I’m writing this review on September 30th, which means I’m all too aware that R.L. Stine wants to wish his fans a Happy Halloween—and for readers who love reading his older Goosebumps books, there’s no better way to do it than to read the classic chiller that warns us NOT to wear The Haunted Mask when we go trick-or-treating! Whether you’re a first-time reader or a fan looking for nostalgia in the form of a good, spooky story from a classic series, you’ll find Carly-Beth finding out the hard way just exactly why anyone would offer such a warning over the course of this terrifying tale. All she wanted was to stop being the brunt of every cruel prank because everyone claimed she was afraid of her own shadow. On Halloween, when she goes to a party store and sees some particularly creepy Halloween masks, her motivation for buying one truly frightening and hideous monster mask is simply to get back at all of the kids who have scared her over the years—especially Steve and Chuck, the two boys who have taken the most pleasure from it. But it could prove to be a terrifying mistake! At first, when she can’t take the mask off, it’s only a false alarm considering that, after a few minutes, she finds a simple solution for removing the mask. When she later has the same problem, the situation takes a chilling turn as Carly-Beth suddenly finds that, despite the best efforts of she and her friend, Sabrina, they are simply unable to remove the mask. Carly-Beth finds her Halloween turning into a real nightmare for a shockingly simple reason—the longer she wears the mask, the more monstrous she becomes… in personality, in voice, in every way imaginable! Returning to the store for help, she finds a horrific explanation. According to the store owner who had previously tried to stop her from buying the mask, it’s not an ordinary mask—it’s a living face that has been waiting for a new owner to wear it. It’s a good thing he has a possible solution for the terror because of the one fact Carly-Beth is all too aware of: The longer Carly-Beth wears the mask, the less human she becomes! R.L. Stine provides a spooktacular Halloween treat that all horror fans of any age will love with this fun and creepy nail-biter! For parents who want a great television series that kids who love scary stories are certain to love, I highly recommend the classic 90s television series based on this exciting book series. I’m glad that readers who enjoy Bookbub like leaving comments for reviewers who have reviewed any of the books that can be found here because I have a suggestion for fans of the series who would also like to watch the television series, whether you’re kids who have never seen it or long-time fans who would love to see it again as adults: If you’ll leave a comment for this review, I will provide a link to a website where you can watch it. I know some people have Netflix and some own episodes of the series on DVD. But fans who like the series and cannot afford Netflix, or simply do not like the app, will appreciate finding a website or app where you can watch the entire series for FREE!
