“Laura Kaye has a gift for writing beautifully damaged men and Caden Grayson leads the pack with enough vulnerability to twist your heart in knots.” ~ NYT Bestseller Tessa BaileyTwo strangers…When accountant Makenna James finds herself stranded in a pitch-black elevator, she can’t help but wonder about the stranger stuck with her. All she noticed about him before the lights went out was a … lights went out was a dragon tattoo; all she knows now is his sexy, gruff voice in the darkness.
Four hours…
Caden Grayson is inked, pierced, scarred on the inside and out—and terrified of the dark for reasons he’d rather not remember. Trapped in his worst nightmare, only the sweet voice of the red-headed beauty distracts him from his fear. And, oh, man, as the hours pass and the darkness heats up, that’s nothing compared to her touch.
One pitch-black elevator…
He’s all rough edges and she’s pin-striped skirts, but in the darkness they open up and reach out without any preconceptions to hold them back. But as attraction grows and sparks fly, will they feel the same when the lights come back on?
“A beautiful read with Kaye’s trademark sexiness and smart storytelling! Makenna and Caden are magic together–I loved this book!” ~ NYT Bestseller Jennifer Probst
The Hearts in Darkness Duet Continues with LOVE IN THE LIGHT!

Loved this book. Read in one day. Wished it was longer.
The story takes place over several hours. You love both characters from the start and just want to keep reading it. Sexy and emotional. Going to be placed as a favorite.
Can you imagine being stuck in the dark, in an elevator, with a complete stranger? What if they’re not a good person? What if they stink? Makenna and Caden were fortunate to be stuck with one other. They learned about each other with no preconceptions. No distractions. No worrying if the other person was attractive or if they found you attractive. No wondering if they said too much. They grew close, closer than most people, in the span of hours. Makenna knew more about Caden than she knew about most people in her life. Caden grew attached to Makenna in a way he couldn’t be to anyone else.
Caden couldn’t remember the last time he’d had such an easy conversation or the last time he’d laughed or even smiled so much.
I really enjoyed this story. I liked it so much, from beginning to end, that I don’t even feel it necessary to read the next book in this duet. I probably will because it will give me more of these characters and the future that they have together, but I don’t need to. This author captured such a unique experience in a wonderfully sweet way. I couldn’t help but be captivated by this story.
In the dark in the elevator.
Spending several hours in the dark brings two people together. A man with a lot of scars and a woman with a lot of compassion. A short read with a whirlwind romance.
This was an amazing read! I’ve read the original one years ago and loved this one so much more! This one has the added bonus scenes! 5 stars!!!
Makenna and Camden end up trapped in an elevator in darkness. Camden has no love for being trapped in the dark. The two end up being intimate in a stressful situation with no notion of how things will turn out. A short but packed with a punch story.

This wasn’t like xxx or anything, it was sexy though. Caden and Mckena meet in an elevator, the chemistry was perfect between them. The sparks flew. Caden definitely has a bad boy look, while she has a polished pit together look. Caden definitely has his issues, while they both have experienced loss. Their connection is fast, but it seems to be the norm in a lot of books. It was a quick read, that I enjoyed.
I absolutely love this story and the two lead characters! They’re so interesting and lovable and the chemistry between them is super hot. Caden just sounds delicious too! Mmm…
This is the first of Laura’s books I read and I’ve reread it several times! And I rarely do that. I just enjoyed these characters so much!
I have had this book on my kindle for years and I am so glad I finally got around to it. It’s a novella, so I was able to fly through it, but it still packed a punch. I loved Caden and Makenna.
I got this book via ku and am leaving my review voluntarily. This is part 1 of 2 books.
**Spoilers**
A solid 4 stars. It’s a quick read. Safe. Some sexy time.
Strangers Makenna and Caden meet in an elevator leaving her building where she works. Power goes out and they are trapped and in darkness. They begin talking and feel an instant connection.
I enjoyed the story. Looking forward to reading the follow up.
Who knew being trapped in an elevator could be so hot! I mean just look at the cover art. Her fingertips are literally digging into his back! Digging I tell ya!
Makenna is having a rough day, and simply wants to get home so she can relax. Don’t we all? Distracted by a phone call, she doesn’t really notice the tall, dark stranger sharing the elevator with her when the lights suddenly go out. Her elevator companion is Caden, a physically and perhaps emotionally scarred man who chooses to isolate himself from others through his tattoos and multiple piercings. However, considering he doesn’t do so well in confined spaces, and the young woman sharing this fateful elevator ride with him never got a real good look at his face, he has no choice but to open up to her.
Now, in the real world, Makenna probably would have been trapped with either a suspender-wearing heavy breather, or someone with terrible body odor, but we can dream, can’t we? Sure! Why the hell not? What I love about this story is the fact that our two love birds weren’t drawn to each other simply because they had rockin’ bodies. Being trapped in total darkness means they come to rely on and communicate with one another on a level that seems anything but superficial.
The build up to the smut in the book is slow, but in a sinfully delicious way. Idle chit-chat turns to deeper discussions about life, and as the elevator heats up with the loss of electricity, they can’t help but remove a few articles of clothing. Can you feel the tension?! Yummy. When these two finally decide to climb all over each other things get hot and sticky.
There is one reason, and one reason only that I wouldn’t give this book a perfect rating, and that is because I question how long this relationship would actually last. I mean, I absolutely love the characters, and they really seemed to connect, but they knew each other for about 5 hours, and met under somewhat unusual circumstances. Considering that the novel takes place over a few hours rather than a lengthy period of time, they don’t really have time to develop their feelings into something exceedingly substantial. By the time the novel ends I’m sure the characters are in more than lust, but I don’t think it can quite be characterized as love just yet. Can’t wait to see what happens next!
Well-written, sexy, erotic novella of two strangers, Caden Grayson and Mackenna James, who get stuck in an elevator and end up falling in love in spite of not being able to see each other. Despite it being short in length, I thought it was an awesome, romantic and hot story, loved the characters and the unique way they meet and get to know each other in a darkened elevator. Looking forward to reading the sequel. I’d definitely recommend this!
Makenna James doesn’t think her day could get any worse, until she finds herself stuck in an elevator with a complete stranger. Caden Grayson is amused by this beautiful redhead who looks like she is having a rough day. When the power fails, his worst fear comes true as they are both stuck in a dark enclosed space.
This was such a sweet and cute novella. I loved how Makenna and Caden met and fell for each other before ever actually seeing each other’s faces. The dark and intimate setting allowed them both to be their true selves, issues and all. Makenna met Caden’s issues head on and helped him through his claustrophobia. She made him feel whole even when he was struggling in the dark.
“His chest felt full and tight at the same time, but above it all he admired and appreciated the way Makenna met his issues head on—kissing his scar, comforting him about the loss of his family, making him feel so accepted by wanting to understand why he’d marked himself again and again.”
In 24 hours these two found their forever while stuck in a terrible situation. While most people would fall apart in a situation like this, me included, these two banded together and found happiness. I loved this one and I am so glad there is a second novella for these two because I need more!
Loved this story so much. Makenna and Caden are the true meaning of what a deep connection to each other is. There are conversations and getting to know each other in the dark. No preconceived notions of who or what the other is.
I’m kicking myself for waiting so long to read Hearts In Darkness. For such a quick story it had more emotion that some entire books. Caden was such a great combination of bad ass and vulnerable, and Makenna was so sweet and understanding. Fantastic!
