I read this before the new title. I loved the whole series. I enjoy all this authors books, and I think I have read them all.
Brette learns devastating news. She handles it well only because of her strong bond with the other Culpeppers. The ladies are smashing, daring and strong in their faith with each other. Nothing comes between them. Now it’s Brettes turn for love and Alex Hawksworth has his work cut out for him. He doesn’t give up on Brette while she figures her way through the chaos but stands firm and is faithful…It is a classic HEA which is well deserved….Brette certainly has earned this happy ending.
Great book! Great series!
This is the story of Brette, Brooke’s sister, and Alexander Hawksworth, Unlike the first two books, there is an immediate attraction between them. Alex entered the church out of duty not desire. His cousin is the Earl of Wycombe who has run through his wife’s dowry with his drinking and gambling instead of caring for those who are dependent upon him. Alex ‘s friendship with both Brooke’s and Blythe’s husbands goes back years and ensures him a place in society along with his handsome looks. Brette receives astonishing news – she is not a younger daughter of Brooke’s parents, but Brooke’s mother’s niece – her sister’s daughter with the younger son of Duke. When that gossip gets out, she is shunned by many. Added to the insult, the attorney does not think her parents ever married. Alex cares nothing of her background and offers to marry her. But Brette refuses him, not wanting him given society’s boot as well. All this came about when her father died and left a will and all to Brette. She asks the attorney to keep checking for proof of a marriage. But the unexpected happens – Alex’s cousin and young son die in a fire and he inherits a bankrupt earldom. Added to the drama, his grandmother forbids his association with Brette and is instrumental in spreading gossip. The confrontation between grandson and grandmother is priceless! To make matters worse, the current Duke, Brette’s uncle, is determined to marry her off to a 70 year old debauched Marquis after he is appointed her guardian. Here comes the rescue party – Heath, Tristan and Alex! Very entertaining and fun story with heartwarming moments and moments of man’s worst qualities – greed, selfishness, indifference, jealousy. But it shows love not only between Brette and Alex, but the love and devotion that makes a family regardless of blood.
Brette and Alexander are two kind people. They love each other but both think they are not good enough for each other. Some unexpected circumstances happen which mire the waters even more. Though fate has other ideas and their love will prevail.
An impoverished minister, Alex loves Brette, but marriage isn’t possible with the difference in social station. Alex’s circumstances change when he inherits a title, but is shadowed by the accusation of murdering his cousin and his son for the title. Then Brette’s life takes a turn and everything changes again. Will these two ever get together? I loved Alex and Brette’s sense of humor, the ending came a little quicker than I was expecting, but I enjoyed the read.
I have absolutely adored this series so far. I love the humor and the quips. The plots are well thought out and the historic tidbits add to the depth. They are just great.
Sweet Romantic Regency.. I just finished the story of Alex and Brette. Sweet and romantic.
The title of this book seems unrelated to the actual book. I did, however, enjoy the book very much. This is the third in a series and I plan to read the remaining two.
I actually rate “The Lord and the Wallflower” (nook version) as 4-1/2 stars. Although I very much enjoyed the story, at times it was a bit sappy. I most definitely liked the fact that both Alex and Brette were optimistic and forgiving. Forgiving, that is, except to those who were undeserving. Collette Cameron is a wonderful writer.
4 stars
I purchased copy of The Culpepper Misses Series books 1-5: book 3 The Lord and the Wallflower by Collette Cameron and this review was given freely.
A twisted story of chivalry, unrequited love realized, snobbery, greed and drastic life changes. When Brette’s matchmaking goes awry and the secret of her parentage is disclosed, Reverend Alex Hawksworth proposes marriage but pride, arson and insecurity get in the way.
** 3.5 stars **
Out of three cousins I’ve read about I liked Brette the least. In the beginning she was made out to be a bit shallow know-it-all and drama queen. I didn’t expect that considering her aspirations later in the book. They didn’t coincide with the image portrayed in the beginning. I liked Alexander well enough even with his ill-thought proposals, he was a nice man that was spared the life of man of the cloth. The mystery of the earl and his heir’s deaths were not solved so that was a bit of a downer. Plus what irked me the most was the fact that the topic of Brette’s illegitimacy was discussed in such a place where servants could hear and with no taking any precautions thus making sure the rumor will be well spread. The whole situation smacked of made up drama. It didn’t feel like a natural occurrence.
I liked all the characters from previous books, the high society censure and how the family was dealing with it. The machinations and well placed barbs by young ladies kept me well entertained. The ending was a bit anticlimactic. It was just statement of facts as they happened, and this book had no steam at all. Just saying. I am curious about the twin sisters though. So we will see.
What could the Culpepper Misses get into now? With Collette Cameron’s witty sense of humor and the Culpepper’s penchant for getting into mishaps one can only imagine what troubles Brette finds. However, I wasn’t prepared for the bombshell that threatens everything Brette thought she knew.
I admired the strength and straight-forwardness with which Brette handles her situation; not so much the way she handles Alexander Hawksworth and their mutual feelings. But I do have to hand it to Alex, “Hawk”, in his determination to prove to Brette they belong together (and the way he handled his grandmother – BRAVO!).
Ms. Cameron continues to come up with delightful ways to torment her characters and grab her readers attention – keeping them glued to the story from start to finish.
