Death on West End Road is the third book in the Hamptons Murder Mysteries written by Carrie Doyle. Given I grew up on Long Island and the author lives in NYC, and it’s a mostly cozy mystery, I had to give the series a chance. I am now 3/4 of the way through it and plan to read the last book (not sure if there will be more) in 2021.
Antonio had a bad break-up in California. She bought an inn on the eastern end of Long Island, where all the rich and famous have second homes. Given her extraordinary cooking skills, she quickly made friends… and some want her to solve a murder. In this book, there’s a 20+ year mystery brewing… did Pauline Framingham kill her best friend, Susie? The cops couldn’t arrest her, but she looked quite guilty. Too bad there were 6 or 7 other people around that day with hidden motives. Which one really did it (clubbed her with a tennis racquet)? Pauline hires Antonia, who is also busy crushing on a local actor and connecting guests at her inn who know each other but can’t find each other.
I enjoy mysteries that delve into the past. The background setting is beautiful and familiar. The writing is good. This has all the classic characters and motives, so it’s a joy to read. It’s also not light and fluffy; there is substance and charm. Of course, we have all the side stories to make the place feel real, and the supporting cast provides interesting background moments. My only feedback would be to develop them more… it sometimes feels like Antonia is too on her own, even though she has help. Another fun edition in this series, and I recommend them to mid-range mystery lovers who like some like and some complex components.
Loved this series – the characters and the writing. Will look forward to other books by this author.
Enjoyed the plot as it never went anywhere expected
I really liked this book as an upstate networker and never having been to this
Part of New York . I really found it interesting . I may have to take a fall trip . A great summer read
“Death on West End Road” earns 5/5 Old Money Mysteries!
I am new to Carrie Doyle’s Hamptons Murder Mystery series, not sure where I’ve been, but this third book in the series turned out to be the perfect place to start: Privileged families? Wealthy playground? Very cold, cold case of murder? Who knew that behind those shaded windows of the ‘rich and famous’ there could be something dark and deadly? I didn’t feel that I was left out of the back story and character connections having not read the previous two books, although eager to do so, enough information was provided to get ‘this newbie’ up to speed, and I greatly appreciated that no spoilers were revealed to ruin going back to the first two books. This story is very exciting, and I found Doyle’s characters well developed. My favorite, Antonia of course, is admirable as she enjoys running her Inn and restaurant, slowly entertaining the possibility of a new romance, and helping others who need closure from a tragic event. She is definitely as others have described her…Miss Marple! Her personal demons pop up again and some family revelations add more engaging drama. The setting of East Hampton and the ‘ins and outs’ of running an Inn and restaurant play out in the background making it a place to add to one’s bucket list… Personally? Joseph Fowler is my grandfather’s name. It was so much fun to see it pop up frequently. This is a great book, highly recommended, and a series I am eager to visit often.
You will be taken to a charming village in New York when you read this enjoyable who-dun-it cozy mystery. The book, “Death on West End Road” describes the perfect getaway, in a picture-postcard inn. (if only I could make a reservation. *sigh*) But a cold-case murder mystery grabs your attention. Who could be a murderer in this quaint village?
Antonia Bingham is the proud innkeeper of “The Windmill Inn,” built in 1840. But, she has a guilty pleasure: solving mysteries! When she is approached to help solve a cold case murder, she agrees without hesitation to do some sleuthing. This cold case murder has been haunting the town of Hampton for a very long time.
Author, Carrie Doyle has written an entertaining who-dun-it. I was introduced to the author through a fun cozy mystery launch party. This is book three of “A Hampton Murder Mystery” series but can be read as a stand-alone. If you enjoy a fun mystery with plenty of charm, don’t wait to get your hands on this book.
~This book was given to me through a giveaway by the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.~
I thought it was a very amateurish attempt. It was bordering on a romance novel and not to my taste at all
