17-year-old November Lonergan spent her whole life feeling like an outsider; like she was different. She was right. She’s a reaper like her mother; like her two cousins, Kai and Tristin. The supernatural world believes they are part of a prophecy to save them from an evil known as the Grove. Ember just wants to survive high school and fix the fallout from bringing back her friend. Old enemies are … enemies are lurking; waiting for their opportunity to strike but the pack has a new problem. A group of legendary hunters has resurfaced, threatening the reapers and anybody who stands with them. They are making good on their threats too; attacking those closest to the pack.
Their only hope of defeating the Legionaries involves trusting a stranger to perform a dangerous spell to advance Ember and her cousin’s powers. But Ember has a secret; a secret she can’t tell the pack. One that leaves the pack vulnerable.
An attack on pack allies, leaves one member of the group injured and another missing, along with a mysterious girl named Evangeline who may play a bigger part in this than any of them realize. As the Legionaries are closing in, the pack must trust their enemies, enter hostile territories, and play a dangerous game of cat and mouse with a psychopath. Their entire plan lynches on a dangerous bargain, but rescuing one member of the pack could mean losing another in their place…possibly forever.

A rollercoaster ride! Very emotional from nearly the first word. In this second Dead Things story, we’re along for the journey as told through Ember, Tristin, Kai and Mace. We begin pretty much where book one left off.
We are introduced to some new characters, and say goodbye to others. There’s also a great twist I didn’t see coming at all, and I usually figure things out pretty early on.
Really liked the beginning with the cast of characters, what/who they are in relation to one another. Could not give full stars, just too many errors that should’ve been caught in editing.

Pet Peeve: When Ember goes into the tattoo shop, and refers to a tattoo machine as a “tattoo gun”. In the tattoo community that term is not used, at least the artists and other tattooed people I know don’t.
4.5/5 Stars
The second book in the Dark Things series is even better than the first book!
The plot of the first book was outstanding, but this book surpasses that! There are so many little details that all add up in a big way at the end of this book. I am so impressed with the complexity of these details and how incredibly the author has woven them into this story. I am just so blown away. I can’t even imagine how even more intense the third book will be!
As with the first book, this book had alternating perspectives. I really love books that are written in this way. It adds so much more to the story when you see things from different points of view.
There was even more diversity in book two! Again, mad props to the author for so many diverse characters. It really is a breath of fresh air to read about couples that aren’t heterosexual, as most books tend to be.
The characters became even more complex in Dark Dreams and Dead Things. I liked the new characters that we introduced and woven into this compelling tale. We get to see new sides of some of the characters as well.
The pace in book two was perfect, just like the first book. I didn’t want to put it down!
In the first book there were a great number of spelling, grammar, and sentence structure errors that dominated the book. Book two still contained many of these errors, but I am glad to say that there are not as many as there was in the first book. Now, the copy of the book that I received was an ARC, so some of these errors may very well have been corrected in the final version. I thought that it was worth mentioning because I downloaded a kindle version of the first book days ago, and there were still an abundance of errors in it. This book also had a lot of dialogue, and not enough descriptive writing.
Dark Dreams and Dead Things was just an outstanding story! I am just itching for book three now! These characters stay with you long after you have finished reading. I recommend this book, I really do. The story will not disappoint you! If you are a paranormal or urban fantasy fan then READ. THIS. NOW!
Martina has done it again! I adore this family of supernatural orphans.
Amazingly, this book picks up right where the first in the series left off. The characters come alive. I loved them, rooted for them and my heart broke for them. There is so much life pack into this one book it’s almost a series in and of itself.
I have to say, I liked this book more than the first. BUT I will also add in order to understand it all the first book needs read first (it was still a great book!) No two characters are alike, and I love that! We get in the minds of the 4 main characters like we did in the first book. Tristin, Kai, Ember, and Mace. I just don’t even know what to say. Book hangover! Can’t wait for book 3!
Book 2 begins exactly where book 1 ended, which is nice because there isn’t any catching up to do between books. At this point, Ember and her twin cousins, Kai and Tristin, have learned that they need to work together in order to understand their powers and protect their family. Quinn’s soul is squatting in Mace’s body, and Mace is a soul without a home who quickly goes missing.
I don’t wanna give to much away.
I can definitely say I did love everything about this amazing book and if you’re into fantasy you’ll definitely like Dark Dreams and Dead Things by Martina McAtee.
*cover your ears now because I am screaming like a banshee! *
This. Is. Totally. Awesome! The Best Sequel ever!
The family of reapers and the pack of wolves are back. Ember Lonnergan must reconcile to the fact that her boyfriend’s soul was back but was somewhere else while her friend Quinn lives on boyfriend’s body.
Now, Mace’s past was catching up on him, haunting him, taunting, tormenting and torturing him. Ember and her twin cousins were now suspected to be descendants of the triple goddess, Morrigan, thus eliciting havoc and fear to the Grove. Legendary hunters appeared out of nowhere, and a new character threatened the pack to a much horrifying predicament.
Dark Dreams and Dead Things surely is much darker and more volatile while the story continues to flare up the heat and tension between the characters and the world building makes you feel like you are part of this extra-ordinary otherworldly realm. If I liked Ember in the first book, I think love her more now along with Mace and his horrendous past.
I agree with everyone who said that this sequel is definitely better than the first book. And I love, love, loved the first one, Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things and I distinctly remember saying that it was an instant winner and sure-fire hit for me. Reading book 2 just amplified my feelings for the Belladonna pack and now I’m like a raging bull all fired up and ready to strike. Martina McAtee had just increased my heart palpitations and now I’m clueless how to pacify my heart.
OKay, now I have to stop blabbering and continue reading the next book, Deranged Angels and Cannibal Hearts.. (Oh my, the title just gave me goosebumps! I wanna run!!!)
There are many things I love about this book, but I had a few disappointments as well. Without giving away spoilers I will just say certain things in the book happened way to easily for the characters. I still loved the story line and the characters. I like how certain things came to a resolution, and was shocked by a few surprises. There are certain things I just never saw coming. I have read these first two books several times now, and I am looking forward to seeing the third book!
