On the Chase is book two in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit by Katie Ruggle. You can read this book without having read book one, but I feel you should read in order.
This story covers Hugh Murdoch and his canine partner, Lexi, who is the only drug sniffing dog in the town.
Kaylee was hard to like at first. She’s all about the designer cloths and her large walk in closet. She’s worked hard to get where she is. Coming from a life of little to having everything she wants. She was very material orientated, but her life takes a major turn when she discovers that her boyfriend might not be who she thought.
That opening scene in the big fancy house of her boyfriends family was intense. And what she discovers sends Kaylee into hiding and she finds herself in small town living with a family of siblings (our heroine from book one). Now Kaylee is back to having nothing and working minimum wage.
I eventually I warmed up to Kaylee. She eventually realizes that what she truly lost was her best friend, Penny, and that the life she was making isn’t what is important. She really takes a liking to Jules and the family and eventually the town and it’s people.
Hugh is the jokester, has a lock picking problem, is not trusting, but all-around a great guy. I love how much he cares about his friends and his canine partner, Lexi.
Hugh and Kaylee aka Grace as she goes by. These two kinda biker/joke, but in a fun way. Their talks are a way to get each other to come out of the funk or not think about the issues plaguing them. As they start to spend time together, weird things happen around them. Kaylee think’s it’s who she’s hiding from and that she is endangering the people around her.
We get a great cast of characters. The suspense and who is doing the bad things builds wonderful as does the romance between Hugh and Kaylee.
Narration: Callie Beaulieu does a wonderful job again with her narration of On the Chase. I like her voices for all the characters, both men, women, and kids. I’m enjoying listening to this series and plan to continue in audio.
On the Chase was a fun story. I really like Hugh and his jokester ways. I also like his canine partner, Lexi. Kids and canine’s add a little something more to stories and I really enjoy when they are in the books I’m reading.
Rated: 3.5 Stars
As usual with Ruggle, her very appealing characters jump off the page and face their dilemmas with class.
Katie Ruggle knocked it out of the park with this one. I love her books, they have all my favorite things! Genuine wonderful characters that draw you in from the first page and make it easy to root for their happy ever after. The women are smart, strong and determined while the men are alpha protectors that love their brothers as much as the women they fall for. The author knits tight groups that work together in small town settings that just bring the reader in for the duration. Then the crazy action and mysteries kick in and her books become the ones you CAN NOT PUT DOWN. Her stories are really well paced and so satisfying. Start with the first in the series if you can and read them all, it’s worth it as the characters and their relationships continue to develop. I can’t wait to start Otto’s book!
I got hooked quickly in the first book in this series and while the author wrapped it up nicely, she introduced a new character and a new twist to lead to the next story. And I enjoyed this one every bit as much.
Old characters dip into and out of the action as they all work together in one way or another. The ladies may play the part of a damsel in distress, but they don’t wait for one of the sexy alpha’s to rescue them. They get right in the thick of things.
And the part I’m sure you are waiting for. The dogs! Not only can Katie give us genuine human characters, she also does this with her four legged ones. you’ll fall in love with each one. You’ll fear for their lives as much as their human partners. They are working dogs, trained for specific duties and highly intelligent, yet also gentle, loving, and up to some silly antics.
A series like this is made to order for me. I met all of the character’s in the first book and each one that comes after has a secondary character step up and have their own story.
Suspense, romance and sharp and witty dialogue keep the story moving at a fast clip. I’d love to this made into a movie or series. there would never be a dull moment.
This was my first book by this author, the cover and blurb caught my attention.
Kaylee witnesses a crime and is on the run. Can she start her life over and stay safe?
This was an action packed, entertaining drama with a romance imminent. Their chemistry sizzled and their banter mostly funny..sometimes irritating and whiny.
There were two plots here that became connected and I was hoping of course the good guys would win.
An entertaining, fun read.
On the Chase involves Hugh, one of Theo’s partners from book 1. He’s been injured and no longer on street. Sitting behind a desk with his K9 partner is pretty boring but running into the new occupant of Jules’ home brightens his day. She beautiful, mysterious, and lights up like a firecracker with his teasing.
Contacting the same person who relocated Jules and her family, Kaylee has become part of the large family in the rundown house in a small Colorado town. Known as Grace, she’s trying to make her way in unfamiliar waters with a hotter-than-sin cop watching her every move. Their slow boiling attraction increases intensity with one passion-filled kiss and just as quickly cools right off when someone takes a shot at them.
I enjoyed the content, the pacing, characters, and world building. There is character development but keep in mind that Grace (along with Jules and her family) is harboring a huge secret and to let anything slip, especially to a cop, could be disastrous. The dynamics between the three cops in the series are wonderful. They truly are brothers in all ways that matter whether they are sporting the uniform or not. Jules and her family accepted Grace immediately and she became one of the family.
There is continued character development in On the Chase with both the new character and everyone we met in book 1. I was able to feel the emotions of the characters – Grace becoming accustomed to her new home, anxiety over being discovered by those hunter for her, Hugh’s feelings for Grace, and the continued build-up of Jules’ situation. The world-building also allows for clear visualization of the story as I read along. I enjoyed another action and emotion-filled novel by Katie Ruggle.
As much as I fell in love with all of the K9 cops when I read Run to Ground, I didn’t realize that Hugh was going to steal my heart so deeply. That quick wit that doesn’t stop and gets annoying? Yep, that’s my husband. I love him, but the man drives me bananas. It was fun to watch Kaylee/Grace go from annoyance to acceptance to missing that banter when he wasn’t around.
Grace’s situation is much different from what Jules is running from in the first book (and still). Grace’s life is in danger. She saw things she wishes she could unsee, but she can’t. And those things make her a witness against a pretty powerful man. Unfortunately, he’s powerful enough to have people of authority in his pocket so she is unsure who she can trust. Thus, she runs far, far away.
Of course Hugh, Theo, and Otto are suspicious of Jules’ “childhood friend” as soon as she hits town. They still know there’s some mystery that Jules and the kids are hiding, but have come to know and love her enough to trust her and not go digging into her life. But can they trust Grace? They want to know what she’s hiding. Soon it’s obvious that Grace may not be the only one in danger, has her past followed her also putting Jules and the rest of her family in danger just by association?
Just like the first story in this series, this story is action packed. So many things happen to Hugh and Grace it’s hard to know where the danger is coming from. Yet at no time does it get confusing or convoluted. The author did a beautiful job of keeping the flow of the story smooth while keeping the suspense high.
I don’t want to say too much since it is a suspense book, but I have to say that Otto is an even bigger pull for me for the next book. What the heck is this guy about? His house is something else and I’m curious to find out how he came about having such a place. And, although it seems Grace’s story may be wrapped up, there are still so many things left up in the air when it comes to all the people living in Jules’ house. I’m looking forward to each new discovery.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and the second book in the “Rocky Mountain K9 Unit” series. I found this to be a very enjoyable read and could be read as a standalone. The author starts this book off with great action. I must say the heroine was very courageous and resourceful. Without giving away too much on the story, she finds herself in a new place with a new identity and multiple cops as friends. But can she trust these men after what she’s been through? I really enjoyed reading the K9 back story. I love dogs and this just made my love for them even stronger. Even though the hero was funny and a bit questionable, I did find myself liking him in spite of his questionable actions. He’s good with his dog/partner and is fiercely protective. If you like action and holycrapwhatelsecouldhappen moments in your books then this is a book for you.

Loved it.
Katie Ruggle’s series are awesome. Great easy fun suspenseful reads!!!
After reading Run to Ground (with awesomely grumpy Theo), I wasn’t sure I was going to like Hugh. He seemed a bit of an a$$ – one of those wisecracking jerks that is a little too much of a guy’s guy. But I severely underestimated Ruggle’s skills! I absolutely loved Hugh from the first page to the last and not once did I have an unkind thought about him. He’s a truly good guy, cares about those around him, and wants to do good in the world. Meeting Kaylee, who is definitely hiding something and who tugs at something in Hugh like no one before, has all of those hero feelings on high alert.
Kaylee is surprisingly engaging as well. At first she seems a little too prissy but she quickly gets over her “city” ways and embraces her new situation. Avoiding (and resisting) Hugh is harder than it should be (because the man is tenacious) but she starts to have trouble remembering why he’s bad news.
Just like with Run to Ground, Ruggle brings a good amount of danger to the second book in the series. All of the elements work together beautiful and give readers a good suspense element to go with their love story. But don’t worry if you missed the first story because she helps you keep up … but I’m pretty sure you should read them both because they are pretty darn good 🙂

Enjoyed very much
Sometimes a page turner, other times it dragged.
This is the second book in the series and I am looking forward to the third!
I look forward to each of Ruggle’s books- no exception here. Always has a little different twist to her stories
Welcome back to the next installment in the Rocky Mountain K-9 series, with this book featuring K9 Officer Hugh Murdoch and his partner Lexi. Kaylee Ramay, flees Los Angeles after she helps three men being tortured in her date’s uncle’s basement escape. Kaylee’s friend recommends someone who will give her a new identity and Kaylee ends up in Monroe, Colorado now known as Grace. Jules and her siblings from the first book in the series are her new roommates which leads to Kaylee meeting Hugh Murdoch and Lexi. Someone is out to murder Hugh (storyline began in the first book but no need to read the first book first to catch up) and along with the threat to Kaylee there is never a dull moment. Get ready for sarcastic remarks and plenty of police action in this town that by all appearances is closing almost down for the winter. All of the characters are entertaining and I can’t wait to return to Monroe for the next in the series. Warning: Adult Sexual Content – which you can skip over and still fully enjoy the book.
