When the dust settles in this Texas town, who will be left standing? It’s been six weeks since Jack McBride’s life went to hell: the resolution of his first case as chief sparked a county-wide drug war, his brother Eddie rode into town with a pocket full of cocaine and trouble on his mind, his estranged wife returned from her one-year sabbatical determined to win him back, and Ellie Martin ended … Ellie Martin ended their brief affair.
To the Stillwater natives, the increase in local crime can be traced directly back to the day outsider McBride took the job, and they’re gunning to get rid of him. One particular group is led by Joe Doyle, a successful local businessman who’s running for city council against Ellie and her plan to revitalize downtown. Now Jack has discovered proof Doyle is the biggest crime lord in the county, and, with murders piling up and the drug war intensifying, Jack suspects the crimes aren’t business but personal–and he’s the target.
The bitter election and Jack’s investigation spark old rivalries and new jealousies, making Ellie and those who love Stillwater most wonder if it’s even worth saving.

Great series….couldn’t put them down.
Read an online review that suggested reading Stillwater first, so bought it and read it first. Totally makes sense to read in that order. I really enjoyed the development of the characters.
I enjoyed this book, it was interesting and had some twists and turns. It is the 2nd in a 2 book series. I wish the author would write a third so I can see what happens to the characters.
This was a fast pace set in East Texas. It was a great read.
I like the characters. The human drama is realistic & sucky. I love it.
Loved it! Melissa Lenhardt is a natural story teller. I didn’t realize it was the second book in a story, now I want to read the first book. Will there be a third with these characters? I just started Sawbones the first in a historical series by Lenhardt with great expectations.
I loved this book!
Pretty predictable. Characters were unremarkable.
The Fisher King is the second book in the series. I hadn’t read the first, so the several references to past events were annoying. It was a good story, but not exactly stand alone. Could have been with a few changes. I didn’t need to know of the history between the characters to enjoy the book.
Jack McBride is an ex-FBI agent that is the police chief in a small east Texas town run by the Doyle family. Jack thought small town life would be simple. Boy, was he wrong. His wife returns after being gone a year to find herself. His brother, Eddie, who is recently out of the pen and hanging with the Doyle family, is the bane of his existence. His 15 year old son, Ethan, has discovered girls. And, Ellie, the woman he had an affair with before his wife showed back up, is trying to ignore him. Welcome to small town America.
It’s a good story. I really like the characters I should, and dislike the ones I’m supposed to dislike. Drugs, corruption, politics: everyday small town life. Since Jack has become Police Chief six bodies have turned up. The town thinks none of this happened before he became chief, so it must be his fault. While trying to solve the rash of murders and get a grip on his personal life, Jack is doing the best he can with his wife, son, brother, ex-girlfriend. Lots of surprises. Some of the good guys aren’t so good and some of the bad guys aren’t so bad.
Fast moving and a page turner. Stayed up most of night to finish this one. Just ordered the other one in the series even though it will be out of order.
