Ex-cop Kurt MacKinnon resents leaving his training stable to dive back into undercover work. He’s seen enough sordidness to last a lifetime. But when his former partner is murdered, Kurt ships his Thoroughbreds to the backwater track where his partner was last seen alive. He intends to make someone pay, even if the killer turns out to be a talented rider with a smoking hot body and a disarming … smile.
Julie West is chasing a big win, struggling to boost her reputation and propel her into the elite jockey ranks. There’s no time for love, but she’d have to be blind and maybe dead not to notice the magnetic new trainer in town. With her talent for handling problem horses, she agrees to work for MacKinnon, never suspecting she’s already a person of interest — and it’s not because of her riding skills.
Kurt never expected his contrary colt to flourish under Julie’s feminine touch nor for his own cynical heart to soften. But when his investigation tightens around the truth, his deceit thrusts them squarely into the killing field.

Good read, love story and who done it. Characters are interesting.
I just loved it – the 2nd time around! I just read it again, and all the while I thought, some of these scenes sound familiar. I checked my library and found that I had read it when it first came out in2011. I can highly recommend it, and books from Bev Pettersen in particular – that is, if you like horses. She writes where you really cannmot put …
An engrossing detective story intertwined with a look at horse racing and jockeys with a non-traditional love story. Very well written. I didn’t want to put it down.
I love all her books about horses and racing being a ‘horse person’ myself – even though retired.
I loved this book! It is a new type of romantic suspense story for me and it was about horses so that clenched the read for me! Lots of intrigue and suspense. A real nice love story and some very informative info about horse racing! It really is a great read and I highly recommend it!
Loved this book! I want to read them all!
Reminiscent of Dick Francis with a modern twist! Wonderful!
What a wonderful story. I really enjoyed every aspect, the storyline, character development, the insights into the racing community. It’s not often that you read a new (to you) author for the first time and wish you had found them sooner. But this book gives proof to the old adage that you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find the prince. And …
The horse racing lingo was unknown to me and made it a bit frustrating to read this book. Also, the weak and not-too-bright heroine who repeatedly went back for more lies and rude and mean treatment from the hero was difficult to take. I finished this book but regret doing so.
A great story, and wonderful characters. Of course no one wants anything to happen to the horses either. Kept me wondering what would happen next.
On the positive side, there was a good deal of interesting detail about horse training that made the book richer and more informative as a side bonus. The characters were polarizing, however. The male hero was arrogant, the female heroine naive and portrayed as much younger than she was; the sex scenes were downright uncomfortable to read. It …
Great story line; suspense-filled; great characters. Another Bev Pettersen novel not to miss reading!!
