200 years after the world ends, their future begins. In 2157, a mysterious gas known as Variant spreads across the globe, killing or mutating most organic life. The surviving humans take refuge in an underground city, determined to return home. But after generations of failures and botched attempts, hope is beginning to dwindle. That is, until a young scientist makes a unique discovery–and … discovery–and everything changes. Suddenly, there’s reason to hope again, and it rests within a group of genetically engineered children that are both human and Variant.
Terry is one of these children, modified and trained to endure the harsh conditions of a planet he cannot begin to understand. After years of preparation, Terry thinks he knows what to expect. But the reality is far stranger than anything he can imagine–and what he will become is far more dangerous.
Read the series one Amazon reviewer Donald G. Simpson says: “This is one of the best put together science fiction books I have read in years. The character development is strong from start to finish. There are no loose ends or rabbit trails … everything ties together. The only regret I had in reading this book was when I looked and saw there were only eight pages left…I can’t wait to see if there is a follow up to this great start. You will not believe it is this author’s first book!”
The Variant Saga boxset includes all four books in the series.

Great sci-fi series set in a innovative world with great characters and a thrilling plot
These books start off with an interesting idea (a gas destroys most of life on Earth) but becomes tedious as the reader progresses through the books. So many story points are presented and then barely resolved or not at all. It seems the author was in a hurry to get to the end of this series.
Some interesting ideas but not worth the time to get to the end.
I liked the first book the best and would have given it 4 stars. By the final book I was pushing myself to finish.
I really liked this series of books. The story, set in the future, has very interesting twists and turns. It kept me reading just to see how the story ended. Did I say I Really Liked this Series!
Entertaining. A little tedious in spots. Liked the originality.
Light but thought-provoking! I couldn’t put it down once I got past the first book!
This is not deep literature, but it was entertaining.
Characters/dialogue wooden. For all its shortcomings I was still glad my down load included the entire series because I did want to know what happened next. Violence minimal. No nasty sexual or language issues.
This series is really a good read. Very imaginative and going to other places keeps you turning the pages
Good, not great. Premise was wonderful
But science fiction was quickly left behind for fantasy world building. Characters were rather two-dimensional at best: quick friendships are made between alien species with no problems, no conflicts.
Great read, was wishing there were more by the end but it ended very satisfactorily.
I really enjoyed the first book. Then it started getting tedious and moving slowly. I like the characters, it’s an interesting plot, but it bogs down on detail. I’m over half way through the series and stopped reading. There’s just not enough interest to keep me reading.
I couldn’t put it down. I had to finish all books quickly.
Great characters in interesting parallel worlds. Enough action to keep you interested throughout the story. A good read.
Even for a box set, extremely long. Awesome world building.
Read book one and it was fascinating!
Read the first book for the series. Characters are good, action is good, story is good. My only issue is with the high emotion sequences. They seem almost melodramatic and throw me out a little. Otherwise, I’m enjoying the series.
I really enjoyed the story line but I will say that it dragged in parts. I do believe parts could have been deleted to make it move at a more exciting rate. But, on the plus side, the characters were well developed which is why I gave it four stars–even though I really think of it as a 3-1/2 star book. Also, it was great to read a book with no grammatical or punctuation errors of note.
Edge of seat!
I shared your character’s experiences throughout this saga and enjoyed them all immensely.
