorin has always kept his secret, has had the strength to control his dark side from all, but when he catches a glimpse of Vala the gorgeous white haired Barren he nearly loses control of his well kept secret. But maybe there is still hope for him, if his possession can calm his beast and they are allowed to be together. But more important, will she accept him.
The Barren is the 2nd book in Jessie Donovan’s new paranormal world known as The Kelderan Runic Warriors. Book two is centered around Vala Yarlen, a Barren, marked as a female who can’t bare children and Thorin Jarrell, a general for the Kelderan army. Both characters were introduced to you in book one.
Vala, General Thorin and a large group of people are aboard a spaceship, which Thorin himself is leading, and headed for a new colony. They are leaving their home in Keldera and heading to Jasvar, to help save their people from dying and to try and build a better way of life for all. Vala has been stationed to help General Thorin in all matters, which she is upset about but will rise above. They do not have the best of relationships and she’s afraid he might judge her for her previous attempts at helping others. To him she is merely a barren, who should reflect her eyes to the ground at all times and whom he has no use for. She sees him as a hard ass General that nobody likes but seem to respect. Along the way they are hit with one unforeseen problem after another and have decided to work together and to trust each other in order to survive.
Vala learns a secret about who the General really is and why he is the way he is. She is very understanding of his secret and begins to see him in a different light. She also tries to help him see that he is more then just his secret and they end up bonding and falling in love. Which of course causes more problems and secrets to be kept because a General can not take a bride below him, and there is nothing below a Barren level.
A new enemy is brought to life in this book along with a secret that you never saw coming. The book is filled with action, adventure, romance and sexually charged scenes. There is also one scene involving abuse that sensitive readers may find disturbing but is the build up for the next book and very well written.
While reading in order isn’t necessary you’d probably find the second book more enjoyable if you read The Conquest, book one.
I was given a copy of this book from the author for an honest review.
