In a breathtaking blend of scientific intrigue and historical mystery, #1 New York Times bestselling mastermind James Rollins reveals an ancient threat hidden within the pages of the Bible, one that threatens the modern world in The Seventh Plague. If the biblical plagues of Egypt truly happened—could they happen again—on a global scale? Two years after vanishing into the Sudanese desert, the … after vanishing into the Sudanese desert, the leader of a British archeological expedition, Professor Harold McCabe, comes stumbling out of the sands, frantic and delirious, but he dies before he can tell his story. The mystery deepens when an autopsy uncovers a bizarre corruption: someone had begun to mummify the professor’s body—while he was still alive.
His strange remains are returned to London for further study, when alarming news arrives from Egypt. The medical team who had performed the man’s autopsy has fallen ill with an unknown disease, one that is quickly spreading throughout Cairo. Fearing the worst, a colleague of the professor reaches out to a longtime friend: Painter Crowe, the director of Sigma Force. The call is urgent, for Professor McCabe had vanished into the desert while searching for proof of the ten plagues of Moses. As the pandemic grows, a disturbing question arises.
Are those plagues starting again?
Before Director Crowe can investigate, a mysterious group of assassins leaves behind a fiery wake of destruction and death, erasing all evidence. With the professor’s body incinerated, his home firebombed, Sigma Force must turn to the archaeologist’s only daughter, Jane McCabe, for help. While sifting through what’s left of her father’s work, she discovers a puzzling connection tying the current threat to a shocking historical mystery, one involving the travels of Mark Twain, the genius of Nikola Tesla, and the adventures of famous explorer Henry Morgan Stanley.
To unravel a secret going back millennia, Director Crowe and Commander Grayson Pierce will be thrust to opposite sides of the globe. One will search for the truth, traveling from the plague-ridden streets of Cairo to a vast ancient tomb buried under the burning sands of the Sudan; the other will struggle to stop a mad genius locked within a remote Arctic engineering complex, risking the lives of all those he holds dear.
As the global crisis grows ever larger, Sigma Force will confront a threat born of the ancient past and made real by the latest science—a danger that will unleash a cascading series of plagues, culminating in a scourge that could kill all of the world’s children . . . decimating humankind forever.more
I love the way James Rollins connects history, famous people, Biblical stories, and myths with modern day technology and science. Plus, all his female characters have strong intelligent personalities and are well respected by their male co-workers. No other author has ever made me feel so curious as to spend a couple of hours online researching different places, people, and facts per book. I have learned a lot since I discovered the Sigma Force series.
I’m currently reading this. While it’s not my regular read, I have read a few of his books. His writing gets better with each book. I do love the way he weaves science and history into his adventures.
Up to his usual leap from the science stuff
British archeologist Harold McCabe travels to Sudan seeking proof of the ten Biblical plagues. Two years later, he stumbles out of the Sudanese desert, his body bizarrely changed, and dies. An autopsy shows his body had been partially mummified—while he was still alive. Worse, members of the medical team that performed the autopsy suddenly fall ill and begin to die.
Thus starts James Rollins’ latest entry in his Sigma Force series, The Seventh Plague.
When Sigma Force is brought in to investigate, a team of assassins begins to obliterate all evidence of the curse. Nevertheless, Sigma Force splits into two teams following clues that lead one team to the Arctic Circle to stop a lunatic’s plot to change the world, and the other to the deserts of the Sudan to follow McCabe’s trail.
The Seventh Plague is Rollins’ standard high-pitch action and suspense story telling. This book, however, has an incredibly wonderful scene with a herd of intelligent elephants that will stir the cockles of every animal lover’s heart.
The Seventh Plague isn’t Rollins’ scariest plot—The Devil’s Colony and The Eye of God were far more frightening—but it is a satisfying read nonetheless.
I love this series … I have re-read this series I like it so much … the author is such a good story teller!
I’ve never read a book by James Rollins that I didn’t like. In fact I own all of his books. Mr.Rollins entertains as he informs and is often on the cutting edge of scientific discovery. I really enjoy at the end of the adventure the author separates fact from fiction. Highly recommended. They are great books on the beach.
James Rollins’ novels about Sigma Force are always fascinating and almost impossible to put down. Their blend of legend, historical fact, and great storytelling get my “what if” curiosity working overtime. I love the fact that he discloses what is fact, what is legend, and what is his own storyline. I hope he writes many more Sigma Force novels.
