This was a great read. Had you wondering what would come next. Truly enjoyable. I received a copy of this book from the author. The review is my honest opinion.
I learned a lot while reading this book. I had heard about the WASPS program but had never really understood what the women went through being test pilots. The dangers they were in on a daily basis. I loved this book and definitely recommend it to everyone.
I liked this book and learned a lot about WWII and the WASP program. A great wartime romance that seemed very realistic. I like historical fiction and enjoyed this book. I received this book from the author and all opinions are my own.
Taking place in the last few years of WWII, it shows the important roles women filled as the men were off at war. A romance between a Major, who believes a woman is to be protected and taken care of, not fly planes, and one such woman who wants to fly to help with the war effort, but most importantly for the freedom of doing something she loves. Both resisting the attraction and the feelings for each other. A good clean romance, but at times felt it dragging in details.

If you’ve ever wondered what women pilots did during WWII, this novel gives you a great picture of the role of the Women Air Force Service Pilot (WASP) program. A story with interesting details about planes and the ladies who flew them wrapped around a sweet romance between Mandy McCabe and Major Harvey Applegate.
The author transports us back to 1943 with just the right setting, complete with period songs and lingo. Mandy is a girl trying to overcome her humble beginnings and Harve, a widower with a handicapped son, is just trying to survive the war. There is an attraction there- but this is war time. Mandy muses…”She couldn’t get involved in her mission. Unfortunately, he was a dreamboat. And she had never met a man so full of heart and guts. As the old saying went, he was a man who knew how to die standing up.” And Harve can’t commit to Mandy when he might not come back from Europe.
As exciting events unfold, you will learn some history and cheer on Mandy and Harve as they navigate a perilous time.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. I was not required to give a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*
I truly enjoyed this book! The writing is so well done that the characters, the historical era and events were so vivid that I felt part of the story and kept rooting for the main characters to overcome their obstacles, not only professionally, but especially romantically!
Mandy Mc Cabe is a courageous pilot during WWII. Part of the Women Airforce Service Pilots, better known as the WASPs, her job is to test airplanes that have been damaged and repaired. Her work, and that of her women colleagues, puts them at great risk, but they are willing to anything for her country and fellow soldiers battling the war on the front lines and in the air. But when rumors about the program closing because of the risks, and it not being appropriate for women, get to them, Mandy’s friends convince her to befriend Corporal Applegate, who might be a key to influence the decision of the program’s fate.
Widowed Corporal Major Harvey Applegate has seen enough deaths, least of which his very own wife, so he’s determined that no more WASPs will be killed on his watch, even if it means putting the program to an end. Women are to be protected, not to be put at risk, even for an honorable cause as saving the country and its men. But meeting Pilot Mandy McCabe shakes his supposedly unwavering convictions. She’s strongminded, forthright and determined, and brave and selfless as all of the woman that serve their country this way. Worse of all, she starts to worm her way into his heart as she gets to interact with his son, who has special needs. And when his boss asks him to keep a close watch on her.
Can Mandy convince Harvey of the WASPs ability and right to keep doing their mission and help end the war? Is he willing to risk his heart to a woman who puts her life at risk, and relive his past fear all over again? Will he influence to end the WASPs program as he originally wanted or will Mandy change his mind? Will Mandy have to return back home and face her family with her struggling past? What will happen when he discovers Mandy was using him for her own personal purposes?
This book was captivating from page one! I was enraptured by the story, the complexity of the situation during the war, the bravery of all these pilots, men and women, and especially by the deep character development that made the story so relatable!
Mandy was admirable, yet flawed, stubborn, and opinionated. But she had a heart of gold. Harvey was a broken man, but with such an integrity, and also a very kind heart. I thought they were the perfect match!
The plot has action, lots of great dialogues as they both had strong opinions, a sweet clean romance, and an inspirational message about trusting God with your life, letting Him guide you in your decisions, and trust Him with your future! I loved the ending!
Definitely a book I highly recommend! Left me a positive impact and gave me insight about the important things in life!
It’s a story of faith, love and courage. Angel with steel wings was a good look at how the women of WWII aided the war effort as pilots. It’s also a look into the interaction of male/female interaction during war time on a military base. As one that has served in the Air Force I can relate to the story in a unique way. I like the love story it tells and how it shows the courage of those who fought and the worry of all who stayed behind. It’s a faith filled story of people striving and finding love and courage along the way.
I loved this book! I loved the characters! This was definitely about women of courage and them flying airplanes for the Air Force back in World War II. It romance also. It is a very very good book!!!
I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Really enjoyed this book set during WWII. In this Christian novel I learned alot about airplanes and how women helped shape WWII. Anne certainly must have done alot of research for this book, it’s now one of my favorites. Definitely recommend.
Angel with Steel Wings – This is my first read by this author and I enjoyed the story. While I expected more about the WASPs actually flying the planes in detail, this is mainly a love story. It was interesting about the planes, just not what I expected.
The love story and the war fought in England and Germany by the male pilots were interesting and made the pages go by rather quickly with a constant moving pace. The characters ran the gamut of personalities and experiences. The emotions felt by all the characters were realistic and true to the times. This story shows what the Greatest Generation experienced during this period in their lives.
The author’s vivid descriptions place the reader in the fabric of the story and weave a story full of truth about what was faced by all. God plays an important part in the story but He was back then everywhere in American life and the military always kept God in their hearts, needing His strength in times of survival and hope. There is good intrigue and suspense throughout the story and it was a pleasure to read a wholesome book. I found this book on Booksprout. 5*
