Wicked Torment is the 1st book in USA Today bestselling author, Carole Mortimer’s, NEW Regency Sinners series.Author’s Note: The stories in the Regency Sinners, Regency Unlaced, Knight Security, and Alpha Series, have stronger sexual content and language than my other books.Eight gentlemen known in Society as The Sinners.Having all returned safely from Waterloo, these gentlemen now find … gentlemen now find themselves with the more dangerous task of discovering which of the ladies in Society has been acting as a spy for the enemy.
Dangerous to their hearts, that is.
Darius Strong, the Duke of Wolferton, known to his close friends as Wolf, cares little for what Society or anyone else thinks of him, and lives his life accordingly. Given the task of discovering whether Lady Beatrix Hanwell has been using her position in Society to garner information for the enemy puts him in something of a quandary, however. The two of them have met several times in the past, occasions when that lady had not hesitated to show her disapproval of him. Mainly by ignoring his existence. Which is going to make it difficult for Darius to get close enough to her to seduce her into revealing whether or not she is the guilty lady.
Beatrix is puzzled—and more than a little disturbed—when Darius Strong, the exceedingly handsome and scandalous Duke of Wolferton, begins to show her marked attention. As a widow aged seven and twenty, and possessing no great beauty, his interest is mystifying to say the least. Much as she tries to fight her growing attraction to Wolf she is failing miserably, as each meeting between the two of them draws her ever nearer to forgetting all propriety and simply giving in to his seduction.
Except her surrender means revealing the secret she has taken such pains to hide.
To Darius’s surprise he finds himself becoming intrigued by Beatrix. Not only intrigued but he desires her more deeply than any other woman he has ever met. So much so that he finds himself hoping she is not the lady they are seeking.
Is Beatrix guilty of treason, and if not what will her reaction be to Wolf when she discovers the truth behind his single-minded pursuit of her?

This book was hard to put down, it was so sexy and steamy.
Oh to have a Duke like Wolf!! And, Lady Beatrix, I loved the way their story started and ended!! Lots, of intrigue, and great storyline, with steamy love scenes!!
First of all, I Love all of the books I’ve had the pleasure of reading from Carole Mortimer!!!
The Duke of Wolferton, Darius Strong, just his name does things to me! He is enlisted by the Crown and his fellow agents to investigate if the widowed Lady Beatrix is guilty of treason. His plan is to go to her country estate and try to seduce her into giving herself away. Darius Strong is an aggressively assertive alpha male, extremely handsome and virile. Lady Beatrix is no great beauty, but she is attractive to the Duke.
When he arrived at her estate she is in the middle of having a house party. He insists on staying, no matter how unexpected and surprising the Duke’s visit is.
I laughed and loved at the shockingly sensual way the Duke would tell her what he was going to do to her! Then on the first night he goes to her, ohh the erotic steam level is high!!
But, in the short time Darius is there he finds out through Bea that her husband was cold and cruel to her and never gave her sexual satisfaction. Darius and Bea find themselves attracted to each other.
This story had unexpected twists and turns and an exciting ending. I especially super loved the Epilogue <3 I look for ward to reading the rest of her delicious books in this series!!

A quick, steamy read. Great characters. Humor. And a great love story. Would like to read the others in the series.
What a wonderful love story! Darius was very unhappy about having to seduce the plain Bea into confessing she was a spy. Bea had stored up guilt also and didn’t want any entanglements now that her awful husband was dead. In a few short days their world went topsy-turvy. Both were released from their terrible pasts to find the passionate love that awaited them. Can’t wait to read the rest of the series. Great job!
Wicked Torment by Carole Mortimer is a fairly quick historical romance, perfect for those with limited time for reading. Ms. Mortimer has delivered a well-written book and filled it with outstanding characters. Darius has been tasked with investigating Bea for spying. Bea is surprised and a bit horrified when Darius crashes her weeklong party. Their story is loaded with drama, humor, smokin’ hot sex and suspicion. I loved this book from the first page to the last and look forward to reading more from Carole Mortimer soon. Wicked Torment is book 1 of the Regency Sinners Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I found the premise behind the action of the book–one of a possible 7 ladies has been feeding information to the enemy—flimsy. There was no reason forthcoming as to how they know it was a woman, or indeed, how they know the information (also not revealed) was passed at the five house parties that these women apparently attended. Let’s not explore the fact of their servants, who would also have been in attendance. It did not detract from the story, since there had to be some reason for the Duke to crash the heroine’s party, but for mystery readers, it would be a glaring problem.
Brilliantly written with such a surprise ending, who would have thought…. Just goes to show, if you’re going to tell the truth, better tell it all and leave nothing out.
As usual Carole Mortimer has entertained with this story about Darius Strong and Beatrix with their evolving trust of and love for each other.
The sexual content is quite graphic but you were warned about this in the publishers summary of the book so it shouldn’t offend if you have chosen to read it.
The story itself flows nicely and it certainly kept me guessing as to whether Bea was actually the one guilty of treason against the crown.
Most enjoyable and I’m happy to recommend this story.
