Twelve-year-old Niall Braewick and his two younger brothers [8-year-old Faelan, and 5-year-old Cullen] were rushed out of Castle Kincaid when the attack came. He watched as each brother was taken in a different direction than his own. Niall didn’t understand. The three clans were friendly and were having a gathering… a festival. What had happened? The chieftains were allies. Why would the once faithful vassal clans Alwyn and MacClaren suddenly betray the Kincaids?
“Just because something bears the aspect of the inevitable one should not, therefore, go along willingly with it.” –Philip K. Dick, The Transmigration of Timothy Archer
Seventeen years later, Faelan doesn’t remember much from that time. He received a head injury while a clansman died protecting him. A woman [former mistress to Laird Alwyn] found the injured child and gave him a new name… Magnus. When he had recovered, she took him to Alwyn and declared he was the laird’s bastard son. She was given a cottage and provisions to raise the child. Magnus was hated by his half-brother Hugh, the heir to Alwyn. However, he worked hard in the practice fields, rose in the ranks, and gained the respect of warriors and soldiers alike. Hugh’s first betrothal ended with the mysterious death of the young woman. Her younger sister Tara Iverach, who lived in the cloister at Dyncroft Priory, had turned twenty. As heir to her sister, she now had a tempting dowry. She was retrieved from the cloister and a rebellious Magnus decided to steal a kiss from his brother’s betrothed. That was all it took.
“Accomplishments don’t erase shame, hatred, cruelty, silence, ignorance, discrimination, low self-esteem or immorality. It covers it up, with a creative version of pride and ego. Only restitution, forgiving yourself and others, compassion, repentance and living with dignity will ever erase the past.” –Shannon L. Alder
The cliffhanger from book one was smoothly picked up with this new line. Many of the questions asked in the first book were answered within this story. There were still threads hanging but not in a frustrating way. The story ran smoothly and was very enjoyable. I loved the chemistry between our characters. I am looking forward to the third brother’s story and the conclusion to this amazing Scottish romance. I am curious for answers to the questions who, what, and especially why that set this monumental story in the first place.
Highland Warrior Series: Clan Kincaid
Book 1: The Beast of Clan Kincaid [Niall Braewick and Elspeth MacClaren]
Book 2: The Rebel of Clan Kincaid [Magnus/Faelan Braewick and Tara Iverach]
Book 3: The Warrior of Clan Kincaid
I loved reading Magnus and Tara’s story. She is betrothed to a monster of a man, and when she arrives at the castle, she is cloistered away to keep her safe. It doesn’t take long for her to meet and fall in love with Magnus however. This story contains some twists that I couldn’t have predicted, which kept it fun! It’s easy to gobble up these stories!
Lily S. Thomas – Author of the Ice Age Alphas series and Galactic Courtship series
This is the second book in Lily Blackwood’s Highland Warrior series. The series follows three brothers years after they were forced to flee their castle and clan during an attack that left their parents dead. All three are seeking revenge.
This book is about the second son, Magnus, who was raised in an enemy clan. He never understood why he didn’t quite belong there until he discovers he is one of the long lost sons of the Clan Kincaid. He keeps his new identity hidden while he tries to find out what sort of attack the Alwyn Clan is planning on the Kincaids. In the meantime, he finds himself intrigued by his half-brother, Hugh Alwyn’s, betrothed. Tara Iverach goes from being sequestered in a convent to being held prisoner in a castle tower, unwillingly engaged to Hugh. She wants nothing to do with the mean and drunken Hugh but she cannot fight her attraction for his half-brother, Magnus.
This is another great Highland Romance from Lily Blackwood.
I enjoyed reading this book. This is the 2nd book of a 3 book series.
Very good storyline details and characters that showed their emotions well through the writting.
The author leaves you hanging through most of the book before explaining what happened to Tara’s sister. I found myself hating Hugh until close to the end, and thought just a little maybe he wasn’t so bad, and that clearly he was mentally unstable. That does not excuse what he has done through the 1st and 2nd book, but it does explain some of the why of it.
I am happy what Magnus inherits and hope all goes smoothly for him and Tara.
I will say I wasn’t as hooked with some of the book as I was with the 1st, but I still found myself unable to just leave it alone, which is good, just wish I was a little more hooked in.
I will be reading the 3rd book and seeing what happens to the 3rd son Cullen.
