The melding of the contemporary western with paranormal elements–think Big Valley meets Alphas–makes for a compelling, fresh mix for Jillian David’s sophomore series. Growing up as an honorary Taggart, Eric Patterson found the family he’d always wanted. Almost. He couldn’t ever manage to see the clan’s youngest and only daughter, stubborn spitfire Shelby, quite like a little sister. Suddenly, … little sister. Suddenly, his long-suppressed feelings are determined to come to light.
Too bad Shelby’s cursed. Her double whammy psychic powers to read emotions and locate anyone anywhere have always made relationships impossible–and now they’ve begun to endanger her life. If she uses her echolocation skills again, it just might kill her.
But when a malevolent supernatural force invades the valley, threatening the Taggarts and their neighbors, the Brands, Eric and Shelby must contend with both their blossoming feelings and the increasing danger. Does Shelby dare risk using her powers one more time, sacrificing her own life to save Eric?

I really enjoyed this story about Shelby and Eric. Having read book 4 then book 1 and 2, I finally see how most of the story pieces fit together! The suspense generated by the evil shadow was well balanced by the fun bantering between many of the main characters. Shelby also had some interesting confrontations with Wyatt Brand. Needless to say, wooden doweling and shopping carts will now elicit some new images for self defence! As more pieces to the puzzle are reviewed about the conflict between the Taggats and the Brands, more supernatural elements are revealed The story ends with a bit of a cliffhanger, and a quick HEA for Shel and Eric – yet there are so many unresolved issues. I am looking forward to seeing how book 3 contributes to how the mystery is finally solved. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. Will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Looking for a paranormal goodie to read then take a chance on this one I bet you will feel it fits the bill. Eric and Shelby were wonderful characters and their story is full of action and suspense plus some steamy romance that will get your motor running. It was just a pleasure reading this well-done piece. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.
This suspense filled storyline was a particularly enjoyable read and the characters were so well developed that I was totally engaged as each page was turned until the very last page!
This is the story of Shelby Taggart and Eric Patterson a close family friend. Shelby like the rest of her family has special powers; hers are to read people’s emotions and to locate people. The use of the powers has consequences to Shelby though and it puts her into several bad predicaments. Due to her ability to feel others feelings Shelby has kept to herself and stayed out of relationships so that she doesn’t have to be so drained. Eric has been close to the family since he was a boy and has had a crush on Shelby for a while. He has a hunting Business with one of her brothers and also helps on the family ranch. They are both on a search and rescue team together. He is honestly worried about Shelby and the use of her powers and the aftereffect on her. Thankfully he is with her to take care of her in several of the incidents that she is involved in. This book also continues the feud between the Taggart’s and the neighbors the Brand’s and the evil creature that is coming after the family.
It was well worth the read. I enjoyed this book and this series. The book did give you enough information to figure out what was going on but the series itself is really good so I suggest reading them all. All of the family and the characters are interesting.

This is Shelby and Eric’s story. I feel badly for both of them. Shelby has this power that is overwhelming to say the least, and Eric is in love with her but needs to shut down his thoughts to be around her. I can’t imagine. They definitely have chemistry and there is a romance going on amidst everything else.
I think this book ventured a bit further into the paranormal than the last. Evil seems to be lurking around every corner. Shelby’s powers keep morphing. Ruth and Odie have entered the Taggert’s life, adding an interesting aspect. There is so much going on in this book. Who or what is trying to destroy the Taggert’s, and why?
This book is full of emotions along with mystery, intrigue, and suspense. Much of the book keeps you on the edge of your seat. I believe you can read this as a standalone because the author gives you enough background, but I honestly think it would be more enjoyable if you start with book one.
Eric and Shelby’s story has a HFN, but the mystery of what is going on is not resolved in this book. The series seems to get better with each book.

Longing and Loving Legacy
Shelby Taggart and Eric Patterson have been friends since childhood. Eric is also the best friend of Shelby’s twin, Kerr. As often happens, friendship turns to interest, and then turns into love. Sadly, Shelby’s special gift has kept her from intimate relationships, and Eric’s issues with loss and control have kept him from pursuing the woman of his heart. What happens next is part of the subject of Legacy Lost by Jillian David.
Both Eric and Shelby are not necessarily likable characters, but they are both interesting even with their ton of baggage. Ms. David did a very good job of making their relationship issues both believable and compelling. She also made the paranormal danger more sinister then the prior book.
As with the first book in the series, the over-arching danger to the Taggart family is not brought to a conclusion. However, I was happy that Eric and Shelby make decisions about their future together. If their banter and chemistry is any indication, they could have an interesting life together. That is if they survive the evil that wants to destroy them.
Content alert: This book contains swearing (secular and religious) and vulgarities (including “F” word). It also contains passionate kissing, and descriptive sexual intimacies with an erotic edge.
FYI: I also posted my review on Amazon (as Rural Reader) and on Good Reads.

Legacy Lost by Jillian David is the 2nd book in her Hell’s Valley series. This can be read without reading the first book ( Legacy of Lies), but as there are characters from the first book, and an underline story going on, I would recommend you read the first book first.
Legacy Lost is set a few weeks after the last book. I won’t give any details away, but it does explain a few things in this book.
Shelby has a gift, she calls it a curse, she has the ability to “find” people, she is able to locate anyone, so it’s a great help in her second job, a search and rescue member. But this “gift” has a price, with it comes terrible headaches and more recently temporary blindness! But it doesn’t stop Shelby from using it. And in addition she has the ability to feel people’s emotions ! So Shelby tends to keep to herself, relationships for her are too painful, to feel her partners feelings, their regrets and heaven forbid, if it was a horrible experience for him, she would get all those feelings.
All Eric has wanted since his family left him, was for somebody to love, and finding and making friends with Shelby’s brother gave him that family to care for, the only blip on his horizon …… Shelby. Eric has loved her for ages, but he can’t get past his letting go of his rigid control to tell her how he feels, and past the “friend” label Shelby has saddled him with.
Eric has no knowledge of Shelby’s gift until it was revealed in book one. And when he does, he’s angry and hurt, he always thought he was family, but family doesn’t keep secrets from each other.
Things take a passionate turn when Shelby almost dies; this spurs Eric’s feelings into action. And from there they struggle with their feelings. Will Eric let go of his rigid control and let Shelby set the pace for their relationship? Will Shelby let all her guards down and truly let someone in?
Things keep happening to the Taggart family, and the Brand family are a big part of the problem. And I have a feeling it’s only going to escalate.
There is a connection to the last book, and it just adds more questions to my list. But it’s a good read, the mystery surrounding the family, and if you’ve read some of David’s other books, you’ll notice a few old characters. That was a lovely surprise.
I’m loving this series and can’t wait to read more about the scary force trying to kill the Taggart family, and the rest of the Taggart men finding their women
