Fey both beautiful and vicious hide in the Georgia backwoods, guarded by four-hundred-year-old peanut farmer, bootlegger, and wizard Jedediah Shine.Protecting humanity and the fey from one another is normally child’s play compared to teaching magic to his new foster daughter and a Cherry Coke addicted dragonling, parenting an out-of-control half-elven teen sorceress or keeping his jealous elven … keeping his jealous elven ex-lover away from his new girlfriend.
Jedediah’s delicate balancing act is thrown into turmoil when rebellious, young centaurs launch a genocidal war against humanity from within his borders. At the same time, a vengeful mercenary company lays a trail of suspicious murders directly to Jedediah’s door. Unwitting pawns to a deeper menace, both serve a centuries-long plot to steal magic’s deepest secret.
The bloody conflict thrusts Jedediah’s family into Death’s reach. As the body bag count rises and law enforcement closes in, Jedediah is forced to make desperate choices to protect his loved ones and magic itself by stopping the murders in his wood.

This was a great fantasy story. I love reading books with magic and this one is great!
I really enjoyed this book! The plot itself is very unique and memorable, with a descriptive setting that would be great for to model a DnD campaign after. I really connected with the characters and loved their development throughout the book. Can’t wait to read more!
For the record, I received an Advanced Review Copy (ARC) of this book with the request that I leave a voluntary honest review for other potential readers. That having been said, here is my honest opinion and review of this book. Sword and Sorcery, Mythology and Magic, these are 2 of my favorite genres to read. This story combines a bit of both into the tale. It has excellent world building with complex societies and character development with the most interesting details and motivations behind their actions. The wizard and the dragon are my favorite characters. You will find that the story is well written and easy to read while the pace flows along nicely from start to finish keeping the tension high so that you are drawn in and with plenty of twists and turns and surprises for just about anyone. I would definitely recommend this book and feel that it was more than worth the time to read it. Hopefully the sequel will live up to the standard set by this first book.
This intricate modern fantasy features all manner of interesting magical creatures including wizards, dragons, elves, and centaurs existing in plain sight of ordinary humans thanks to their ability to glamour. A dog might just be a dragon, a woman on horseback may be a centaur. However, not is all as wonderful as it sounds. There is tension between various factions bent on revenge for perceived wrongs. Be prepared for powerful, non-stop action in a meticulously crafted world filled with unique characters. Mr. Allen’s spellbinding writing will enchant lovers of all things fantastical.

This was a really fun yet surprisingly realistic rendition of how wizards and other beings might coexist in contemporary American society. Most people expect wizards to live in mansions or castles and to be eccentric wealthy individuals. I did not expect to find a rich hobby farmer who doubles as the guardian of a hidden supernatural sanctuary. The rich hobby farmer projects “good ole boy” well and his daughter and foster children (including the dragonling!) make his life interesting – as if neighbour conflicts, legal shenanigans and various conspiracies were not enough. I definitely need to read the next book.

At first this book was hard for me to get into because the story starts right out with no real introduction. After I got past the first couple of chapters though it got easier to follow and started to really get my attention. Jedediah, the Guardian, protects both the world of Fey and the world of humans. Trouble is brewing on his land though when he keeps finding dead bodies. His search for answers to what is happening leads him into even more difficulties than he expects. His daughter, Lenea, poses as his farm hand and gets involved with someone he doesn’t exactly want her involved in which causes even more trouble. On top of all that, he is training a dragonling. Jedediah’s hands are full and getting fuller. He must protect his daughter and dragonling as well as his girlfriend and her son. All while trying to figure out what is really going on and also while being personally attacked by a group of mercenaries. It makes for a very action packed story and is a delight to read.

Jedediah the mythical guardian is under attack
Jedediah is an amazing wizard. His three charges cause him typical parenting problems. On top of training and raising the three, someone is out to destroy his reputation. He continues to keep a positive outlook. This story was an entertaining read. It was fun and scary. It has a lot of twists and turns. The characters are well developed. Some are likable and others are not. I look forward to the next book in the series.
