“A fast, punchy story with a colorful fictional world for sequels to explore.” Kirkus Reviews
Nick Geary, jaded clan leader of human guardians, the Keepers, is doomed to love a human woman who’s forgotten him, time after time, for thirteen years: Libby Klink, a skittish accountant who’s as terrified of her recent and strange intuitions as she is of her mundane existence. When Nick is ordered … terrified of her recent and strange intuitions as she is of her mundane existence.
When Nick is ordered by the clan’s guiding force to seek Libby’s help in defending the clan against enemy Betrayers, romance sizzles as the pair forms an unlikely alliance in their desperate search to discover the key to the clan’s salvation–which Libby alone holds.
But a haunting secret could cost Nick everything, and in a race against time, both will be forced to choose between their hearts and duty. Can their love, and the clan, survive, or will the very forces that drew them together ultimately destroy them?
The story starts off with Libby wanting more from life. She’s living a dull existence and her anxiety prevents her from making any moves to change. However, a bunch of traffic and a hot stranger shake things up for good. She finds out about an entire existence of people and learns that she is much more than meets the eye. With newfound hope and a new lease on life, she finds herself with great purpose and a chance at a love of a lifetime.
Nick and his clan are Keepers, who protect humans and live off of positive energy. After a brutal rebellion in the past, they live to protect humans from people called the Betrayers, who draw energy from negative emotions and activity. When the leader of the Betrayers finds a way to not only draw greater energy but to also drain the energy from a Keeper, the good guys are in for the fight of their lives – and Libby is caught right in the middle of it.
The author did an amazing job of coloring in this world and building the characters in such a way that I found myself invested in this story. Obviously I wanted the good guys to win, but I found myself distracted by the romance that was growing between Nick and Libby. I loved how their connection existed for so long, without her being aware of it. This story may just have you second guessing whether or not you’ve met a Keeper of your own. They’re like guardian angels that you don’t remember and I like the idea of a whole clan of people out there with the determination and will to keep us safe. I’m a little heartbroken over a character named Dev and I’m hoping to see this guy in the books to come.
If you enjoy a story of love, family, and magical mystery, you’ll love this one!
I found this book to be really fast paced. That also may be one reason why I gave it a three rating. I feel that it could have had more in between. However it was very original, I found that no matter what I could not put it down.
I ha e not read anything like it, a cross between Angel’s and ghosts is the closest thing I can compare. The relationship between Libby and Nick is perfect, causing the best happy endings. Forgiveness and betrayal side by side.
You know what I am changing it to a four star, even though I think it was almost a rushed version of the book I loved it and want to read book two. So yup I say read this series.
I received this book free for an honest review and I am really glad I requested this book to put it simply I completely loved it and I completely felt for all the characters. This book while having many elements is basically good versus evil. The twists and turns had me continually guessing on what was going to happen next. I really enjoyed the explanations that were going on throughout the entire book it was written so well and it was really easy to understand what had been going previously. I loved the dynamics that took place between the lead characters I completely fell in love with Nick and Libby and the situations they were put in. If you want to read something different that is completely unique then give this book a try it is truly amazing.
5 Cranky Stars
Well written and a “I can’t put it down” type of story. The Keepers live all over the country and keep humans safe from the Betrayers and the mayhem they spread. The Watchers live in another realm, an alternate dimension and keep track of what is happening. They send “compulsions” to the Keepers, telling them where they are needed next.
Libby is just an average human going to work everyday and hating every minute of her job. Today is even worse. She is late and caught in a traffic jam. She lost her mother when she was 10 and can’t stand being confined in tight spaces. Her anxiety mounts as the traffic just sits. Suddenly a good-looking guy comes walking towards her car. He tells her to roll down her window. Frightened at first, she complies, and her world is rocked to its core.
Nick introduces her to a new world. She is part Keeper and the magic manifests differently in her. She is terrified at first but soon accepts this new life. Afterall, she has Nick to get her through. The Betrayers are slowly draining away the magic that keeps the Watcher Realm alive. They have found a way to drain the Keeper network and the Keepers themselves. The Watchers send out one last compulsion telling the Keepers to keep Libby safe as she holds a key to everyone’s survival. If she can control her anxiety, she might be able to save them all.
