When human bones are discovered in an animal shelter cremation oven Al Quinn, retired detective, gets called to the scene. Before he leaves he adopts Tanner, a dog that only had two days left before being euthanized. Before the day is done, Al realizes that Tanner, and this case, are nothing like they seem on the surface.
I started reading this series before I started watching NCIS (I had to wait until it finally came to Netflix), but now I realize that Al is a lot like Gibbs. Badass, older, hot guys with a stubborn streak who have a penchant for getting to the truth and can usually take care of themselves and those around them. No wonder I love them both so much!
With mystery, danger, action, great characters, motley crew, and Tanner the awesome dog what’s not to love about this book? Not much. The only sour note I have is Cam’s attitude at the end. It was really hard to swallow after her behavior the entire book. So…other than that, I love, love, love this addition to the Al Quinn series!
This was an easy read that kept my attention throughout. Nice, eclectic mix of characters…just needed a bit more of the dog Tanner!! 🙂
Plot line moved along relatively nicely… I liked the characters (especially Tanner and Teddy), storyline and setting. I now need to read the first two books in the series – Even though this is book #3 in the series and is the first one that I have read, the book is able to stand on its own.
I really liked the main character. I read all 3 books in the series. The retired cop and his unusual entourage of friends makes a great story. Each book had me captivated in the first paragraph. Russ Hall knows how to write a book.
This was my first book in the series. I chose it b/c there was a dog in the story. I liked how the main character found/chose the dog and the bond that developed. The main character is a retired sheriff who is called back to service. He lives with his brother and 2 women. That part of the book kind of turned me off. There are murders and he’s trying to find the killers. I like the coroner and his helper. The gal helper is unique in that she is autistic but is great at her job. The book is easy reading, unpredictable, and entertaining.
I really enjoyed the book and getting to know the characters. I hope there are sequels written.
I I
good read. Different story lines nicely intertwined.
The writer knows Texas
Being a dog lover, I was glad that it was people who were getting
fried instead of dogs. :<)
Very enjoyable read. Well written and keeps moving along quite well, drawing the reader along with it.
Great book. Hope to read more by this author
Even though the dog only has a small role in this book, his presence caught my attention and helped establish the protagonist as someone I liked. On one level this book was just a crime story, but the characters are not traditional and their efforts to solve the crime run from hilarious to dangerous. Lots of respect for differences in this book.
Enjoyed this book and bought the next one. Fun read.
This book was “okay”… certainly not a great read, but entertaining and a pleasant way to pass the time. If you can find it at a discount price it is worth reading.
Texas books are always good fun read
