Medicine Men is the follow-on to Heart in the Right Place. Both books have made national bestseller lists and #1 on Amazon in Biography, Memoir, Science, and Medicine.
Medicine Men is an extraordinary collection of the most memorable moments from old-school rural physicians who each practiced medicine for more than 50 years in the Southern Appalachian Mountains.
It contains hilarious, heroic, … hilarious, heroic, and heartwarming true stories of miracle cures, ghost dogs, and much madcap medical mayhem.
Jourdan’s work is often compared to James Herriot and Bill Bryson. Her books are on hundreds of lists of best books of the year, funniest books, and best book club books.
Quotations in the book are rendered as they were spoken – in real-life Appalachian dialect.

Loved Carolyn Jordan’s first book “Heart In The Right Place”, and this sequel did not disappoint! Unlike “Heart” which focused only on her father’s practice, this volume contains the best stories from a group of country doctors who practice medicine in the poorest areas of Appalachia. Cute mini-stories and short chapters – was able to easily …
Having grown up in East Tennessee I related easily to the folks depicted in the stories. Also grew up hearing stories of my great grandfather who was a small town doctor in a small town in East Tennessee so these stories had the ring of familiarity that comes with a childhood spent in the area. Loved the witty yet kind depictions of the people.
This book took me back to my childhood. While listening to it I could clearly picture in my mind the doctor’s office my parents took us to. I loved that doctor. He was so kind. In hearing of the kinds of payments received I remembered one time we went in and there were a couple of live chickens in the waiting room. They were payment from another …
Loved this book!,
It is written by the daughter of a Doctor practicing in the backwoods of the Appalachian Mountains. In the book, she tells of the adventures her father had treating the “Mountain Folk’s” accidents and injuries. It’s is a hilarious look back at a kinder, gentler time.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is ready to laugh …
Wonderful, thoughtful book. Loved it and will pass it on to others. It was a good coffee two night read.
Wonderful book!
Fascinating!
I love vet and animal books but I couldn’t finish this one. So much griping about another employee, I just deleted it.

Doctoring in the “old days” (or semi-old days, since there were hospitals available, albeit not always nearby) in Appalachia. From what I know of Harlan County, some of those guys were much braver than I ever was. (It was called “Germany” since the mortality rate for outsiders approximated that of WW I according to a Kentucky urban doc I knew.) …
saved this book to my favorites so I can reread short episodes over and over
The dedication of the physicians is amazing. There are wonderful malapropisms from patients.
i could not believe how good this book is. Real life characters and situations told with love and witt and by someone who was there.
Just loved the book, it was just too short. I would enjoy a few hundred more pages, a truly delicious read.
A fun read. People are entertaining.
I thought it was a great read, one that brings back the feel and the flavor of an earlier, very different time
nonfiction, audiobook, medical, rural, short-stories
Comprised of numerous reminiscences from multiple country doctors preferring to practice in the backwoods of Appalachia from the 1920’s till fairly recently. With minimal alterations, the incidents could be backwoods NSW, Minnesota/Wisconsin, or Alberta. But then, I’ve been a nurse since the …
A fun read. The only thing wrong with it–not long enough!! I will be looking for her other books, now.
A fun book
A wonderful backward glimpse into another time and place when medicine was practiced by a different kind of doctor. A fascinating read with inserts of mangled medical vocabulary from patients.
