Irritating characters! This seemed like it was written for middle school kids. Things just happen or appear with no real explanation. For example; a pit no one managed to fall into on the way in to the house suddenly was there and covered with snow that had stopped before nightfall the day before. And the bragging by the “Country’s Best Detectives” at the yearly convention was ridiculous. Really? They hate each other’s guts but get together to catch up and one up each other. And someone “won a trip” to said ridiculous convention. Riiiiiiight…
I have to share this from the book…
Holly is referring to a copy of a book she used to save herself in ridiculous, dramatic fashion with. She got a regular copy to read and has this to say about it:
She had to say, she was disappointed. (Totally ME with THIS book!) The plot had been a perfect combination of twists and turns but she’d already managed to figure out who the killer was, and she was only halfway through.
This book was the opposite of perfect twists and turns and I figured out the killer in the second chapter!
I got this in a four book set and already got The First Frost which was a total meh for free. I might try other books by this author but this series is a big swing and miss.
Great little detective story. Holly is delightful in her role. While you might think that you’ve solved it before the apex, you probably won’t. Like any good detective story, it has a reasonable amount of misdirection.
Blooming #1 – A quick, fun read with bits of suspense. Armed with self-doubt in the beginning, the main character uses integrity, determination and hard work to succeed and becomes an outstanding young woman while changing the life of the people around her. This book is filled with humor and suspense. The author did a good job with this book; still needs editing. But this recent work is vastly superior over her earlier writings. Like the main character, she persevered, too. 5*
Holly Winters books 1-4 5* Ms. Loren re-edited this series.
Snowed In With Death #1 – Just so silly, it’s funny. A humorous whodunit filled with the egos of six private detectives and a young female amateur sleuth. Even with the disdainful PIs present, the young woman shows them up. Just perfect for a few minutes of humor filled relaxation. 5*
A Fatal Frost #2 – Two stories in one. This book picks up where Snowed In With Death stops. The perfect breakfast opens the story! Another well written, quick murder mystery with our two characters from SIWD. The plot was interesting and kept the reader’s attention; great for a lunch break or a few moments of relaxation. I contacted the author to review her books after reading the ones I had in my Amazon library. 5*
Murder Beneath the Mistletoe #3 – An interesting story, a little more substantial than the first two books in this series. The characters are interesting, although one disappears without really knowing what’s up with him. The ending is kinda cool, which of course is where the next book picks up. 5*
Winter’s Last Victim #4 – Picks up where Murder Beneath the Mistletoe stopped. These four stories are related in more than one way. Interesting plot, the same good and bad character types and a new member to Holly’s “gang”. Plenty of humor, along with a couple of surprises. 5*
Holly Winters books 1-4 end
The Lavender of Larch Hall – A quick, easy read. A well written suspense with a touch of romance and humor. Just perfect for a few minutes with a cuppa. 5*
Very intriguing. Reminds me of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. A group of detectives, a contest winner and the event planned are snowbound. Then one of the detectives is murdered, Soon another detective is shot.; then another. You know the plot. These characters were well drawn. The plot was twisty even as the number of suspects dwindled. I did not guess the killer. This was a pleasant way to pass a lazy afternoon!
Short well written fast paced mystery with interesting characters and not so easy who done it. Reminds of the 10 little indians and other similar settings isolated murders till there was 1. Holly, our detective, deals with a group of proud egos, detectives, who meet to brag about their cases every year. She won an invitation to come even though she mostly plays piano and detects as an amatuer. She has her own insecurities to overcome but she has some skills that help. Scary but fun.
