He thought he had everything he wanted. Then she showed up. Connor Dixon has sworn to never live with another woman after raising his four younger sisters. He’s retiring—from worrying, fixing problems, and cleaning up messes. Yet when a fellow paramedic’s apartment goes up in flames and she needs a place to stay, he can’t say no. But when it comes to him, she sure can. And that’s never happened … comes to him, she sure can. And that’s never happened to him before.
Gabby Evans’s penchant for poker and her ability to overhaul a transmission definitely make her different from his usual women. Her sights are set on medical school, not him or his crazy mix of family and friends.
But within forty-eight hours of moving in, she’s up to her eyeballs in a family crisis and he’s in uncharted territory with a girl he wants to rescue…who doesn’t need him at all.

Huh. Conner was different then I thought he would be. He was more of a player, less serious then expected. She was as bad ass as expected. But I was hoping for a little more femininity. Overall it’s still a great story.
Up by Five, the last in Erin Nicholas’s Just Everyday Heroes: Night Shift series (formerly known as the Counting on Love series) is amazing. It’s a fitting and wonderful conclusion to this warm and fun and funny and sexy series.
Up by Five is about Conner Dixon, who is basking in his self-proclaimed retirement since each of his four younger sisters is now happily settled down with the man of her dreams (his friends, no less). He knows they each have found a man who will love them and care for them as well as if not better than he can, and he can finally relax, knowing they’re in good hands. But Conner is a stand-up guy, and when one of his shift partners needs a place to stay after her apartment building burns down, he offers up his guest room.
Gabby Evans is just like his sisters and nothing like his sisters. They’ve been co-workers and friends for years, and she’s carefully avoiding doing anything that might cause Conner to see her differently–to see her as a girl, and not just a kick-ass paramedic. Because the last thing she needs is for the big idiot to take one look and fall in love with her. Because she’s off to medical school in a couple months, and it’s what she’s always dreamed of and worked toward.
Conner and Gabby are fantastic together. Their banter gives them both satisfaction, as they dance around their attraction. When they finally cave, forget sparks–it’s the most incredible Fourth-of-July fireworks anyone’s ever seen.
Ms Nicholas does an incredible job giving us a chance to get to know these two and their hearts and desires. And getting to see all the friends and family we’ve come to know in the earlier books in the series is just as much of a treat. Up by Five is absolutely a keeper, and I can’t wait to re-read the entire series again starting from the beginning!
Finally, we get Conner’s story and it’s fantastic! After seeing his four younger sisters paired off, Conner thinks he’ll retire from the role of care taker and fixer he’s had since he was seventeen and his father died suddenly. He hasn’t minded being the man his sisters rely on, but a bad relationship experience has kept all of his interactions with other women light and easy. When his coworker’s apartment burns down and Gabby is left homeless, he begins to see her differently, and light and easy is the last thing on his mind.
This book is the perfect ending to the series, and Nicholas outdid herself with Conner and Gabby’s story. It had everything I thought the last book was lacking, with a lot of involvement from the other characters and catching up with where they are now in their lives. Between their friends and both families, it was one big, raucous, entertaining, beautiful mess. This made for an entertaining read that held me captive throughout.
I wondered what kind of a woman would be the one to win Conner’s heart, and Gabby was awesome. She was the complete opposite of the women he usually dates, which was important when it came time for a little growth and enlightenment on Conner’s part. Best of all, she saw through his flirtation and charm to the real man. They really were perfect for each other and so great together, and I think I took just as much delight as Conner’s friends did in watching him fall. Their story is sweet, sexy, laugh-out-loud funny, heartwarming and a ton of fun, so be sure to grab this one!
Erin Nicholas saved the best for last..Connor and Gabrielle.
Now that all his sisters, the Dixon Divas have found their significant others with his best friends, Connor thinks he’s free of taking care of a woman…until one of his crew, Gabrielle’s apartment complex burns down so he offers her his guest bedroom until she find a new place to live. She’s just part of his crew that is until he sees her after the fire is out and he suddenly sees she is all woman! Gabby on the other hand has been fighting her attraction to Connor because she knows men like him…her brothers, the playboys. She also knows nothing can happen between her and Connor as she is determined to go to medical school and that comes before any man.
So begins the saga of Connor wanting to take care of Gabby and her showing him she doesn’t need a man…can these two find a HEA or will it just be a fling then move on?? Great ending for a great series..Just Everyday Heroes: Night Shift!!
This was such an incredible series! I’m so glad Conner got his own book and found love for himself. The poor guy finally got all of his sisters with men that would take over dealing with the tough stuff with them and he was free! Not for long.
Gabby seems totally self-sufficient and really doesn’t need him…but it might just be a bonus to have somebody on her side no matter what. Someone who will always be there for her. If she lets Conner be that someone, he just might like it too… He can’t believe he’s fallen in love, but it’s right there as plain as the nose on his face. All he has to do now is get Gabby to stay past their two month agreement. The question is, how does he do it?
A fantastic book by Ms. Nicholas. I can’t even find words to describe how good her characterization and story lines are. These books were just a job to read. I’m sure I’ll go back and read them again and I don’t usually reread books. These are just so good. They are humorous and sexy and swoon worthy romantic! You’ve got to read them!
I loved reading Up By Five by Erin Nicholas, book five in her Just Everyday Heroes: Night Shift series, formerly the Counting on Love series. The only person capable of taming the wild Connor Dixon is Gabby Evans. In this final story Connor gets his moment in the spotlight. Connor is a man people love, to hate. He is cocky, annoying, brash, bossy, arrogant, and totally runs his sisters lives. Being the only boy to his brood of sisters he likes being in charge of their lives, or so he thinks. His sisters love him but think he needs to get his own life. He doesn’t think he needs to change at all, who doesn’t love him? He has girls falling all over him, his own bachelor pad, what more does a guy need? One apartment fire answers that question for him very quickly.
Gabrielle “Gabby” Evans doesn’t need anyone to help her do anything. Her brothers constantly underestimate her and she is tired of it. When her apartment burns down she has little options of what to next. Connor Dixon steps up and offers to share his apartment while she gets back on her feet. She doesn’t think she can do that, since she is wildly attracted to him, has been for a while now. But it would be safe, since he doesn’t seem the least bit attracted to her. Working together for so long, they have a familiarity, a friendship that has seen its fair share of drama, she knows this can work.
Because the last thing she needs is for the big idiot to take one look and fall in love with her since she’s off to medical school in a couple months, and it’s what she’s always dreamed of and worked toward.
Both Connor and Gabby have met their match in each other and right from the start anyone can see they were made for each other. Furniture testing aside, they play off each other’s strengths and weaknesses with ease. Sure there are some bumps in the road but that’s how relationships work.
Ms Nicholas does an incredible job giving us a chance to get to know these two and their hearts and desires. And getting to see all the friends and family we’ve come to know in the earlier books in the series is just as much of a treat. Up by Five is absolutely a fitting and wonderful conclusion to this warm and fun and funny and sexy series. I highly recommend this book and the entire series to other readers.
Emotionally thrilling, sinfully sexy, ridiculously funny and every sense engaging romantic journey filled with a group of charters you can not help but what to be taken in as one of the family with…… Love them!!
Connor is a sexy, sweet, charming, romantic alpha male that has helped raise three younger headstrong sisters and is looking forward to more me time…. Gabby is a sexy, heroic, strong willed and so not girly team mate from a family of rough and tumble brothers, cousins and uncles that are a very loud influence in her life. She needs a place to stay for two months till medical school starts and He has one available … loved this laugh out loud fun romance!
Finally we get Cody’s story!! The overbearing, meddling brother has finally accepted that all his sisters have found love with his best friends. Now he can step back and let the men in their lives take care of them. Until fellow paramedic Gabby needs a place to stay and their lives get all jumbled up. Now the one woman who doesn’t need him, is the only one he wants.
Oh, I was waiting for Cody to fall and fall hard! He certainly met his match in Gabby. This was the perfect ending to this series. I am going to miss this crazy group and I look forward to reading this series again and again!!
*sigh* What a great ending to a wonderful series. I will miss the Dixons. They were so much fun. But Connor and Gabby tied with Amanda and Ryan as my favorite couple. They were just so cute together. I loved their friendship, their sexy banter, and their hot chemistry. A sigh worthy romance for sure. And all the characters from previous books make this series so much fun because they were like one big happy family. Loved this world they all live in. Makes me want to be a part of it all the time.
I didn’t think the series could get any hotter!!! Conner is one smooth talker and has a way with women!!! I loved Conner and Gabby’s story. I loved how he called her G. What a great book!!!!
