Grace Callaway knows how to write an engaging sexy historical. Her heroine, Polly, is feisty and smart, and Sinjin, the mysterious Earl she meets under rather shocking circumstances and of whom she gets quite an eyeful (oh-la-la!), is brooding and troubled. Hot and steamy action between them ensues. But don’t forget the mystery – because no Grace Callaway romance is complete without it. And what better way to get close than by hunting down a foe together?
A definite page turner!
escapism choice
I enjoyed the book. It was easy to read with a believable story.
I liked the family. They were supportive of each other and when the situation got more serious they reacted to help the Earl.
In contrast the Earl’s family were horrible although one had redeeming features.
4 1/2*STARS
From the moment Polly meets Sinjin the Earl of Revelstoke at a “retreat” the emotional bond is set.
Sinjin has problems with the blue and black devils. Suddenly he’s in serious trouble, but doesn’t remember what happened. Approaching Polly’s family of investigators for help gives him hope, but they can’t find proof. Polly is able to read his aura and convinces her family she sees Sinjin is telling the truth. If they won’t help him she will. Sparks between Polly and Sinjin sizzle on the pages from each sexual encounter to the next. Each one holds a secret. As their bond grows, so does love. To have a life together, they must find the monster behind the plan to destroy them. This is one rollercoaster ride. Explicit sex.
This is possibly my second favourite of the series.
Book 5 is about the youngest Kent sister, Polly. Despite her loving family, she is so lacking in self-worth that she hides her physical beauty behind dowdy dress. Her gift of reading others’ emotions feels more like a curse. Enter the King of Rakes, Sinjin, Earl of Revelstoke. Little does she realize his self-worth is even lower than hers – he just keeps it hidden better. From the beginning, Sinjin suffered from lack of love. He lost his mother at age 5 and his stepmother was anxious to be rid of him especially after she had her son, Theodore, Sinjin’s half-brother. The physical abuse he endured as a small boy both at home and school is appalling. Sinjin first comes to the Kent family to prove his sanity. He is estranged from his family and really without friend. If it were not for Polly’s gift of sensing auras I doubt if they ever would have come together. It was like having a natural lie detector. I understand why she kept it secret – just among her family – but she considers it a curse. The roller coaster ride of their relationship was thrilling and adventurous. I was truly surprised at the true villain. This book brings both the best and worst of human emotions – thankfully, the best – love – truly conquers all!
The “special abilities” felt out of place in the novel
