Imperial law enforcer Amaranthe Lokdon is good at her job: she can deter thieves and pacify thugs, if not with a blade, then by toppling an eight-foot pile of coffee canisters onto their heads. But when ravaged bodies show up on the waterfront, an arson covers up human sacrifices, and a powerful business coalition plots to kill the emperor, she feels a tad overwhelmed.
Worse, Sicarius, the … Sicarius, the empire’s most notorious assassin, is in town. He’s tied in with the chaos somehow, but Amaranthe would be a fool to cross his path. Unfortunately, her superiors order her to hunt him down. Either they have an unprecedented belief in her skills… or someone wants her dead.

I read this book in a few hours, I couldn’t put it down to save my life. It was so interesting and unpredictable, it is one of my favorite reads right now!
I have been an enthusiastic reader of every L. Buroker novel I’ve bought; And I’ve bought a lot of them. She needs to keep writing to feed my habit. I particularly enjoy the way she combines action with witty dialog.
I enjoy reading various genres. This one is an urban fantasy about a female “enforcer” (cop) who discovers a conspiracy and is forced to go rogue. She builds a team of mercenaries that includes a crazy mix of personalities and professions, including a famous and feared assassin, whom she’s never sure is going to aid them or just kill them. Lots of …
A brilliant story cross the genres incredible character development I really felt like I knew the hero and heroine. the story starts out with a bang and just keeps going and going.I definitely had a hard time putting it down and I’m going to jump all over the sequel.
Lindsay Buroker is a prolific indie author and co-host of the Science Fiction & Fantasy Marketing Podcast. Since I’ve been listening to her marketing advice for several years now, I figured it was time to check out her craft by reading one of her books: The Emperor’s Edge, the first book in the series of the same name. I didn’t love it, but I …
Loved the first in this series. I’m a character driven reader and this book did not disappoint. Each character is fleshed out and unique. I loved the authors whimsical flared and her world building, which is believable and intriguing. Once I finished this book I bought book 2 straight away, keen to stay connected with the characters and follow …
GreT characters with both faults and goodness. A ragtag bunch but I was cheering them on the whole way.
Great book. Didn’t want to put it down.
I “discovered” Lindsay Buroker accidentally — she was doing a podcast on marketing and writing of independently published fiction stories. In particular, it was an interview with Nick Webb. I thought she was very smart. Not ever having heard of her before, I went to her website and looked through her books. She offered The Emperor’s Edge for …
Previously I read “Flash Gold,” by Lindsay Buroker and loved that one, so I decided to try this one as well. To my surprise, it had two characters in it that I’d read about before and enjoyed, ex-cop Amaranthe and cold-blooded killer Sicarius from “Ice Cracker II.” Though “Ice Cracker” was all short-story format, “Emperor’s Edge” is a full-length …
Wasn’t sure if I was going to like this and it’s been in my to read queue for a long time; a friend had suggested it. However, I was really pleasantly surprised and have even downloaded the short story about Sicarius that is actually a prequel to this book. I really enjoyed the dynamics of the band of misfits, Books and Maldonado as well as …
This book surprised and delighted me and it’s a series I plan to reread at some point. The author mixes in humor and wit to a fairly intense set of circumstances and it made the story fun and interesting. I really enjoy having some kind of emotional reaction to a book, in this case it was laughter and I loved that.
I read the whole series and can say I was captivated and dug in for the duration. I fell in love with all the characters and ran every twist and turn with them. You have to read the whole series. The characters evolve realistically and the story is amazing.
This is the first book in The Emperor’s Edge Saga. I just finished the whole saga and it kept getting better with each book! I highly recommend you read this book, and the rest of the collection too.
I enjoyed entering the world that Lindsay Burokers created.
You know, as I was reading, the sexism encountered by a woman in a “man’s career” was a turn off that made me think the book was okay at best; however, I don’t think a book that was just okay would have me looking up its sequel immediately after finishing it. Amaranthe is a naive, but lovable underdog and skilled with deduction. Her charisma is …
This whole series was a catching read with characters you look forward to digging more and more into.
Fun fun fun
A fun read that provides a fantasy escape from mundane things like fixing the night’s dinner ! 😉
This is the first book of a delightfully entertaining series. Amarantha has a quirky sense of humor and a passion for proving herself in a male dominated profession. She is also wildly optimistic and sees the good or at least the potential in almost everyone she meets. When she is set up as part of a nefarious plot to overthrow the emperor she …
