MickI was living the American dream. I had a beautiful wife and a career that I loved. Then everything I knew and loved was lost to me forever. With nothing left, I set out to lose myself in New York City. What I found, instead, was a best friend who would change my life forever. This is the story of how one person’s kindness set me on a journey that would change my life forever. This is not a … change my life forever.
This is not a romance; It is one man’s journey to find his way back to himself.

A strong story of a man that has lost so much in his life, now comes home from war and faces another one, but this one is called PTSD. This story can be gut retching, at times you cry for those that have lost so much, smile when he meets those that become his friends and cheer for every time he takes a step toward his future. I knew very little about what those with PTSD and how it effects them and those around them. But reading this book shows us a small peek into Mick’s life and how one friend can lead a person to start of something wonderful.
This is one I’d like to give more than five stars. Blew me away All the hurt that Mick had been through is a lot but with the help of a very special woman who has become his friend he might just make it
Inspiring! A fantastic uplifting story that speaks to the heart and soul. I enjoyed the characters and their story to over come their various struggles.
What a beautifully written story about a man’s journey to getting back to himself after experiencing so much loss in his life.
At the age of 13 Mick lost his parents and was sent to Louisiana to live with his aunt.
Not even a month after marrying the love of his life, she was killed while he was deployed.
Years later he’s now experiencing more PTSD after losing his best friend.
Moving to New York to try and find where he fits into the world, he instead finds an unlikely friend who has experienced her own troubles and loss.
One act of kindness has turned life around for Mick. He may have thought he just wanted to blend into the New York crowd, but she gives him a reason to try and work to make himself better.
PTSD has carried many names throughout history.
In our modern day it is commonly used to cover reactions to many forms of traumatic experience. Soldiers returning from service carry a different burden. I appreciate this respectful honouring of that.
Definitely a powerful read. A new to me author and I’ll be honest I dont read many Contemporary books. Now this isnt a romance so if its what your looking for this isn’t romantic in any way BUT a must read! We’ve all heard of the PTSD from the men and women who have served in our military. However, I do want to say it doesnt just affect them. Every walk of life can be traumatized in some drastic way so PTSD isnt just for soldiers. Anywho we meet Mick who is former Air Force and he served 6 tours before getting injured. He’s having a difficult time adjusting and finding his way. He’s a good guy. He meets a woman and they start off a very slow friendship. They both teach one another about moving on and not giving up. Raven has her own demons so she understands more than Mick realizes. He’s protective of her as she is of him. Its a great story.
PTSD is a serious thing. It comes in the form of triggers to that specified person. It could be a sound, smell, taste, or feel. Or even seeing something. It doesnt take much for that person to have anxiety. Anyways, I just wanted to say that little bit because my Dad has it. XOXO
5 out of 5 stars
What do you do when everything you love has been lost forever . Mick has been through a lot and now is trying to hide in New York City . Then one day on the bench he finds a best friend who would change his life in a way that noone would of ever thought. This isn’t a love story but a story of one man’s journey back from the brink and become himself again .
This story has such strong characters , Mick is truly a hero in my books , he has fought for so much . He is strong but he is also so scarred and broken , he has lost everything and everyone he loved. You just want to take care of him and wrap him up in a blanket and tell him that life will be ok. Pastor Clarence is another great character . He goes through a lot with Mick and becomes a good friend to him and encourages Mick to start doing things . Also another great character that starts Mick on his journey home is Dr Finley , he really helps Mick come to terms with what has happened and starts to put everything back to normal . They are both strong and kind characters that you will love .
We can’t forget Raven, the sweet woman who befriends Mick and shows him nothing but kindness . I love the relationship between Mick and Raven , its is so sweet . They seem to be more then friends that there is a true love between them that will not be destroyed in any way .
This book is so powerful, its shows what love can do to help bring a person well lets say back to life . The characters are so well written and complex and you will love them . The story is so relevant in todays world . So many veterans suffering in silence and those who are there to help . The author tackles this story in such a way that you care for the characters and want the best for them . The author has a way of letting us inside MIcks head and we get to see what he is really going through . This is an emotional book that will have you wiping a tear or two from your eyes and also you will be cheering for our main character through out the whole book . So if you want a powerful book for your summer reading challenge add this one to your list .
A beautiful portrayal of the human spirit. Mick has lost so many loved ones, suffering from PTSD he decides to move to NYC and “get lost”. What he finds in the city that never sleeps is the kindness of strangers-the beautiful Raven who befriends him, the Pastor who shares cookies and words of wisdom with him and Dr. Finley who challenges him to face his fears. Through the use of these brilliantly depicted characters Mick goes through the process of healing and getting a second chance at life. Although a relatively short story and a definite quick read it is powerful, emotional, empathic and hopeful. Highly recommend read- although may be difficult for some.
