Tara and her brother Kyle are sent to stay with their estranged grandparents when their mother is hospitalised. May and Peter Folcroft seem warm and charming at first, and the house, hidden in the base of the mountains, is idyllic.
But strange things keep happening.
The swing moves on its own. Peter paces around the house late at night. Doors slam and curtains shift when no one is inside. … one is inside. Tara begins to suspect the old house is haunted.
When a storm cuts the phone line, May shifts from doting to obsessive. Tara and Kyle must try to keep up the pretext of a happy family, but an empty journal and locked room provide clues to the unforgivable lies, secrets and decades-old murders entwined with the Folcrofts’ history.
And the ghosts are growing restless…

Fantastic book and really hard to put down! The story follows two young kids who are going to stay with their estranged grandparents after their mother was in a serious accident that has left her in a coma. Strange things keep happening in and around the home but otherwise the grandparents seem loving…, at first. When the daughter finds a journal that once belonged to her mother, everything starts to unravel.
Fun, spooky ghost story.
The Folcroft Ghosts by Darcy Coates seems to be a teen or preteen ghost story with a brother and sister staying with grandparents they haven’t met before. Their mother had been in an accident and now they have to stay somewhere. Things get creepy and all is not as it appears! Pretty darn good!
This was a really good book! I read it in a day and a half! Kept my attention and kept me glued to my kindle! The story is about two teens that go to live with their grandparents while their mother is recuperating in the hospital.
The grandparents are a doting elderly couple who want nothing more then the best for their grandchildren…or so it seems. Also the house they live in is supposedly haunted. The story just reaches in and pulls you into the house with the teens. Darcy Coates grabs the reader from the first page and she doesn’t let the reader go until the last page. Five star read for this book!
Her books are awesome!
This is a good horror story. Not everyone will think it’s a 5 star book, but it held my interest without being gory,so I really enjoyed it.
When two children are taken in by their grandparents, their fears and pain should go away. But these grandparents are a bit odd and a bit creepy.
When the breaks fail, the kids mom ends up seriously hurt and in hospital. A neighbor takes in the kids but gladly relinquishes them to their mom’s parents.
Questions arise as the two kids move into the home her mom grew up in. Why didn’t the grandparents come and get them? Why don’t they have neighbors and friends ever at their home? Why are the people in town worried about them? And who is running around at night outside?
The tension builds to a point but not very creepy plus too many holes in the plot. Where is child’s services when these two children are left with a neighbor. And once the children are sent to the grandparents, why is there no contact from an advocate or even a friend of their mom to check on them.
Not one I’d recommend as there are great ghostly books out there to read….and the ending just seemed off.
As with all of this author’s books, I thoroughly enjoyed this one.
You will enjoy
Great scene setting for the spooky to happen. Usually I find this the step that gets rushed resulting in my running away from the first appearance of something supernatural. I need a few creaky stairs and doors opening and closing on their own to set the mood. Great twists that I was not remotely expecting. I do wish there had been more of a haunting involved in this book, but still very entertaining.
This was an easy and quick but good read. It’s not fast paced but if done right I’m okay with that. I kept wanting to know what the secret was so the author did her job. I think she did a great job in describing the spooky parts. If you have a good enough imagination you could totally picture it..and then be spooked for a few seconds LoL
I have been reading Darcy’s stuff all week. This is the 3rd book in almost as many days. This one went fast, but not because I couldn’t put it down but because there was really nothing to it. The ending was amazing, but really it was only like the last hour of the book (25% or so). I won’t give up on her books because the last two that I read were amazing. Even though I’ve never seen the movie “The Visit” this book reminds me so much of the previews of this movie. I think I will read The Haunting of Gillespie House next.
It was an easy and enjoyable read. I enjoyed the story. The author kept it creepy enough to keep me interested. I finished it one sitting lol.
Awesome book kept me geussing till the end.
Loved this book. Never saw the end coming. Kind of creepy scary but loved it.
