Something alien is stalking residents of Lakehaven, New Jersey. It can’t see them, hear them, or touch them, but it knows them — their fears, their insecurities, and their secrets. It knows how to destroy them from the inside out. And it won’t stop until each of them is dead. Dave Kohlar has never felt like he was good for anything. But when his sanity, his life, and the safety of his only family … family and friends is in danger, he has to look inside himself for a strength that his otherwordly enemy can’t touch — strength that can hopefully save them all.

Mary SanGiovanni is the current torchbearer on cosmic horror in my opinion. Too many authors achieve the “unfathomable” as they play with this subgenre of horror, but they forget the horror. She delivers the kind of unnerving terror in this book and in this whole trilogy that makes you understand how looking into it would make you go mad. She understands the terror of the unknown closing in on you and crawling inside you. This book is masterful horror. You can’t go wrong with any of her work.
This was a really great story! It kept me going with a lot of the different characters and their reactions to the madness unfolding around them. Highly recommend to anyone who’s a fan of Slenderman, as this book predates that whole craze!
The Hollower is a bone-chilling debut from bestselling author Mary SanGiovanni, a writer who should be recognized the “Queen of Horror!” If Stephen King is the King of Horror, any female author who could write a supernatural gem like this should be definitely be considered masterful enough in her field to be recognized as the Queen of her field! Something terrifying is preying on the residents of a small town, turning their most nightmarish fears into deadly reality. Dave Kohlar, a man racked with guilt, doubt, and concerns about his sister, who is locked away in a mental hospital, is the perfect prey. Soon, he and a handful of other desperate survivors will find themselves locked in a hellish battle for survival against the Hollower, the demon behind all of the horror that has been plaguing the town. When I first read The Hollower as a Leisure paperback, I had no clue that it was part of a trilogy, but I am eagerly awaiting the chance to read the sequels because this eerie tale of terror was well-worth the read!
