Everybody gets to be supermodel gorgeous. What could be wrong with that?
Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can’t wait. Not for her license — for turning pretty. In Tally’s world, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. … really great time. In just a few weeks Tally will be there.
But Tally’s new friend Shay isn’t sure she wants to be pretty. She’d rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world — and it isn’t very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever.

Definitely need to read the next book of the series. This book has great messages and is very interesting.
This book changed how I look at dystopia’s.
I recommend this whole series
This series is the reason I got into reading as a young kid. I was hooked on Scott’s writing style early on, and fell in love with our main lead and her growth through all three books. I love how much Tally changes during this book, which hints at the changes she’ll go through in the other two main-series novels. (Extras doesn’t count.) I …
The funny part about this book is it starts off with one of the funniest first sentences I’ve ever read.
“The sky was the color of cat vomit.”
Ha! I love it!
Happy reading!
First dystopian novel/series I ever read and I have been hooked ever since. Read this book for school and could not wait for the rest of the books. Wonderful series, highly recommend.
This was a cool book! A fun and original concept, where society equals out the appearance of everyone who turns 16–making them all beautiful by surgery. Nice twist at the end; I didn’t see that coming. 🙂 Nice action after the traveling. This book says some really important things about perceptions of beauty and identity.
I am a big fan of dystopian novels and this one was no disappointment. In this society beauty is valued more than anything else, but the deeper we get into the story, the more we suspect and come to find out that it’s way worse than that. It really makes you sit and ponder how much value even our own society places on being beautiful, or thin, or …
LOVED it!!! couldn’t put it down or wait to read the next one in the series!!! VERY VERY GOOD READ!!!!
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld is a truly amazing piece that I recommend reading. Uglies will keep readers on the edge of their seats as they follow the story of a girl who though she understood her society, before everything changes. Although the start can be slow, it is afterwards very engaging and interesting with the plot twists and alliances …
