The fourth book in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s treasured Little House series, and the recipient of a Newbery Honor—now available as an ebook! This digital version features Garth Williams’s classic illustrations, which appear in vibrant full color on a full-color device and in rich black-and-white on all other devices. The adventures of Laura Ingalls and her family continue as they leave the prairie and … they leave the prairie and travel in their covered wagon to Walnut Grove, Minnesota. Here they settle in a new home made of sod beside the banks of Plum Creek. Soon Pa builds a wonderful new little house with real glass windows and a hinged door. Laura and her sister Mary go to school, help with the chores, and fish in the creek. At night everyone listens to the merry music of Pa’s fiddle. Misfortunes come in the form of a grasshopper plague and a terrible blizzard, but the pioneer family works hard together to overcome these challenges.
The nine Little House books are inspired by Laura’s own childhood and have been cherished by generations of readers as both a unique glimpse into America’s frontier history and as heartwarming, unforgettable stories.

On the Banks of Plum Creek is the fourth book in the Little House Series, and it is just as enchanting as the first three. With the same great characters, as well as some not-so-nice additions (Nellie Olsen, cough cough), this book is full of charm and will delight those of all ages. Follow Laura as she continues to travel in the covered wagon to find a new home in Minnesota.
In this book, Laura and her family travel to the plains of Minnesota, to the banks of a small creek. Named Plum Creek for all of the delicious and juicy plums that grow by the waters, this is where Laura and her family will settle for the next few years. At first, they live in a sod hut, which Pa bought in exchange for his horses and wagon. And then Pa begins to work the farm, hoping to earn enough to buy the wood they need for a proper house.
There are so many wild adventures in this book, and it is so much fun to read. There are a plethora of emotions in this book. From delight at having a fine cookstove for the first time to the horror of the grasshoppers eating all of the crops and laying their eggs, this book has no shortage of feeling and excitement. I loved reading about Laura and Mary and their family when I was little, and coming back to it, there is still so much that I love, as well as things I didn’t notice as a child.
If you loved reading about the Big Woods and the Prairie in Indian Territory, you will love reading about Plum Creek. Even if you haven’t read the previous adventures, this is a good book to start with. Now that Laura’s older, we get to see through her eyes so much more clearly. It’s a great book and it’s so much fun to read about the way life used to be. If you want an adventure on the Minnesota prairies, pick up this book and dive into Laura’s classic story of pioneering.
Five stars
This is probably thus far my favorite of the Laura years books. It has so much in it but not overwhelming…. and Historic things too… like grasshoppers coming so much they ate not only Charles’ wheat crop but all the grass and everything…. walking over anything outside including the cow and the house! Then the next year the eggs they all laid hatched! How the blizzard would come in without warning…and how Pa got caught in town (or walking home from town) in the blizzard and how in the end he was okay but to everyone’s dismay so close to home. This book didn’t have any ‘boring’ parts in in and was just very nice to read. And for the readers who love the television show this book introduces you to the ‘REAL’ Olsen’s and the real Rev Alden and just the ‘real’ town in general
Such a wonderful story to read to or have read to you. Though written years ago children (and even adults) can learn what life was like before cars, television telephones etc. worrying about a loved one just a few feet away to the barn e5c. How things worked that we don’t use anymore. Very nicely written
I hadn’t read these books since 1982. They are still delightful. This one is set in Minnesota where the Ingalls family not only deals with blizzards but also the horror of a hoard of grasshoppers that ruins the crops, then lays eggs to ruin them for the next year. It also sets up the rivalry between Laura and Nellie Oelson.
The first Little House Book I ever read… one of my favorites from my favorite series of books as a girl. Just wonderful.
The series of my youth. I felt like was part of their family.
