When a woman is shot in a cannabis patch, Arly Hanks must restore order to her Ozarks community, in this sharp-witted mystery by an Agatha Award–winning author. When small-town police chief Arly Hanks returns to Maggody, Arkansas, after vacation, she finds the population has risen to a booming 802. Among the newbies: Madame Celeste, the psychic who’s holding locals in thrall with her predictions … with her predictions of doom; a handsome new high school guidance counselor; and a gaggle of mantra-chanting hippies who have turned the old general store into the source for cosmic harmony. Unfortunately, life in Maggody is anything but harmonious.
Robin Buchanon—a member of Maggody’s most abundant family—has been murdered. The moonshiner, prostitute, and mother of four foul-mouthed little bad seeds was found shot to death in a booby-trapped marijuana field. Assuming the weed harvesters are sending a message to trespassers, Arly decides to hold vigil and set her own trap. But when another, seemingly unrelated, murder catches Arly off-guard, even Madame Celeste can’t predict where this case is headed.
An Agatha Award finalist, Mischief in Maggody is just the kind of “bawdy, cheerful entertainment” that has brought countless fans to Joan Hess’s quirky, long-running Maggody series (Kirkus Reviews).
Mischief in Maggody is the 2nd book in the Arly Hanks Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

All the books in the Maggody series are wonderful, and this is no exception.
The Maggody books are cute, lite reading. Very enoyable.
All of the “Maggody” mysteries are so funny. I love the characters, I like the books written by Joan Hess are good, but the Maggody ones are my favorites. I even like to read them over again!
Just silly and funny but well written. Enjoyable if zany!
Once in a while I need a change of pace from my usual reading. The Maggody series of books give me that.
I’m very sorry to say I just couldn’t get into this story. I found myself bogged down with the language and wordiness and descriptions. I read a little at a time and put it down. By the next day when I picked it up again, I had lost continuity and interest.
Delightful book and series. Fun reading!
Great cast of characters. Fun summer read

Fun read. Great characters.
I’m so glad there are more books in this series! Laugh out loud funny and you will love the people!
Wonderful!
I enjoyed this book more than anything I’ve read in a long while! I don’t think you have to be from the South to enjoy these characters but if you are you’ll recognize a lot of the personalities in this book. It wasn’t great literature but it was a fun read.
always fun to visit Maggody
I’ve been a regular “Follower” of this series. Arly and her mother, Ruby Bee, are “down-to-earth” characters, in a small-town setting with very “interesting” supporting characters!
This book is very sarcastically funny, witty and unpredictable.
Good stuff!
Joan Hess has not let her readers down yet with one of these books. I grab one of these for light reading and a good laugh. Fun characters and wonderful descriptions. Waiting for the next one.
