‘I could not put this book down. It should definitely be part of the American School curriculum. I learned so much and it filled me with a new passion for historical fiction. The book enables us to put ourselves into the skin of a young African boy and see, smell, hear and feel all his incredible adventures and horrors as clearly as if we were there.’ Michelle M, Amazon reviewer.

The character development was consistent and held throughout the story. The treatment of the slaves and details gave me information that I didn’t know. A good read!
A good interpretation of the story line.
This book was a page turner! I loved the realistic historical aspects. It was gut-wrenching reading about the slaver ships. A really good book though!!
Sorry was not for me. Could never get into this book and did not finish
Gave me insight to the life of Francis Drake that I never knew
A good historical novel about the slave trade as seen from point of view of two boys, one traded into slavery, and one an English boy on a ship capturing the slaves and put in charge of the other boy. Later on, the slave becomes the one with more sway over the English boy. Had some real historical characters in the mix like Francis Drake.
I will never “do not recomment” because readers are individuals and what I may find interesting another reader may thoroughly enjoy. That being said this book was not MY cup of tea.
A different read for me but enjoyed
This is an incredible book, which though Fiction, has been painstakingly researched. It is based on real people and real events, for the most part. A swashbuckling sea adventure of the 1500s. A New World adventure. A tale of war and survival, and friendship. It is very exciting with a lot of action, and yet brings up deep and meaningful …
This was a wonderfully written historical novel with complex characters derived from real historical figures. The author did a great job of exploring the interplay between the various sets of people/characters involved in or affected by the horrific trans Atlantic trade in enslaved people.
Though there’s no doubt of the evils of slavery, the …
I couldn’t get into it.
by 3rd chapter I was done reading this book
Rather predictable, and scripted to modern thinking rather than aiming for period veracity, which might have given more depth. Still, thought provoking and well worth reading.
I never felt I knew these characters. It is a tragic story but I never felt any real passion reading it. It just seemed to plug along from one event to the other.
This novel had many accurate historical facts. I felt as though the author kept this novel close to accurate while the writing wad engaging.
Clean book. Good story. Bad ending.
A good read, gives new meaning and perspective to different points of view.
This could very well been a true story between a young African boy who had been caught and taken away from his family by another African tribe to be sold to an English man trading in slaves. Then the tables were turned Tom a young English boy who worked on the ship was stolen and sent to be a slave of the Spaniards, but Manadu helped him to be a …
