A scoundrel who lives in the shadows Jack Turner grew up in the darkness of London’s slums, born into a life of crime and willing to do anything to keep his belly full and his siblings safe. Now he uses the tricks and schemes of the underworld to help those who need the kind of assistance only a scoundrel can provide. His distrust of the nobility runs deep and his services do not extend to the … not extend to the gorgeous high-born soldier who personifies everything Jack will never be.
A soldier untarnished by vice
After the chaos of war, Oliver Rivington craves the safe predictability of a gentleman’s life-one that doesn’t include sparring with a ne’er-do-well who flouts the law at every turn. But Jack tempts Oliver like no other man has before. Soon his yearning for the unapologetic criminal is only matched by Jack’s pleasure in watching his genteel polish crumble every time they’re together.

A fantastic historical m/m cross-class romance.
I love historical romances set in the Regency period. However, this is my first strictly M/M historical romance. (Usually there’s a woman in the mix, and it’s called erotica). I wasn’t sure if it would be my cup of tea; but it had good reviews, so I decided to try it. And Cat Sebastian did a wonderful job in writing this story. She makes you forget you’re reading M/M romance. It’s just romance. Period. And a lovely one at that. There was a good mystery, likeable characters and hot sex; but it was the emotions that made it such a good romance. And yes, dammit, it made me cry!
One of the best M/M romances I’ve ever read. Tender and hot and compelling and sexy, all at the same time!
I just finished a reread and realized I hadn’t left a review here so I’m doing that now. I love Cat Sebastian and her MM historical romance. I stumbled upon this series, not realizing it was a series at all, and read it fully out of order, last to first. This being the first book in the series but the last I read, I somehow manage to read them in the same order when I’m rereading for comfort. There’s something about already knowing the characters got their happily ever after and working my way backwards that makes me smile. I love Jack, so rough around the edges he cuts. And the way Oliver smooths him and makes him a better man too. This whole series is just sweet and sexy snd full of emotions. That’s why I keep releasing them. Highly recommend
There is great chemistry between our heroes in The Soldier’s Scoundrel. My favorite was Oliver, who is trying to recuperate from war by finding order in English society. Jack Turner represents everything that is not orderly, and yet Oliver can’t stay away. Together, they investigate the case of missing letters, as well as try to protect Oliver’s sister from her abusive husband. I really liked this book’s take on how systems fail people and how men can relate to the patriarchy system. It was also fun to have mystery combined with romance.
Two men from opposite sides of the tracks; one raised in comfort and one raised hungry both find in each other an illegal love. I loved the interplay between Oliver and Jack. I absolutely hate that their love had to be kept secret. I didn’t know how the author was going to keep them together. This was a fascinating tale of love in old England. If you enjoy historical romance give this a shot. Does not disappoint.
Excellent in audiobook!
Never go wrong with one of Cat Sebastian’s M/M stories. Always a great go-to author. Fans of M/M historical romance will be happy with any of her books.
There are books that just catch me by surprise. Books that I don’t expect to fall instantly in love with, but by the time the first chapter is over, I’m head over heels. The Soldier’s Scoundrel is one such book. Both the cover art and book title are cheesy and heavily influenced by harlequin romances, which was the main reason why I hesitated to read this book even though it’s been almost three years since I bought it. Now I’m kicking myself for waiting so long.
The first thing that struck was the high quality of Cat Sebastian’s writing style. She is an author who not only has a talent for words and plots, but also is highly skilled at making the story come to life in a delightful manner. The characters were well developed and unique individuals. I fell in love with them immediately. The mystery was not what I was expecting, and the journey to solving it was incredibly enjoyable. I highly recommend this book and urge everyone to try it out.
I loved this book when I read it on release, and I loved it again when I listened to the audiobook narrated by Gary Furlong. All the feels and a satisfying HEA.
I don’t read/listen to a whole lot of “regency”, but I thoroughly enjoyed this. Not only Jack & Oliver’s interactions, but the mystery/suspense aspect as well.
Gary Furlong was new to me as a narrator and fantastic.
Can’t wait to listen to the next one.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved that neither hero was titled, and Jack was distinctly lower class. They had wonderful chemistry and worked so well as a team. I like the resolution to the mystery element as well because it was unexpected and revealed none of the characters to be stereotypes, how everyone’s perceptions were a touch off. I also really loved how realistic and workable the HEA still was. Totally an A+ in my book.
