Esper Files is everything I love about fantasy and steampunk. Its nice to pick up a book that is a brilliant reminder of why you love to read.
Hooking me on the first page this book is reminiscent of The Flash and X-Men mixed together in the most awesome story of characters filled with powers. It is the best combination I have seen to date.
Espers were created by an experiment gone wrong much like the particle accelerator in The Flash that gave Barry his powers. In the result Espers were created, people displaying a varying spectrum of powers that emit an EMP. To protect these special people the Professor created a school to help these individuals control their powers. Among these people is the very charismatic and hilarious Nathan and his partner James who try to capture Espers who use their powers for bad instead of good. As the story progresses Nathan, James, and the Professor learn of a much darker force brewing and it is up to them to stop it.
This book is absolutely funny. Nathan is more than lovable and my favorite character in the whole book. Not to mention his power is very unique and downright awesome, but I’ll keep it a secret (sorry no spoilers). Nathan has a lot of heart and is caring under his carefree exterior. I loved all the cool mechanics of steampunk novels; flying airships and weapons the Professor created to stop other Espers from using their powers. I liked that you get multiple characters point of view as well so you can see what’s going on from every angle. Egan Brass is a great writer made following the story very easy to keep up with. I will read anything this man writes because I was blown away by this book. Its that amazing. Did I already say that?
Anyways, I loved this book. Can’t you tell. I promise you will not be disappointed. It is light but also very dark and mysterious and on more than one occasion I was creeped out. I never wanted this book to end. There’s plenty of action and displaying of powers that will have your eyebrows raising. When you think you have it all figured out, something happens that makes you think you know nothing at all. I highly recommend this book.
The scene begins with the Professor on the cusp of fame and fortune. He discusses electromagnetic energy with a group of his peers and how he was able to harness this energy and now is about to demonstrate it and make history. The machine explodes and people are affected by it and now manifest paranormal abilities. These people are called Espers.
Some are good and some are bad, really evil and gruesome.
Nathan and James are the good guys. They hunt villains in order to protect the innocent. They catch two of the evil ones in the middle of robbing a bank.
There is a criminal mastermind involved in the plot and plenty of scary accomplices and assassins to do his bidding.
All of the Espers are in danger and it is up to James, Nathan, and a few others to save the world.
This is the perfect book to read if you want to be frightened, grossed out, mesmerized, and find out whether the good guys win or lose the fight. Get your copy today!
