Olive’s to-do list: Pay the rent, feed the cat, save Faythander. Again. When the fairy realm faces a new, terrifying threat from a goblin Spellweaver, Olive Kennedy leaves her home in Houston to travel through the most dangerous places in Faythander in order to confront him. While there, she learns that history is a muddled subject, especially when elves are involved. Her only comfort comes from … from Kull, her Viking warrior sidekick—who somehow negates her bad fortune. Yet how long can their relationship last when his past is brought to light? Olive will be tested beyond anything she has endured so far as the secrets of Faythander’s sordid and bloody past are exposed—one that could irrevocably alter the future and destroy the lives of everyone she loves.

I fell absolutely in love with book one with the fun and comedy that brought my attention to this author. This book didn’t have as much comedy to draw me in but it does have an awesome plot with some surprising twists and turns throughout the story.
This book started right off where book one left off and I love how the author can bring these words on the pages alive and keep us on the edge of our seats the entire ride!!
Wow, what a wild ride this story was!! The author covered a lot in this book. We found out more about Olive Kennedy in this story and quite a shocker about her…..mother………
There were many original characters along with some new characters. We get to know more about her dad and her love for Kull is stronger than ever in this story. There were moments when I was shocked and in awe at some of the scenes. I really didn’t know these shocking events were even coming. You go along reading and BAM you get hit with a shocker and my mouth was left hanging open in horror. It’s an amazingly well written story for everybody to enjoy. I highly recommend it.
I hated this book with the white-hot passion of a thousand burning suns!! How in the world could Kull and Olive NOT be together?? It can’t be true. I thought it was bad enough when Kull’s father forbade their relationship. But now that King Herrick is gone and Kull is the apparent leader of the Wults, AND he seemingly blames her for not saving his father’s life (even though she couldn’t have done so) – it seems there is no way that they can ever be together. It simply isn’t fair.
I (obviously) got very drawn into this story, much as I did in the first novel of the series. However, I wasn’t as impressed with this one. Everything that occurred just seemed like part of one endless pilgrimage for an intended purpose that was to no avail in the end. Overall, there was way too much death and sadness in this tome for me. (I’m such a lightweight when it comes to grief!)
There was a lot learned about many secrets kept by various individuals, groups and species, all of which was extremely interesting, and possibly built more of the background for later storylines. But the relationship between Kull and Olive was disappointing all along in this volume. They didn’t really seem to make a connection or to further their relationship at all. In fact, they seemed closer at the end of the last book than they did all throughout this one.
The saddest part of the entire thing though, had to be that King Herrick probably realized right before he died how truly special and valuable is Olive. She followed his orders and did as he asked, even though she knew that she (and Kull) would suffer the pain of watching him pay the ultimate price. But she protected the Everblossom nonetheless and thereby saved Faythander. Although a fat lot of good it seemed to do anyone!
(I’m going to go off and sulk now, until I can get up the courage to start volume three. At least there are five more books in the series. Maybe some redeeming event will happen at some point to make me feel better about things.)
I enjoyed Spellweaver even more than Dreamthief! Seeing Olive make greater strides in her magic and personal life was delightful. Kull continued to make me laugh with his wit and confidence. Grantham does an excellent job of writing an unpredictable and unique story. I especially reveled in the added romance between Kull and Olive throughout their adventures.
After the events of “Dreamthief” it’s hard to imagine a worthy successor. Well “Spellweaver” sees your skepticism and raises you on the badassery. There are secret histories, secret societies, and a secret race no one could have predicted. Olive and Kull get to discover far more than they bargained for as the magic of Faythander is threatened. In the end, everything in their world is at risk with all hope and responsibility resting in Olive’s hands.
Once more, Olive is a perfect narrator with her wit, sarcasm, and overall sense of resenting responsibility, but still determined to get the job done.
