Demons are real even if you can’t see them. But what if you could?Zoe thought the loss of her parents would be the most difficult thing she’d ever have to endure. When she began seeing things she couldn’t explain in her new home of Torchcreek, Virginia, she was sure the grief was driving her mad. Instead Zoe discovers she is part of an ancient bloodline, one destined to defeat the powers of … defeat the powers of darkness from condemning the world. But Zoe, the daughter of the three, isn’t just another descendant–she’s the key to humanity’s salvation.
In this first installment of the Christian fantasy trilogy The Chronicle of the Three, Zoe Andrews learns that not all shadows are harmless interceptions of light. Some are a more sinister darkness that wants to torment the soul.
This tale of demon slayers is perfect for fans of Frank Peretti and Cassandra Clare.

For a long time, I stayed away from this novel. I remember reading a bad review somewhere that slammed the theology in it. Well, I happen to win it in a giveaway Tabitha was doing in celebration of the cover reveal for book two and…
I’m so glad that I did not stay in that place of NOT reading it because I seriously enjoyed this story!
The sarcasm and snarkiness between Zoe and her Aunt is hilarious. One of the best parts of this story for sure. As a friend of mine mentioned while we read this book together, it has some amazing dialogue that is not only insightful and thought-provoking, but also brings a smile to your face.
One of the things I greatly appreciated was how the author wrote this story. All of the characters (well except maybe the guardian) were very relatable. Zoe makes references that if I were in her shoes at the same age, would be saying something similar. There is a real clash between her life at high school and her life as a demon slayer. It made it all so believable!
One thing I want to mention is that I had not expected to be hit so powerfully by Zoe’s compassion and a conversation between Daniel and Zoe about supporting one another. I was greatly encouraged and inspired to support those that are alongside me and those who are not. This line from Daniel sums it up perfectly: “We can’t always be there fighting side by side, but we can be there for each other” (pg. 70).
Overall, this is a great urban fantasy/paranormal read for YA readers that has very relatable characters and thought-provoking conversations. Really looking forward to book two!
Oh my gosh. This book was fantastic!
From the very beginning, I couldn’t put it down. I LOVED the book.
It starts with an uncertainty and then a tragedy. But soon, it turns into a young girl having to fight to save her town.
Zoe has just lost her parents, and her aunt Claire has become her guardian. She moves her to a different town to protect her from the memories of her past life, but what Claire doesn’t realize is that they’ve stepped right into the thing she was trying to protect her from.
Torchcreek isn’t at all what Zoe and Claire had hoped for, a quiet small town. There is something much more sinister lying just beneath the surface.
It all begins when Zoe sees a shadow plaguing a girl at her school, and once she defeats that, the truth is revealed. What happens next is the making of a fantastic novel that you can’t put down and don’t want to wait for the second book to arrive.
Absolutely stunning read! Tabitha Caplinger has a talent for bringing light into the darkness, and this is, by far, one of the best Christian books I’ve ever read. I liken this book to those of Frank Peretti. It really reminded me of his style, so if you like books along those lines, you’ll love this Christian fantasy novel!!
It’s a stark reminder that we’re all fighting a spiritual battle and that God will never leave us. We always have hope, and with God, we can win. We have the tools to win the war, even when it looks hopeless.
Favorite Quotes: (And I never do this in reviews, but I just loved it so much, I couldn’t stop from highlighting a few passages on my Kindle.)
“And it’s not her strength that is important. The Creator works best in our weakness.”
“Because that thing is working overtime to keep you scared and alone. If you were really worthless, it wouldn’t have to do that much.”
” ‘The Maker?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘But he’s not fighting with us.’ ‘No, he’s fighting for us in the battles that remain unseen.’ “
