This was truly wonderful. I’m not usually a fan of short-story collections, but this was so good. Charlie Cochet gives us lots of glimpses into Destructive Delta’s private and work life, with lots of funny and hilarious moments and lots of emotional ones too. First dates and first meetings, work shenanigans and crisis, emotional and romantic moments between the couples.
Quite a few of the stories are set in the past and let me tell you, the ones from Tony’s point of view, before and after Gina and John’s death, absolutely broke me. I cried. A lot.
This is a must read for THIRDS fans. Truly lovely and wonderful.
400+ pages of THIRDS short stories? Yes, please! This is fan service at its finest. Thank you, Charlie, for spoiling us readers with so many fun snippets of Dex and crew. Some of the stories are heavy, but they add so much to the THIRDS universe and it’s characters. But you’ll mostly laugh your butt off. All the banter, Charlie Cochet style!
For all THIRDS lovers, you have to read this. Do NOT read if you’ve never read the series; spoilers and confusion abound.
So many of these short stories were exactly what I needed to answer some questions and give more insight to moments that I needed more of in the series. Quite a few of the prompts were ones that I’d had in my mind as well so I appreciated that the prompts were included rather than just giving us a title and a short story. I had such a hard time with Sloane when I first “met” him and a few of these went a long way to soothing that frustration. But my favorites had everything to do with Dex and his dads. I skimmed through a few of the stories, but I absolutely devoured anything with John, Tony, and little Dex. There was a lot about this volume that added a fullness to the series that I was severely wanting.
This is a book of gathered flash fiction stories the author has written over the years based on fan prompts. They are gathered all together here and place in (mostly) chronological order which makes it great for historical information on the universe and gives further insight into the characters.
Couple of important points to start. You definitely need to have read the whole series before reading this book. Partly because there are some spoilers but mostly because you need to know all the players and their experiences in order to fully appreciate these stories. Secondly, this is not a spin off or alternate universe set of stories which for some odd reason seems to be some of the reaction I’ve seen. These stories just enhance and more fully develop the existing universe as we get more inside information about the characters. Additionally, we get history that was only vaguely referenced in the books which is the best part of this book.
Also, be sure to have some Kleenex handy because holy cow there’s some heart wrenching stuff here…Dex and his parents, Calvin and Hobbes’ first meeting. There’s also some humorous scenes as well…it’s not all a tear fest. Let me just say four words as an example: Dex, catnip, felid Therians!
I loved all the stories but the one of Calvin and Hobbs’ first meeting is the one sticking with me. So painful, so sweet.
Each of these stories is brief so it makes the book easy to read if, say, you’ve been cooped up with family members thanks to a certain virus and your normally peaceful reading time is not so peaceful any longer!!!
*I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my objective review *
Short, sweet and a whole lot of fun!
These were so much fun! I love when we have the opportunity to take sneak peeks into the world of characters that we love. Seeing the things that happened off the page and in other times that formed the characters into the ones from the books is a favorite of mine. So of course I loved these tales about our guys!
You definitely want to read the series first to avoid spoilers from the books. Really. Please, for your own benefit just hold onto this until you read the series first. I’m really looking forward to diving into book 2 of these shorts!
2020 edition review
A must read for every fan if the series! Not only did Charlie Cochet create amazing characters, bit she delivered so many stories Beyond what was revealed in the series! Some funny, some sweet, some a bit heartbreaking. Just a bundle of awesome!
THIRDS Beyond the Books Volume 1 by Charlie Cochet is an outstanding compliment to the Thirds series. These short stories are glimpses into the characters’ lives, perhaps enlightening us a bit on what a teenage Cael or a preschooler Dex were like (absolutely adorable, btw). What makes this even better is the fact that they are written to reader prompts for the THIRDS world and so its the stuff we readers really wanted to know… so remember it must be read after the series is complete. I found these tales to be a good combination/mix of sweet, fun, humorous, sexy…but one thing for sure they were all amazing.
