I like it when things get personal. And they don’t more personal than a sinister, unknown enemy, intent on destroying everything you’ve worked so hard to achieve. But this subplot is only the icing on the rich, beautifully crafted cake that is the third outing for DS Kay Hunter.
Faced with the murder of teenager, Sophie Whittaker, at a party to celebrate her ‘purity pledge’, there are plenty of suspects and few clues. Most of the witnesses have already drunk too much, and as the investigation progresses, it’s clear that almost everyone Sophie came into contact with had a motive to kill her.
And then more secrets are uncovered.
I’m enjoying this series more with each book as the personal stakes increase, threatening to destroy Kay’s career and well-being for reasons she’s yet to establish. And each case she investigates is highly original, driven by twisting plots that keep you hooked and guessing to the final pages.
I love Kay’s single-minded determination to bring the killer to justice, no matter what it takes. No wonder her loyal team rally round when things get tough, even if the people at the top don’t. It all adds up to a series with great depth, vivid characters, heaps of conflict and personal challenges, topped off with some terrific storylines that should satisfy anyone who loves a good crime story.
Some secrets should never be shared. Sophie Whittaker shared her secret with a friend …and a short time later she was brutally murdered.
Detective Kay Hunter and her team will have to dig deep while tiptoeing through the lives of the elite. Sophie had been attending a purity party … where she was to pledge to remain chaste until she was married. At the same time, her parents were going to announce her engagement to a young man in order to bring two families together in a business proposition.
There are several suspects and they all seem to be hiding something and lying about others. For the 16-year-old victim, she has racked up a lot of people who might have wanted .. or needed … her dead.
This is third in an engaging series. I highly recommend starting at the very beginning, not only because the characters are finely drawn, but there is an ongoing back story with someone targeting Hunter. Someone is waging a vendetta against her and she doesn’t know who to trust … not her bosses, not her colleagues, not the man she loves.
There are riveting twists and turns that make this one a real page-turner.
Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
I love the fabulous cast of characters Rachel Amphlett has created for her Kay Hunter series of books. If you like strong female lead characters, very plausible stories that are based on reality and do not rely on cheap tricks at the end, then this book is for you. Read all of Rachel Amphlett’s books, you will not be disappointed.
Children should never be faced with death. It is immoral, it is devastating and it is tragic. But, who do you place the blame on? If it is cancer, the blame is placed on doctors or perhaps the man upstairs, but there is rarely ever vengeful thoughts or a demand for justice. When it is murder—that blame is placed irrevocably on the person responsible for abruptly ending that life. Murder makes everyone look guilty and suddenly motive is everywhere, but could it have been random? A complete stranger or was it someone close? Amphlett has an intriguing third installment in her Detective Kay Hunter Mystery series which will leave readers entertained and guessing for most of the story.
Detective Kay Hunter is always the one with the whodunit cases. A teenage girl is found dead at a party that is meant to celebrate her purity pledge and engagement to the boy of a wealthy and well-known family. Secrets run amuck in this mysterious tragedy, but Detective Kay Hunter doesn’t have the clearance to get to the bottom of things quickly. Instead, since the families involved are high-end, they have to tip toe around all of the evidence that they find. It is easy to guess that everyone had motive to kill Sophie Whitaker, but who actually did it? Once the murder suspects are all out on the table, no one can hide behind wealth or fame. Can Detective Kay Hunter crack this case open or will this case be the one that ends her career? If she doesn’t watch her back, her superior may find reason to ruin her once and for all.
Amphlett has a great third installment with her Detective Kay Hunter Mystery series, One to Watch. The character development is purposefully slow as to not give away the whole story-line right away, but the pace and flow are steady. Since this review is complementing the audiobook, the narrator portrayed the characters beautifully and with the author’s vivid description, they both gave life to the story together. The narrator may need to work on her accent building when shifting between British English to American English, as some of the dialogue was quite stiff and pronounced incorrectly, but sometimes that can be a very tough mission to accomplish. If you are a reader of murder mystery and crime fiction, you may enjoy this book. With this being the third installment in the Detective Kay Hunter series, readers can still read or listen to this book as a standalone, but their are hints and nods back to the first and second installments.
