“I’ve loved every one of Susanna’s books! She has bedrock research and a butterfly’s delicate touch with characters—sure recipe for historical fiction that sucks you in and won’t let go!”— DIANA GABALDON, #1 New York Times bestselling author of OutlanderThe invincible ninth Roman Legion marches from York to fight the Northern tribes, and then vanishes from the pages of history. When Verity Grey … from the pages of history. When Verity Grey goes looking for them, she may find more than she bargained for.
Archaeologist Verity Grey has been drawn to the dark legends of the Scottish Borderlands in search of the truth buried in a rocky field by the sea.
Her eccentric boss has spent his whole life searching for the resting place of the lost Ninth Roman Legion and is convinced he’s finally found it—not because of any scientific evidence, but because a local boy has “seen” a Roman soldier walking in the fields, a ghostly sentinel who guards the bodies of his long—dead comrades.
Here on the windswept shores, Verity may find the answer to one of the great unsolved mysteries of our time. Or she may uncover secrets someone buried for a reason.

Archaeology and Scottish is what I liked about this book.
This was the first of the authors book that I read and it sent me looking for more; I’ve read almost all of them, now, and not one was disappointing. It’s not quite fantasy but with a touch of the fantastic, not quite eerie but with a touch of the supernatural, not romance but with a touch … just a clean fresh breath of air – a beautiful …
This book is always a go-to when I need to read something great, even though I have read it numerous times. Every one of this authors books are wonderful and this one is no exception. Surprising ending, wonderful story telling, just an all around great read.
loved it.
This was the first Susanna Kearsley book I read, and I was so in awe of the author’s style and storytelling that I bought up the rest of her books. A haunting and fantastic read, THE SHADOWY HORSES is a book I highly recommend.
I loved it.
Not as good as Winter Sea. It didn’t give as much historical detail. Oodles of archaeological terms and processes, but not the historical references like Winter Sea and The Rose Garden.
Live Susana Kearsley.
