Even before surviving the Scorpius bacterium, Greyson Storm was a lone wolf navigating mine fields. As a kid, he learned to take a hit and find safety. As an adult, he joined the military and quickly learned how to protect and defend. When the world ended, he created a mercenary camp with military precision, no entanglements, and a vow to keep a deathbed promise. As part of that vow, he … kidnapped Maureen Shadow, but now that he has let her go, her blue eyes and dangerous spirit won’t stop haunting him…As possibly the only Biotechnology Engineer still living, Maureen Shadow might be humanity’s one hope to survive the aftermath of Scorpius, making her frighteningly valuable to both allies and enemies. Even after sexual passions explode between her and Greyson, she’s not sure which camp he belongs to–friend or foe? Worse yet, survival may mean thwarting his prime mission, putting her in even more peril. When danger and seduction collide, the flames might burn them both up…

Storm Gathering is the fourth book in the Scorpius Syndrome series by Rebecca Zanetti which looks at the relationship between Greyson Storm (a lone wolf, previous sniper and leader of the Merc’s) and Maureen Black (biotechnology engineer, loner and nerd) trying to survive not only the virus but also the President and everything else that is thrown in their way.
If you have read previous books in this series, you would have been introduced to Greyson and Maureen already. Greyson has an alternative group to the one that Maureen lives in which is ran by men who are hard and trying to survive whilst recruiting only the strong. Grey has an ulterior motive which is to find the man responsible not only for the virus but also for the death of his friend. To win allegiance with Vanguard (where Mo is from), he kidnaps her in the hopes that she will help him with the knowledge of growing his groups own food, whilst trying not to fall in love with Mo.
Mo lives in Vanguard with her brother, Raze and the rest of the Vanguard elite. Although a bio-technical engineer, her first love is food sources and finding food that she can propagate and then grow for the dwindling population. Being kidnapped by Grey was not in her plan and although she is furious to begin with, you see the development of the story as you read it.
This story has a lot going on, not only with Mo’s bombshell and what that means for her and Grey, but also the relationship that Grey has with both the President and Vanguard. This story is certainly about people choosing sides and not necessarily for the right reasons. There is a lot of action in this book and I would recommend reading previous books in this series so that you know who is who. Characters such as Raze and Jax also have a predominant role in this book and as you read everything will start falling into place.
The chemistry between Grey and Mo is hot and it was interesting to watch the development of their story as they thought about which side they were on. I can’t wait for the next book in this series which will feature Damon. If you like action, intrigue and some hot moments, then this is a series for you!

Review:
I was really looking forward to this book. Grey was intriguing me in the other books and I liked Maureen (Mo) as well. She seemed like someone that wouldn’t roll over and have someone walk all over her.
What is this book about:
This books begins around the the time of the first book. We see how Maureen en Greyson meet. After a few chapters we are transported back to the current time. Maureen has decided that she will go back to merc territory to see if she can work her magic with the green houses. That is her only reason, or so she tells herself. She has come to care about Greyson, there is more to him than she initially thought.
Greyson tries to tell himself that he only wants mo to come to his territory so she can try and solve the current food problem they are facing. But that’s not all of it, he wants the feisty, beautiful, strong woman for more than that. He likes her and he decided its time he lets her know. And once he has her, he wont let her go. But Greyson and Maureen will have a surprise coming their way. Something they didn’t expect at all.
In the overlaying story we still have the president being hell bent on getting lynn, and he is showing how far he will go to take out vanguard and it’s leaders. Lynn, Vinnie and the others are trying to find a cure for scorpius and secure man’s survival for the long run.
What did I like about this book:
I was actually really intrigued by Penelope and Marcus. I am a sucker for a broken characters and Marcus is really broken. The only person he seems to respond to is Penelope. I want to know what happened to him and see him grow and heal.
I’m not let down or disappointed by this book because I’m not, but I expected a bit better from Greyson. The entire book he played both sides a bit. He didn’t work for the president or something but despite him saying he was thinking about siding with vanguard, he didn’t really. He kept it up in the air for a long time.
All of the guys where borderline alpha assholes in this book. Mo kept saying she wanted to go to merc territory and help they where all like, you’re not going, we’ll bring you back etc etc as if she was kidnapped again. I get that it looked like she was but they didn’t really listen to her and she is a capable, smart woman.
I’m glad she retaliated and let them know that she can make her own choices. I’m really happy that she stood up to the guys and stood behind her own morals.
Overall I liked their story, it progressed nicely. This book mostly focused on the couple and not on a million other things happening as well. It was all there but not as prominent as in the other books.
I liked Damon, but I’m not sure about his and aprils book. We didn’t see all that much of April besides her showing up here and there. And their book will mostly focus on the pure, I think atleast.
I will read their story but I’m more excited to learn more about Penelope and Marcus. I hope we’ll get a release date for their book soon!
Rating:
4 I liked it stars.
Even though this is the 4th book in the series I am going to call it Part 3 of an ongoing story. The first part gave us the info on the virus origin and the Brigade. The second dealt with Vanguard which is a place where Jax Mercury has set up for survivors of the Scorpius virus which he defends along with other men. The third is about The Mercenaries. I’ve always been fascinated with Greyson Storm and his military band of mercenaries and was looking forward to his story.
While I was happy to finally get his background and story and to know what really went on between him and Maureen Shadow I wasn’t too happy that time wise we didn’t move very far from the other 3.5 books in the series. I am not fond of the trope of having each book basically happen in the same time frame just getting a different couple’s story during same events that already happened. It gets stale rehashing the same events over and over in multiple books.
We did get more info and page time with Dr Paige and Marcus who is Jax’s brother who had been experimented on and is one crazy dude. Their story should be interesting.. And we also got to see the setup of what the next book is going to be about which will finally move us forward. Some big things happen at the end of this book which means lots of changes for the Vanguard and Mercenaries so I’m hoping things get back on track cause I’ve really enjoyed this series so far.
One of the best books I’ve read in ages. Rebecca zanetti always injects humour along with sizzling romance
I just started reading Urban Fantasy…suggested by a friend. I found this series Scorpius Syndrome. Love it as much as it scares me. This book is about the amazing Alpha male Greyson Storm who is equally matched by Maureen who gives as good as she gets. You will laugh at how he is totally amazed as well as dumbfounded by her. I recommend this book but also suggest you read the series in order!
Rebecca Zanetti can do no wrong as far as I’m concerned!!!
Love this series!
4.25stars–STORM GATHERING is the fourth full-length installment in Rebecca Zanetti’s adult SCORPIUS SYNDROME cross genre Sci-Fi/ UF/Dystopian series focusing on a biological pandemic sweeping the planet that has already killed 99% of the world’s population. This is US Marine sniper Greyson Storm, and biotechnology engineer Maureen Shadow’s (Raze’s sister) story line that looks at life in the aftermath, and the fallout from an unknown bacteria-from space. For more background information and some history, there is a prequel novella-SCORPIUS RISING-which can be found in the ON THE HUNT anthology (August 2015).
NOTE: Some of the premise of STORM GATHERING runs parallel to and crosses over with the events of book three-Justice Ascending.
SOME BACKGROUND: Some of those infected with the biological virus have survived to become something known as a Ripper, but there are two types of Rippers inhabiting the world-one is a zombie like creature who feasts on the living; the other is a survivor whose brain has been altered resulting in a stronger, more powerful enhanced human being sometimes bordering on the sociopath ideology with delusions of grandeur, obsession and hate. If you are a fan of the series The Walking Dead (or Mad Max), you will see many similarities in the story line premise including the search for food and supplies, attacks of the ‘undead’, and various groups of survivors vying for power and control.
Told from several third person perspectives including Greyson and Maureen STORM GATHERING continues to focus on the struggle to survive as the depleting inventory at the Vanguard compound and Mercenary territories begins to push at the fragile hold each has on their safety, sanity and dwindling reserves. As head of the ‘Merc’ faction of post-apocalyptic warriors Greyson Storm is desperate to find more food and weapons for his growing population of forgotten refugees. Enter biotechnology engineer Maureen Shadow and the woman with whom Greyson will fall in love. What ensues is the back and forth, tepid relationship between the Vanguard compound and Mercenary territory; the struggle in their search for supplies; and the continuing attacks by the government’s Elite Forces, and the self-proclaimed president of the USA- a man once infected by the Scorpius virus who has since become a sociopathic Ripper. Greyson Storm is on a mission not only to protect the woman that he loves but to take down a tyrant desperate to take control of the few remaining resources .
The relationship between Greyson and Maureen begins as a one-night stand following Maureen’s abduction from the Vanguard compound. Greyson’s attempts to secure a future for the many mouths he has to feed finds our hero taking risks including the kidnapping of the woman with whom he will fall in love. The $ex scenes are intimate and provocative without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text. The sexual attraction is palpable; their energy is passionate and sensual. Greyson’s protective instinct goes into over-drive where our story line heroine is concerned.
There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Tace and Sami (Justice Ascending), Vivi and Raze (Shadow Falling) , Lynn and Jax (Mercury Striking), as well as Greyson’s second in command Damon Winter, Marcus and Dr. Penelope. The requisite evil, aside from the Scorpius virus, has many faces including President Bret Atherton, and his Vice President Lake. Damon Winter’s story is next in Winter Igniting.
The world building continues to focus on the search for a cure. With the growing number of scientists and researchers under protection at the Vanguard Compound and Mercenary headquarters, the intrepid group of survivors starts locating some of the hidden files that focus on the bacteria and a potential cure. A possible merger between the two camps may be required if everyone is to survive the ongoing wars, and the raging wild fires burning out of control.
STORM GATHERING is an edgy, encouraging and engaging story line. The premise will captivate your attention; the characters are colorful, animated and determined; the romance is hopeful and seductive.
Greyson is the leader of the Mercs, a total bad a$$, and a bit of an anti-hero. He’s tough and takes no prisoners well, no prisoners except for biotechnical engineer, Maureen Shadow. He needs her as leverage so he kidnaps her (but then promises to let her go if he gets what he wants). Maureen does not want to go with Greyson and fights him the whole time…until feeling start to change and she sees Greyson for the man he really is…the one meant for her.
I really enjoyed this book. There was so much going on…lot’s of danger, intrigue, drama, violence, and sexy-times. Greyson and Maureen are just so good together…even when they’re fighting it out. I’ve missed a couple of books in the series which I’ll probably go back and read. You get some background in the book but I would recommend reading the other books in the series.
*I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Raz Ink LLC, via NetGalley. My opinions are honest and my own*
Storm Gathering is the 4th book Of Rebecca Zanetti’s awesome Scorpius Syndrome Series. It’s about a plaque that is trying to wipe out life as we know it and the strong group of willed people who won’t let the human race die out. Of course there are also groups out there that just want to control the world not save it. Therefore making the battle to just survive that much harder.
Storm Gathering centers around Greyson Storm, the leader of a mercenary camp full of men only and a former sniper. Greyson made a vow to revenge the death of his best friend by killing his killer. In order to do that he kidnaps Maureen Shadow a Biotechnology Engineer and the sister of a very dangerous man, Raze Shadow, lieutenant of a rival group of survivors called Vanguard. Raze will stop at nothing to get Maureen back and Grey will stop at nothing to revenge his friend.
Both Maureen and Grey have been introduced to us in previous books through out the series and only part of their story was told. Grey kidnapped Maureen, her brother got her back, but what happened during the time she was held captive? Well you find out in Storm Gathering along with a few shocks you didn’t see coming. This book is very fast paced and full of complex characters you can’t help fall in love with and root for along the way. It’s full of non stop action from page one.
An excellent addition to an already awesome series and I highly recommend you read them in order. Rebecca Zanetti goes back and tells us parts of the story that have not yet been told while also moving the story forward to the everyday struggle of trying to survive in a post apocalypse world. I can’t wait to see what happens next in Damon’s, Greyson’s second in command, story ‘Winter Igniting’.
Maureen is a Biotechnology Engineer and was kidnapped from her lab by a Merc, then the President kidnapped from him, and then she was rescued and taken back to Vanguard.
Greyson was in the Navy before the Scorpious hit. He is the leader of the Mercs and needs Maureen to find out if their hothouses can grow food. The heat turns up between them but will she have to choose between her brother and the Vanguards or Greyson and his Mercs?
They have the President and his men trying to destroy everything they love.
Excellent story line. Action packed. Will leave you on the edge of your seat. Very hot sex scenes. I love all her books and can’t wait for next one.
* Received from Netgalley and voluntarily reviewed it *
Loved this book. This is this next book in this series and picks up back at Vanguard.
Maureen is at Vanguard and is having a bit of a female issue which requires her to see the doctor. The fact that Marcus won’t leave the doctor alone is scary and intimidating. But she has bigger problems and since Dr. Penelope can handle him she follows the doctor’s orders.
Greyson Storm, leader of the mercs and fond of Maureen is back with Damon. He had once kidnapped her and now he needs her back.
When he asks her if she wants to return with him she says yes, to which Raze and Jax both say a profound and strong no to. So a fight ensues.
As time continues on the two groups have several things in common, the big one being survival, the second and also as big being Maureen.
So many problems, so little facilities and medications. Will they fight one another, ally with each other or join forces with the sociopath of a president?
There are many things driving Grey but two things equal, keeping Maureen safe and keeping a promise.
This is a fantastic book and it continues to morph and surprise me in a series as a whole. I am such a fan!
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
