After a turbulent childhood, the Morgan brothers went their separate ways, leaving the family cattle ranch and their cowboy days far behind. But now, one by one, they’re being called back home to California. Have they been summoned to save the land—or to start a new legacy? Chase Morgan high-tailed it away from ranching life as soon as possible. But running a successful technology … successful technology company can’t erase the memories, or secrets, of his youth. Coming home to help his Grandma Ruth may finally put some ghosts to rest—if he can just get a certain smart, beautiful houseguest out of his business. But getting her out of his head is proving even more difficult…
Determined to save the Morgan ranch, historian January Mitchell has pinned her hopes on the surprisingly rugged, surprisingly likable, and exasperatingly stubborn Chase. Surely his love of this breathtaking, mysterious land runs deep enough that he’ll once again embrace his inner cowboy. Or maybe, despite both of their skittish hearts, she’ll have to find a way to get him back in the saddle…any which way she can.

This is the first in the Morgan Ranch series, and what a way to introduce us to the brothers, ranch and series. In my opinion this was an excellent read. My first by Ms. Pearce and it won’t be the last. The characters were well developed and plot drew you in. Chase and January had excellent chemistry and were relatable and likeable. I did not want to put this book down. Will Chase and January get their well deserved happily ever after … read to find out! I can’t wait for the rest of the series to come out, I need to know what happens with the rest of the Morgan brothers and the ranch.
Another Kate Pearce story I thoroughly enjoyed.
There are so many twists and turns that just keep you hooked.
I would recommend this to anyone who likes billionaires and cowboys
No spoilers from me. Let’s just say if you are a fan of superb writing then this book is definitely for you.
Right off the bat, it was obvious Ruth was manipulating the situation. It didn’t take away from the storyline because throughout the book, you are getting hints of the details of the family situation.
I did like Chase and January. They had really good chemistry. As with any couple, they had a couple of those verbal communication issues. They also had a hot sexy relationship. I do wish that Chase had put Kevin firmly in his place, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kevin pop up in another book. The foundation for future Morgan family books has been firmly laid.
This was a good romance with touches of suspense and mystery. I also liked the family dynamic between Chase, Ruth, and Blue.
The book is not a quick read. I got a little more of the Morgan family history than I cared about, but I understood that some of it was necessary. The Reluctant Cowboy is a standalone book, and I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

I purchased a copy of the novel The Reluctant Cowboy: Morgan Ranch book 1 by Kate Pearce and this review is given freely.
This is the steamy rocky opposites attract romance involving high power technology businessman Chase and January the local history preservationist. After years of absence, Chase ,the oldest of four grandsons, leaves Silicon Valley, California and returns to the rundown Morgan Ranch at the request of his matchmaking grandmother. A family scandal, four brothers at odds, an interfering grandmother, a billionaire nerd cowboy, a plot to save the family ranch, and a romance with a little steam are seamlessly blended in this introduction to the Morgan saga.
The Morgan brothers were very close, until the fateful night that their mother and baby sister disappeared from the family cattle ranch and their father mentally checked out and became the town drunk. Cole being the oldest, at 12, was held responsible for their family disintegrating by his brothers. All the boys left as soon as they could, leaving their grandmother, Ruth, to carry on alone. Cole is now a successful, wealthy businessman owning a company with his two best college friends. His grandmother manipulates him to come home, where she wants all her boys to return and for Cole to meet January Mitchell, a historian working on her thesis, and helping Ruth try to save the ranch. Cole’s past keeps him from using his heart and instead relies solely on facts, which has him not only on the outs with his business partners but had landed him in the OR. His friends force him to take a long overdue vacation, so he comes thinking he will sell the ranch and move his grandmother closer to him. January is very wary of men, after the way her ex-husband has continue to try to sabotage her life. But their is a definite attraction between the two. The story is well written, moving at a steady pace until the surprise toward the end. The cover model actually looks like how Cole is described, though I really don’t see him as the type who would waste time shaving his chest. I recommend this book and look foward to reading the next one about Cole’s brother Blue. I also like the references to the old TV westerns that I watched as a child with my grandfather.
