Love. Trust. Loyalty. Meaningless words to Sydney Harris who has been dealt blow after blow. Literally. Her once ideal life is changed forever by tragedy and one terrifying monster. Breaking free, she rebuilds her life, and meets a man. A man whose mere presence makes her blood run hot and wakes a part of her she thought died long ago. Cameron is the perfect of overprotective alpha male, and Sydney is the unlikely female counterpart that isn’t going to deter from her plan. Each one is keeping secrets from one another. But they are after the same result with putting away a scum bucket where he can’t dirty their lives.
This story ramps up the suspense aspect in Ms. Hanks storytelling. The reader gets insight into the characters associated with Elite Securities for future stories. Although there is some angst in the developing relationship, the suspense keeps the story moving for this reader. We fall deeper in love with these bossy men including their patriarchs.
After reading Lucy and being left with the kind of ending that we were, I just had to continue on to find out what was going on with Cam that would make him hide from his family for 2 years.
In Lucy (the Dimarco book 1) we learned that Cameron and Christian are the twin brothers and were always together, until the military separated them due to their specialties. The family hadn’t heard from Cam in 2 years and being a military type family, they all were worried about the worst possible scenario.
What they didn’t know was Cameron was really on a 5 minute drive from them working undercover. Cam had his reasons for working undercover and not involving his family. But things with his case are at a standstill and they need the help of Sydney Harris, the ex-girlfriend of their target to help. But lines are soon blurred and feelings arouse between Sydney and Cam that have him reconsidering using her.
Sydney has been used, degraded, and abused enough in her life by her ex. What she thought was a turning point in her life and relationship, she soon learns was just another man using her. But now that she is in on the investigation, she’ll do whatever she has to and use whoever she has to, including Cam, to save her brother and get him out from under her ex’s thumb.
For both Cam and Sydney, they both will have to learn to love, trust, and let go of the past to move forward to a future with each other.
What I will say about this one that was disappointing, was there were a few things that were left out in the open that the author really could’ve touched on. For instance how was it Cam was able to transition from military to FBI and why was it that only Luke could know he was alive while the rest of the family thought he was dead? I mean lets be honest, there can be and always will be tensions between local authorities and FBI agents, so it’s not like the two were working together on the case.
I love the DiMarco boys. They just seem to keep getting better and better (but it’s hard to choose a favorite)
Cameron and Sydney do not have an easy start but you can definitely tell they have the same spark that Jax and Kasey and Cameron and Lucy had. Definitely like the mystery element that ran along with this steamy romance. Next up is Gianna and Brody!
Once you start reading this series you won’t be able to stop. I’m in love with this family! I love the romance intertwined with a little mystery and suspense. All the characters are so easy to relate to. This is one of those books when you sit down to read it you find yourself saying “just one more chapter” and before you know it it’s way past bedtime and you’ve finished the book! Off to start Gianna now.
Again with the mixed feelings. While I did like Sydney more than I did Lucy, I did have conflicting thoughts.
