As one of the top paid defensemen in the NHL, my life has been a revolving door of beautiful women and no-strings-attached sex.Until Brynne. It was only supposed to be a one-night-fling. Hell, it wasn’t even supposed to be that. I knew the cardinal rule. Don’t touch the coach’s daughter. And for years, I kept my hands to myself. It wasn’t difficult considering Brynne Jacobs hates my guts. She can’t … hates my guts.
She can’t stand being in the same room as me – except for that one night. A night that left me hell bent on having more. Having all of her.
But she took off. No text. No explanation. Not even a goodbye.
Now she’s back, but she’s not alone. She’s got a kid. A kid with all-too-familiar blue eyes and dimples.
Math might not be my strong suit, but a quick calculation and I know the baby is mine.
And she’s delusional if she thinks I’m going to let her keep him from me.
Damaged. Callous. Cold. Those are the words she uses to describe me. And I’ve never claimed to be anything more. But for her – for them – I want to be.
I’ve been a fighter on the ice my entire life. Now, I’m fighting for the one thing I’ve spent my life running from – family.

I don’t believe C.M. Seabrook can write anything less than a 5 star book. Brynne and Kane have known each other for years. Brynne’s father is the Coach of the hockey team that Kane plays on.
They have a love/hate relationship. Brynne blames Kane for things that’s really not his fault. This couple has its up and downs.
It had my emotions all over the place. I highly recommend this book. Anything this author writes I would recommend.
Loved this book–had to go onto read the next one. Great series!!
A steamy second chance romance! There are some triggers through this story. Both Kane and Brynne are still struggling after her brother’s suicide. One passionate encounter later and then Brynne disappears, only to return a year later with a little surprise.
I felt Brynne progressed through the story and her compassion shone through. Kane didn’t progress as much, and he made me angry at the treatment he gave to his half-sister. Maybe we could have seen him process that relationship a bit more….
Second chance romance with all the ups and downs you would expect from two people who can’t seem to find the right ways to communicate their true feelings, mixed with some secrets that will hurt. Kane and Brynne are explosive together not only in the sheets but with their attitudes towards one another. Could not put this book down, I was drawn to it from the first page and it kept me riveted till the end.
Second Shot is the second book in the Men with Wood series and focuses on Brynne and Kane and is a second chance romance of sorts. Brynne and Kane have a complicated history in that Kane plays hockey for Brynne’s father and Brynne and her father don’t have a good relationship. Brynne and Kane lose touch for a while but Kane has never forgotten her and when she returns and has a child, his feelings for her are only doubled.
I absolutely loved both Kane and Brynne as characters. I loved how Kane was protective of everyone he cared about and how he seemed to really just want to do the right thing. I loved that Brynne was strong and independent. I think they worked really well as a couple and I enjoyed the author’s writing style. I really, really enjoyed the ending and look forward to reading book three in the series.
Brynne has always secretly loved Kane. The big hockey player, who was best friends with her brother. She had love/hate feelings for him. She was blinded by what she saw , not what was the truth. Not everything is at it seems. After that Brynne always came to the wrong conclusions about Kane.
So many ups and downs. Kane trying to do the right thing, yes he’s a rugged hockey player, has a temper. He gets frustrated whenever Brynne puts up that wall. Just when he’s chipping away that wall, something happens that closes it back up! But when they’re connected they’re electric, hot, steamy.
This story touches on the drug abuse, mental illness and how it can effect everyone around them. Angst, anger torment, death, confusion, love, and forgiveness are issues between Kane and Brynne
Evelyn Marcail voices and personalities for each character were spot on! Her ability to transition from one character to the other is flawless.

While this is the second book in the series, you don’t have to listen to the first book (Second Draft) to enjoy this one. There’s only a brief cameo from one of the characters in the first book. This book was more complex (and better) than I expected. It is a sports romance, but it doesn’t shy away from tough topics like addiction. There is a lot of set up for the third book in the series, which I’m interested in listening to.
I listened to the Audible version. Evelyn Marcail was a new narrator for me. I prefer that dual first person POV books have dual narrators, but she did really well with the narration.

Second Shot was the second book in the Men with Wood series by CM Seabrook. It was a true stand-alone from the first book in the series.
Brynne Jacobs and Kane Madden have history. Brynne’s father was Kane’s NHL Hockey coach. Great coach, not so great father. At the start of the story, a tragedy was revealed which became the center of the plot between Kane and Brynne.
Second shot was told from a double POV including both past and present. Overall, it was well written, well developed and a complex plot. For me, it was a tough subject and the parts of the story I didn’t like had nothing to do with the writing, but what I personally craved for the direction of the story. Frankly, I didn’t like Brynne. If you feel the same, stay with it to see it through. It was actually a realistic perspective. In the end, I was hooked, read it straight through and loved how Seabrook took us to the end.
I’m leaving the details vague so you can experience the events as they happen without spoilers. The description of the book was only the foundation. The story itself was bigger, more complex and multi-faceted. A worthy read.
Lastly, the author was simultaneously developing the next story in the series, Second Goal, focusing on Blake and Kylie. I can’t wait to get started.
I had to take a few minutes to bask in the glory of finishing a really good book. C.M. Seabrook knows how to write ’em. “Stubborn” was the word of the day with this book. Beyond was that beyond belief. Kane was that and more to be able to break down her walls. Every single moment of this book was so full of stubbornness and I loved every bit of it.
I highly recommend this book!
Happy reading!
Rating 5 stars
Second Shot is a sports romance, a second chance romance, a bit of an enemies to lovers story with a secret pregnancy. This all worked together to make a storyline that had me engaged from the first page to the last.
“The little brat thinks she’s won.
It’s almost comical. Because the thing is, I haven’t even started playing.
Game on, sweetheart.”
I listened to most of this story on audiobook and enjoyed the narration.
-4 Stars!-
3 stars. While I liked the first book more than this one ~ it’s still a decent read. You don’t have to read Second Draft to read Second Shot. Only one MC from book 1 makes an appearance and if you hadn’t read the first one you wouldn’t even know you were supposed to know who he was.
Kane is a hockey player and has a one-night stand with the coach’s daughter, Brynne. This results in a pregnancy/baby that she keeps a secret for a year. This info dump happens in the first few pages, so it’s not really a spoiler (plus, it’s basically the description of the book).
And “info dump” is the biggest issue I have with this book. We’re *told* a lot of things without much story to back them up. Kane & Brynne have loved the other for years and we’re told this a few times, but none of the story really reflects this. There’s also some “big secrets” and there’s a few flashback chapters ~ but there isn’t a solid resolution to some of the issues. Brynne repeatedly accuses Kane of being an addict but when faced with her misplaced assumptions, she doesn’t ever really seem to accept that she was wrong and he was *never* a user.
If the author would have expanded on some of these things, I think I would have enjoyed it more. Overall, Kane, and to a lesser extent, Brynne grow and become likable characters and their HEA is decent.
Weirdly my biggest complaint is that there is *huge* implication that there will be a “Kiley & Blake” story in this series… alas, this book is two years old and it doesn’t look like we’ll get that.
Hot bodies to read about. Can’t miss this one.
Another great read by Ms. Seabrook. Kane is such a great character – steadfast in his loyalty to his friends and his love for Brynne.
Well edited.
Kane has been involved with Brynne’s family for years. After all, he plays for the hockey team her father coaches and was best friends with her brother. And, in all that time, he has harbored strong feelings for in his heart for Brynne. Brynne has been harboring her own feelings, and neither one has been willing to share. Unfortunately, family struggles and tragedy have caused Brynne to bury her feelings under anger, grief, and bitterness.
Sam, Brynne’s brother and Kane’s best friend, committed suicide. The tragedy has had far reaching consequences, including Brynne blaming both Kane and her father for Sam’s decision. On the one year anniversary of Sam’s death, Brynne goes to confront Kane in her grief, and they end up consumed in passion, grief, and pain. A year later, while visiting Sam’s grave, Kane runs into Brynne. While there, he finds that Brynne has kept quite the secret in the past year – she has had Kane’s son. Kane is determined to be in his son’s life, and to finally have Brynne in his life too. Will he be able to get her to see truth and love before it is too late?
Brynne was very frustrating at times – willing to believe the worst of Kane at every turn and blinded by grief and rage. While I could understand the turmoil of her feelings, it doesn’t change that I wanted her to wake up.
I have really enjoyed every book I have read by Ms. Seabrook. Hoping to see Blake and Kiley’s story. Enjoy!
Kane and Brynne’s second chance romance will pull at your heartstrings and steam up your ereaders! Brynne has been in a love/hate rerelationship with Kane since the moment she laid eyes on the cocky athlete. She grew up in that world, she knows what perks and lifestyles those guys are given and hates everything about their elitists macho ways. Kane embodies that life to a tee and when he drags her brother, Sam, down to his utter ruin it’s to much to forgive. But chemistry, lust, and grief override commonsense and one night leads to circumstances that change everything. Kane has always loved Brynne. No ifs ands or buts. He pushed her away and made himself the bad guy to protect Sam, but now that he’s gone… When Brynne resurfaces after their drunken night of grief a year later, Kane didn’t expect her to just fall right into open arms, but a baby wasn’t even on the list of possibilities! The woman he loves had his child and didn’t tell him… their is no way is he letting them get away now. She has always thought the worst of him, but its time to know the truth. Winning her is the only option and its time to Face Off!
I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this book.
Another Hit for me. I loved this story it was really well written and flowed so well it was over before I was ready for it to be. Brynne was a perfect fit for Kane. She was a little feisty and very headstrong, but was also vulnerable. Kane my goodness that man stepped right up and stole my ovaries, he knew what he wanted and went for it. So good. I am so excited to see where this series goes next, we got a little peak into Blake hope he is next. I happily received an ARC to share my thoughts.
***4.50-4.75 Stars***
What a great book. Kane is one of the top paid defensemen in the NHL who has lived a life with a revolving door of women at his disposal for hook-ups only.
Brynne is the daughter of Kane’s coach and since they met eight years ago they have been attracted to the other. There have been more than the average amount of misunderstandings with mostly Brynne the one blinded to the truth and taking her assumptions (which are untrue) and making them facts…without real proof.
This was an awesome love story. Once he and Brynne are together he is a changed man. He knows what he wants and no one else will do.
Safety Gang-this is a safe read. Hero a man-whore before the beginning of the book but once he is with the heroine he is with no one else…hurrah!
I highly recommend this book and it definitely goes on my reread list.
5 Hockey Playing Stars!
Second Shot is an amazing second chance romance. I’m such a sucker for secret babies, so I was hooked right from the blurb. C. M. Seabrook didn’t disappoint one bit.
I loved both Kane and Brynne! They both balanced eachother out and had great chemistry throughout the story. Really enjoyed their banter and how Kane dealt with Brynne’s stubbornness going all alpha. Of course my favorite part that had me swooning was everytime Kane was with baby Noah and how protective he was. Not only did I love the love story between them, but the story behind their pasts. It’s always important to shed light and awareness to difficult topics like drug addiction and mental illness.
C M Seabrook did a great job writing Second Shot. It’s an easy flowing standalone with its own HEA. Evelyn Marcail also did an amazing job narrating Second Shot in the dual POV. Definitely a must 1-click for me. Really hoping Blake and Kiley get the own book. In dying to find out what’s going on with those two!
Second Shot is a lovely emotion filled story about family, forgiveness and second chances. Brynne is a strong, stubborn and determined woman. Angry and hurting from the loss of the one person she loved most in the world Brynne ends up in Kane’s arms. That one night changes their lives forever. Struggling with her mixed emotions Brynne disappears determined to make a life of her own.
Chance has her running into Kane when she least expects it.
Finding out that he’s a father has Kane determined to prove to Brynne that he’s a man worthy of her love & trust and that he will be an amazing father.
I think Second Shot is my new favorite of CM Seabrook’s. It is a great addition to her written work. I can’t wait to read her next book.
Great Second Chance Romance 4.5 stars
There are a plethora of great books in the Indie World and I think this is definitely another one of them!
Carter Bennett, Bad Boy Hockey player since he turned 17, has played at the top levels for eleven years, but for him, the last four years have been the worst. His parents died, and while he had his hockey to carry on with, his 17 year old brother didn’t. Then through devastating injury, Hockey is also taken away.
Travis Bennett, Carter’s younger brother, blames life circumstances for his sh!tty existence, made even worse by bad choices, blaming everyone else for what is wrong in his life. Most of all, he blames Carter, and expects Carter to clean up his messes to keep him out of trouble. And this latest mess involves his house-mate, the girl that Carter never really had a chance to know, and, never forgot about.
A year ago, he had saved a stunning young woman’s life by pulling her out of the way of the traffic she didn’t see because she was reading as she walked. The next night, he saves her from a drunken pickup attempt as she reads at the bar while waiting for a friend. They talk. She’s written a book, he wants to help and gives her his number as she is being dragged off by the friend. It is only as they are gone, he realises it was his old number, as it had just been changed in preparation for his new job in New York, as a sports journalist for a second rate-magazine. He needed it though, not financially, but as a way to stay in with the sport he loved. He can’t believe that mistake cost his chance with her.
Now coming home to clean up Travis’ latest mess he realises that it involves the stunning young woman, and is gutted: “She was supposed to be mine. The thought comes unbidden, from a primal part of my brain…I’m used to life throwing curve balls, but this one I didn’t see coming.”
Layla, bought up by over-protective and extremely religious parents, has her own past demons, that ensured she withstood a chance against Travis’ constant barrage of sexual approaches. One night of alcohol results in consequences that send Travis running. Carter sees this as his opportunity to step up and claim the woman he never had a chance to know the first time. Carter may not be the perfect book boyfriend, but this gorgeous man has morals and wants to have his chance with Layla: “I have a deal of my own. One that will finally make her mine.”
Trouble is, she’s not easy, and Travis has his own issues with his older brother.
I love second chance romances, and CM Seabrook has written one that for me has been a re-read. I recommend it to all who love this genre, especially when it involves a hot ex-hockey player. 4.5 Stars.
