One hundred years ago in Port Arbello a pretty little girl began to scream. And struggle. And die. No one heard. No one saw. Just one man whose guilty heart burst in pain as he dashed himself to death in the sea. Now something peculiar is happening in Port Arbello. The children are disappearing, one by one. An evil history is repeating itself. And one strange, terrified child has ended her … silence with a scream that began a hundred years ago.

I read this book in high school, but since that was a few years ago now, I didn’t really remember it (meaning: how did this one end again?). I remembered the formula of Saul’s books: small town, incident happened 100 years ago, history repeats itself in modern times. Lather, rinse, repeat – but Saul does that well.
In this book, the Congers have …
This book was the beginning of my love affair with John Saul”s writing
Suffer the Children holds a very special place in my dark little heart because not only is it the first John Saul novel I ever read, but it’s one of the books that initially turned me on to horror.
And no one does horror like John Saul. His terrorific tales have the ability to make you forget that you’re safe in the natural world – and Suffer …
This was the first book I read of John Saul’s. I think this one is the best story he wrote and I’ve read pretty much all of them.
One of my first reads by John Saul.
I read this book years ago when I lived in America. At the time I found it chilling, because biblical sayings can be interpreted in completely different ways.
Good story. First read years ago and it’s among one of my favorites
I originally read this book about 20 years ago and it scared me. Then I got it on bookbub for a steal and decided to read it again. It had good characters and a good plot but the ending was anticlimactic. Being that I am older I guess my expectations were that it was going to be as scary.. it was still an okay read
It was an excellent book!
This book was pretty creepy. I wasn’t quite ready to read about children violently killing other children, but I managed to get through it. The story is about the Conger family who have lived in Port Arbello, a small town somewhere along the Atlantic Ocean, for centuries under a curse. The curse is based on a vague legend that even the present-day …
John Saul’s first book is quite a nightmare that is unkind to children, to say the least, so watch out when you crack open this book! Even though it’s one of my favorite horror novels, I am pretty much undecided on whether I’ll ever read it again because it’s a book that pays brutally close attention to the horrendous murders of young children. …
Wow. Just wow. What did I just read. Seriously.
In July of last year, I came across a complete paperback set of The Dark Tower series on Facebook Marketplace. I immediately went to pick it up and while chatting with the man (aka capitalbookreview on Instagram) we shared some books we’d read that were page turners. He asked if I’d read ‘Suffer the …
This book is chilling, heart-breaking, gruesome, and I couldn’t put it down. I don’t want to give anything away, but what these parents are willing to do for their children is horrifying. The parents in this book are willing to go to extreme lengths to keep their children alive. DiLouie’s writing is masterful and he makes the entire premise …
