I give this book a 3.75. It is a modern day telling of the fairy tale snow white if she started out in an insane asylum and the seven dwarfs are physic meds. A young girl struggles with her own reality and ends up some in a twisted fairy tale land to save the boy she loves. There are a few good twists and fun characters. A fun, fast read.
Huh. I really, really, really wanted to like this book. I love the genre and have liked Paige’s other books I’ve tried, but I just couldn’t do it. It felt like there were two or three separate ideas going on and they were mashed together to make a book. The flow from one scene to another wasn’t there, just jumps to a whole different kind of story from one chapter to another. And you want to talk about love interests? Have one, two, three! Geeze, make up your mind, girl!
Stealing Snow is a retelling of the fairy tale about the Snow Queen from her point of view.
Snow have spent her life at the Whittaker Institute, a mental hospital in upstate New York. She know that she doesn’t belong there. A mysterious stranger one day gonna pull her friend into a mirror and will dream of a stange tree.
She will go try to find her friend, and she will find herself into Algid, her real home. Where witches are pretty much real. Snow will learn she’s a princess and that she also have power over snow. But the throne she supposed to inherit, belong to her father who is more ruthless than she could have imagined. She’s gonna have choice to made.
I have find the story really interesting. Weird a bit about the not love triangle, but square. Three love interest for Snow.
One of my favorite books I’ve ever read. What you would expect in a young adult romance, but better. More love, more hate, and a kingdom ready to be whole again. Ready to be raised right again. I love this book so much.
Well, it’s been a ride of this story. This is my first book by Danielle Paige, I haven’t read Dorothy Must Die yet but I’ve heard good things about it and Danielle Paige as an author. So I had really high hopes for this story I hadn’t heard much other than it was meant to be a retelling of The Snow Queen. So I didn’t go into it knowing much.
At first, I felt like sometimes the writing was very awkward like some of the sentences felt very awkward to me which was a shame but as I went further and further into the story I managed to ignore that and carry on reading it. So I got over that soon. One thing at the beginning I felt like there was slight info dumping from Snow telling us backstory and although we need to know this I feel like there should have been a better way to tell this information that we needed to know.
A few times in the story it was hard to tell when the story switched from present to the past, I wish there was a way we could see this better because sometimes I was like hmm and then had to re-read the bit again to make sure I know whether it was past or present. The Memory scenes were very nice in this story and I did love them.
Snow doesn’t feel like she is 17 right at the beginning of the story I don’t know whether this is because she has been in a hospital that she hasn’t really experienced the outside world so she doesn’t seem 17. When we get further into the story she then begins to act her age she has to do a lot of growing in such a short time. Snow seems so selfish in this book some of her actions was questionable and sometimes I just wanted to punch her, like no lie I wanted to shout and hit her. Like ugh, she just ugh. Also, she kissed 2 different boys whilst looking for the love of her life Bale, erm why kiss 2 other boys snow?! That really annoyed me like on my goodreads status I have in caps like why won’t she stop kissing people?! I feel like her powers came to her easy although control did not so I suppose that would balance it out.
Bale, we don’t get too see much of him which makes me sad, and then something else makes me sad. Can’t say what, though. I did not expect what happened but from what we do see of him and from Snow’s memories I loved him I was really routeing for them to get together and then that thing happened. I can’t talk about it anymore it hurts.
Jagger is a thief who lures Snow back home and he kisses her a few times I didn’t like him the way he lied sometimes and just felt like Snow didn’t need the full information even though they expected her to kill the King. So he annoyed me slightly I was slowly warming up to him and then the end happened and I don’t like him again.
Kai is also another person Snow kissed, like for her wanting to save Bale she kissed Kai a lot. Kai was a character I half liked he kept it real in terms of the witches and magic coming at a price and owing people. I felt like he was one of the few people who was honest and true to Snow. So I really liked Kai.
In the end, I only really liked 2 characters the most like there was no instant dislike or hatred for the characters like all the others and that was Vern who was her nurse at the hospital that took care of her and who she escaped from. I really liked Vern and how she treated Snow. Also Gerde oh my I loved her character and I really want to know what happens to her! We don’t get to discover what happens to her I loved how she helped Snow and I just fell in love with her.
The King is an Ass.
Her mother Ora is an Ass. I don’t want to talk about this! I just don’t! Let’s just say through the story I was like why his her mum a shit head? And something happens when Snow discovers this other world and the truth that answers that question. I can’t say anymore because SPOILERS
Mystery character big plot line but can’t tell you because SPOILER so I’m not going to. Erm, let’s just say WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW Didn’t see it coming. Haha, I bet people reading this are like please tell me. Honestly, read it.
Why was there no girl friendships? Erm I really don’t understand this Snow had no girlfriends not even the thieves could be called friends so for me that is really disappointing this series would have been perfect for an awesome girl sidekick and there just wasn’t. So that was very disappointing.
Also, why were all the boys why did it matter how they looked? What did that really have to do with anything? Oh, he’s hot so I’m going to trust him so like no. Why did the looks matter so much? They shouldn’t have another thing that really annoyed me.
There was a bit of world building but not much all I got from the fantasy island was that there are a few villages somewhere they are all dead, it’s covered in snow it has been for 15 years. There is a load of trees and all animals are snow something. I know this is a series so I am really hoping that the world building gets better in the next book because if not I will be so sad.
I feel betrayed. Like the ending of this story it ended on such a cliffhanger and I feel betrayed by everything I thought I know but I really liked it. The ending saved this book for me, if not for the ending it would have gotten a lower rating than I gave it.
I really enjoyed this book. I am looking forward to the rest of the series
Interesting take but felt incomplete.
This books was an interesting read. I was hooked from the first chapter and couldn’t wait to learn more about the characters.
In this twisted version of Snow White, Snow has spent most of her life in an insane asylum. Her seven dwarfs are the pills she has to take there, named for the effect they have on her. The asylum might not be the only world out there for her, though.
I loved this book. It was twisted with great characters and plenty of action. I’m looking forward to reading more by this author.
