When werewolf Maicoh is ejected from his wolf pack in the Four Corners area of Colorado, he travels north, crossing the river into the canyon but he thinks is Glenwood Springs. He needs some time to recover, be at peace and think. What he gets is a whole bunch of shifters, an alternate reality and his ex-lover Ashkii. Ash had fled the pack years before, knowing he would never be anything but … anything but their punching bag, as an Omega wolf the pack found him to be a less than perfect mate for Mai. Now Mai is in his territory and Ash has to decide if he’ll let Mai back into his life and if he thinks Mai is worth fighting for once the pack decides they want Mai back.
Warning: Now entering shape-shifter territory, where no one is quite as human as they seem, and the loving is red hot!

Crossing the River is the first book in the Spirit Quest series by BA Tortuga. It is a second chance romance with true love story. Maicoh and Ashkii loved each other but were separated because of their pack and spent years apart. But now they are both separated from their pack and find each other once more.
This story had me interested right from the start. It had a little drama and a lot of romance. The characters are interesting and really made me want to know more about them. I can’t wait to see what the second book is about.
I received an advanced reader’s copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.
I enjoyed the mysticism of their home as well as the reuniting of Mai and Ash. These two wolves really needed one another and because of a hard, difficult pack they were forced to spend years apart. Their reunion was awkward enough to be believable and the best part was Mai’s recognition that their wolves felt the truth and acted on it while their human selves would only complicate everything. It’s reality…well, as real as shape-shifting is =].
Anyway, I liked those sweet and tender moments where hearts were bared and bodies shared. Ash’s reasons for leaving were absolutely legitimate and I think he did so much growing up in the time away from Mai, that even though he was a bit ashamed to be a vagabond, he knew who he was and what made him happy.
Mai on the other hand, I don’t know that he ever matured enough to figure that out. Circumstances brought him back to Ash, his will and love should keep them together, but something in and of himself that speaks to growth isn’t exactly present. And the way he treats Halian is both nice and frustrating at the same time. Acknowledging that his previous pack is backward about so many things and yet mentally praising Halian for being subservient and obedient is extremely bothersome. I’m eager to see Halian get his story with Nathan and to see how he’ll change, if he’ll embrace life and himself as Ash did. I can only hope his story is as filled with steamy, happy moments as this story.
This was a great shifter story! Ash & Mai get a second chance! The characters were great and the story was a page turner. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and it won’t be the last.
I quite enjoyed reading this unusual but intriguing second-chance MM shifter novella with Native American mythology undertones. I found the story-line & plot interesting with engaging hippy-like characters. I liked the way the shifters were portray as peaceful & co-existing with each other although they do try to deny their fate only to discover that fate cannot be denied.
There is: a alpha wolf shifter (Maicoh) shunned from his pack decides to travel north & comes into contact with his ex-lover a omega (Ashkii aka Ash) & some decisions will have to be made, various kinds of shifters, friendship, mild twists, some drama, memories, regrets, strange confrontations, verbal banter, frustration, mates, premonitions, threats, compromises, concern, some steam, contentment & a satisfying conclusion.
