“I live for the dream that my children will be born free,” she says. “That they will be what they like. That they will own the land their father gave them.”
“I live for you,” I say sadly.
Eo kisses my cheek. “Then you must live for more.”
Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he toils willingly, trusting that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.
But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and lush wilds spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.
Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies . . . even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

Slow start because of the background info but then amazing read. Already reading the second book.
Loved this whole series.
Amazingly complex and well-constructed, this first novel of three is stunning. And addictive – I’m 50% through the third entry and it’s still superb.
I can’t get over this series. I’m ready to be initiated as a Howler.
A little slow at times, but picks up later on. A different take on the sci-fi dystopia, with some new ideas, and interesting characters. First in a series, but could almost stand alone.
This book one of the trilogy will keep you wanting to keep reading. Anxiously awaiting his next series. Great writer!
This book was a sleeper for me. I kept putting off reading it till it was the only thing on the shelf I hadn’t read, yet. When I did, I realized I’d put off reading one of the best books! Characterization is fantastic with lots of interesting stuff for us adrenaline junkies. There is plenty of historical relevance to educate us in where folks …
Illuminating and timely. Real life descriptions of the Russians and the oligarchs who run the country. Must read for anyone who cares about foreign relations today.
I came with high expectations to this book as it has been widely hyped as being the “new” Hunger Games but better. It absolutely lives up to the hype. The book succeeds in building a credible dystopian future in which man has had to emigrate to Mars to escape from the cataclysm of Earth and in the process building a different society modeled on …
It’s Hunger Games on Mars, right down to the first-person present tense. Liked that book? You’ll probably like this one, too!
The saving grace of this story is the school warfare, where you get to see the kids match wits and generally be a-holes to one another, much like the feats of Ender or Katniss, and that’s really fortunate, because it’s a …
