She’s shy, he’s stoic…not the hardest personality traits to overcome, but Sophie Carson and Roman “Chief” Proudfit have their work cut out for them.Sophie has a crush on the silent-but-studly firefighter next door. She’s been pining away silently while secretly helping the hardworking man by mowing his lawn—which he thinks is being done by her nonexistent husband and/or boyfriend. He’s definitely … definitely not big on neighborly chitchat, but with her stutter, that suits Sophie just fine. But now a misunderstanding at a bar has put him even further out of her reach.
Roman’s difficult upbringing on an Indian reservation is a sore spot, so when he thinks Sophie is taking advantage of poor people for medical trials at her workplace, he lets her know exactly what he thinks. But when he discovers he misunderstood, he’s man enough to admit it…and also that he should have opened his eyes to his beautiful, sensitive neighbor sooner.
As the couple gets closer, each helping the other overcome lifelong pains, for the first time in years, Roman has something to live for other than his job. And, as he discovers when Sophie puts herself in danger, something even bigger to lose…
** Shelter for Sophie is the 8th book in the Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes Series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliffhanger endings.

Susan Stoker is in my top five favorite authors. The Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes is one of my favorite series because this series is the one that got me hooked. This series gets better with each new story. I enjoyed learning about The Navajo way and customs. Her characters face real life situations and it makes it more relatable to us readers.
I can’t tell you how much I truly love this book. I mean, really, it was that good. Sophie is such a sweetheart that you can’t help but like her, stutter and all. As I got further into the book I didn’t even notice that I was reading her stutter, it became like she didn’t even have it- like it was just a little quirk. Chief was sexy as hell, once he got past his initial uneducated judgement about Sophie. It goes to show that we can’t judge someone or something until we know everything. What can I say? I loved the whole book. (And beware the skinwalkers!)
You can never go wrong with a story by Ms Stoker and this one proves that fact.
The ability of the author to point out people’s judgement of those they do not consider “normal” whether it be because of a disability, in this case speech, or race, in this case American Indian, was outstanding.
The main characters, Roman/Chief and Sophie were complex and the plot was well developed.
A reminder that perceptions can be deceiving. The saying , never judge a book by it’s cover, couldn’t be more true.
It’s a heartbreaking, but also heartwarming story about two individuals who will grow and blossom because of trust, and love.
Looking forward to more stories by Ms Stoker.
I was gifted this copy. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Very much enjoyed this, can’t wait for the next book or any by this author coming out soon.Love how the author creates strong characters.
This is a voluntary arc review, my thoughts are my own.
Great read! Loved both Sophie and Chief. They are great people individually and together they are awesome.
One of my favorites in this series.
This story starts off with a bang! Everyone is at a bar (at their own tables). 1 of them overhears the other one (kind of like eavesdropping) and you can just imagine the fun Susan Stoker had with us there. It just gets better and better from there. The entire book had a great flow to it, and the audible is outstanding! The narrator did an awesome job with Sofies stutter and just did an outstanding job! Since it was out on audio first, I ran to get it there first. Now I am reading the book.
There are so many clues, crumbles, Easter Eggs, whatever you like to call them, throughout this book for other things to come.
You WILL NOT regret reading this one…for sure!!!
I can’t tell you how much I love this series, and this book is no exception.
Sophie is into her neighbor Chief. When they first interact, Chief makes an assumption about her and set a pattern for this couple. Sophie was born with a stutter and because of this she is careful of what she says.
I loved Sophie throughout this whole book. I loved that she didn’t let the stutter get in the way of telling off Chief when he made his assumptions, I love that she is passionate about her work and helping people who have been hurt. I enjoyed reading about her time spent with her homeless friends and the care and concern she had about them.
Chief was a man I liked but yet there were times I wanted to hit him upside the head. Chief has some long buried scars that make him jump to the conclusion that he does. The one thing I admire about him is when he find out he is wrong, he is man enough to admit it.
Watching these two grow as a couple and as individuals was fun to read. I look forward to reading Mrs. Stokers next book.
Susan Stoker delivers another great read in her Badge of Honor series. Shelter for Sophie combines romance, suspense with a touch of mysticism drawing the reader into the story from the start. As with her other books, the main characters are flaw but very much humans with their hearts in the right place. This is part of a series and can be read as a stand alone, reading the series in order, however, gives the reader a more satisfactory experience.
Great read!
Loved the story of Sophie and Chief! Favorite scene was where he held her white/blond hair and his black hair together, and twined them. I can just picture that!
I love her series! I can’t wait for each one to come out.
The long awaited story of Chief and Sophie did not disappoint. Sometimes you build an anticipated story up in you mind then become disillusioned once you’ve read it. I can honestly say it caught hold of me from the beginning and never let go.
I really enjoyed the slow build in their relationship and the background Chief gave on his childhood.
Great H/h dynamic, no drawn out angst, good flow and interesting secondary characters. I see another story brewing with Sophie’s friend Quinn in the mix.
This is the second book I have read from this series and it was fantastic. I will definitely be going back and reading the others to get all the backstories on how they all met since the characters overlap to the other books in the series. Both main characters are strong and compassionate people who look out for others and are willing to go the extra mile to help those less fortunate regardless of their background or lifestyles. They have open, honest natures but each have a darkness in their past that they are doing their best to overcome. Neither expected that a small misunderstanding would lead them down a road to love.
Sophie Carson has had a crush on her neighbor since he moved in next door but the handsome, hardworking firefighter seems unapproachable and she is worried about how he will react to her stutter. She has had bad experiences in the past and present with others making fun of her and not seeing past her disability so she is afraid to take the chance. She works next to the hospital at a surgical research burn center where she and others are trying to find a way to better treat burn patients. Experiencing the barbaric procedures burn patients have to endure herself, this research is close to her heart and she works with disadvantaged patients to help them get the treatment they would otherwise be denied. She has a big heart and goes out of her way to help those in need, even befriending several homeless people living in an abandoned building next to the hospital. A night out with her few friends, who each have their own personal difficulties, results in a misunderstanding and angry confrontation with her neighbor and she fears it puts him even farther out of her reach.
Roman “Chief” Proudfit has never looked twice at his neighbor. Apart from giving her $20 to give to her non-existent boyfriend for mowing his yard, he keeps to himself aside from his work as a firefighter and spending time with his friends from the station. On a night out with some friends from the station, he overhears part of a conversation from the next booth; containing his neighbor and her friends. First he is surprised to hear that she has a crush on him but his surprise quickly turns to anger when his misunderstands her conversation regarding her job, thinking she is trying to take advantage of the poor. Being Native American and growing up poor on the reservation this hits a sore spot with him and he decides to confront her, only to be challenged to find out more about what she does from Sophie herself and the bartender who overhears their conversation. Suddenly warry about the possibility of accusing her unjustly he is consumed with the need to know more about her and the more he learns the more intrigued he is. However since her first impression of him is now tainted by his overreaction, will she give him a chance to make it right? Will he be able to get to know the woman that seems to be consuming his thoughts?
As they grow closer, helping to ease the painful memories of their pasts their future happiness is put on the line when an evil comes for him and Sophie puts herself in harm’s way. Knowing he has something more than his work to live for, will he make it in time to save her? Or will they be finished before they truly have a chance to begin?
I loved this book. This is the story of Roman “Chief” and Sophie. Sophie lives next door to Chief and has had a crush on him since he moved in. Sophie is very down to earth and very likeable while Chief is very alpha, while also staying true to his Navajo heritage. I also enjoyed Sophie’s friends and their unique personalities. The entire story is very well written and was entertaining throughout the whole book. You can’t go wrong on this story.
