In 1558, the ancient stones of Kingsbridge Cathedral look down on a city torn apart by religious conflict. As power in England shifts precariously between Catholics and Protestants, royalty and commoners clash, testing friendship, loyalty, and love.
Ned Willard wants nothing more than to marry Margery Fitzgerald. But when the lovers find themselves on opposing sides of the religious conflict dividing the country, Ned goes to work for Princess Elizabeth. When she becomes queen, all Europe turns against England. The shrewd, determined young monarch sets up the country’s first secret service to give her early warning of assassination plots, rebellions, and invasion plans. Over a turbulent half century, the love between Ned and Margery seems doomed as extremism sparks violence from Edinburgh to Geneva. Elizabeth clings to her throne and her principles, protected by a small, dedicated group of resourceful spies and courageous secret agents.
The real enemies, then as now, are not the rival religions. The true battle pitches those who believe in tolerance and compromise against the tyrants who would impose their ideas on everyone else—no matter what the cost.
Set during one of the most turbulent and revolutionary times in history, A Column of Fire is one of Follett’s most exciting and ambitious works yet. It will delight longtime fans of the Kingsbridge series and is the perfect introduction for readers new to Ken Follett.

Ken Follett makes 16th England come alive, no easy trick! Very enjoyable reading.
I love this series and was not disappointed in Column of Fire. The characters were well developed and the story true to the historical facts. I’m looking forward to the next book!
Not as powerful as the previous books in the series, but still far better then most books I’ve read lately.
Third in sequel I loved this book as much as first Pillars of the Earth
Interesting sequel to the first two books of the Kingsbridge series, but not as compelling with a very singular plot line. Not Follett’s best
Love ken follet! He never disappoints!
I’m a huge fan of all Ken Follet’s books, and the most recent did not disappoint. I look forward to the next novel in the ‘new world’.
This is the best book I’ve read for years, can’t wait till I have time for the next one.
Ken Follett is one of my favorite authors! If you loved his Pillar of the Earth series, this won’t disappoint!
Love the accurate historical settings of Follet’s books. They are page-turning and entertaining, yet I always feel that I am learning something about our history.
Ken Follett is one of the few perfect story tellers. If he writes it I read it.
A great book encompassing the Elizabethan Era in England, France, Spain and the Netherlands. A great historical novel. Very worth reading.
Excellent historical novel. Good story telling. Accurate history.
I like this series by Ken Follett.
Points out some very disturbing attributes of the human race through history, especially when read in sequence with Pillars of the Earth. I look forward to the opportunity to read the next Kingsbridge generations, which I expect to carry on the disturbing attributes.
Absolutely stunning, I loved it from beginning to end.
I picked this up because I love Pillars of the Earth and many other Follett books. Did not enjoy the second of this trilogy, but took a chance on the third. I’m a huge fan of the Elizabethan era so I’m enjoying this. It’s not Pillars of the Earth (nothing ever will be) but certainly enjoyable enough.
Pillars of the Earth was one of our family’s all time favorite books and this sequel does not disappoint. A true page turner!!
Anything by Follett is worth the time Always a great story
