This is an excellent prequel to the series and added some great information. We have 3 different groups of people vying for attention in the story. I felt like there were a few loose ends that I am sure we will see more about in a later story. And that ending well … the ending ended with a big BOOM! I am not sure which cover is the current one but I LOVE the cover where she is in black standing in front of the fire!
I was gifted an ARC in return of an honest review.
Adara and Duncan’s personalities were too similar. I had trouble keeping them apart. In regards to Duncan, he is too plain. He is just a generic villain with delusions of grandeur. Honstely, his victories are not believeable. I don’t mind the villain getting the upper hand every now and then, but only if it’s reasonable. Like if the clan took Lucy’s concerns seriously and helped her fight, it would have made more sense. As the series is right now, Duncan is winning too much. In regards to story, it felt like the plot of the first prequel. The only difference was Lucy and Grace’s story.
Grace’s plotline took away from the impact of Duncan’s plan. Why is Paula so hung up on a guy that she barely talks too? Yes, Grace should have told the truth, but Paula’s reaction seems over the top. Paula gushes over Mason. While it’s still wrong, Grace’s silence made sense. She was conflicted and didn’t want to hurt her friend. Her actions while morally wrong are not really on that big a scale in regards to society. In fact, Grace’s feelings are just human nature especially for a teenager. So, for her actions to qualify her being tainted enough to be turned seems petty and ridiculous.
Lucy was the most well rounded character in the story. Unlike the villians, her actions were more understandable since the reader was given more details into her background. She had a past that scared her, but harden her determination for survival. This made her death all the more anticlimactic and disappointing.
Also, how does the clan not understand that vampires are more than mindless animals? The books suggests that Cells have been around for quite awhile. How is it they have never captured a vampire for intel or be subjected to typical villainous banter like Adara and Lucy were? If they were just ravenous beasts, they wouldn’t live so long. It seems really illogical to me.

Great job Flak, thanks for sharing this fantastic read with us.
A dual storyline until plot brings them together. College angst Of boyfriends and friends alongside a college age hunter who loses 2 fellow hunters and quits. They collide when a vampire comes onto campus, not for education, and to close to her classmates. Reluctantly out comes the stake. Engaging, leaves me wanting more.
