A continuation of the Civil War Brides saga. It is advisable to read The Bride Price first, as several things will make more sense. This one brings Sophie’s sister, Emma, back in time. There seems to be two main reasons for all this time travel – one is to keep the continuity of history moving correctly as two, there is a family trying to rewrite history for their future benefit. It seems one Cary family has some nefarious plot, and somehow, Sophie and Emma are needed to foil the plotting while also keeping history from being derailed. We shall see. Fairly well edited.
Emma has moved into the house left behind when Jamie and Sophie disappeared. She misses her sister desperately. One day, she walks into the library, blacks out, and finds herself in the carriage house of one Mr. Clayton Madden. Emma is very confused as to why things are so very odd. Who has a carriage house anyway? Emma soon figures out that everyone thinks they are in Washington DC, in 1863! What?Almost immediately after her arrival, Emma is reunited with her sister and brother-in-law. While she is overjoyed that they are found, she is less than overjoyed for find out she really has traveled through time. Meanwhile, Clayton is fairly frantic because he woke up to find that Emma was no longer in his house, and the only person who knew where she had gone refused to tell. After a few days, Christopher Butler, who Clayton works with, helps him figure out where Emma must have gone. Clayton promptly sets out to find her. There is a bit of drama regarding Clayton’s brother Richard (who wanted Sophie in Book 1), and then a rather immediate jump to courting. Shortly thereafter, Clayton and Emma are married. Still, why exactly has Emma been brought back in time? Why is someone so desperate to send her back? What is the larger plot? Will Clayton and Emma survive whatever is thrown their way?
While the plot continues to be of interest, there are several inconsistencies between the first and second books. We meet Dr. Stephen Henderson in 1, but find his last name has been changed to Paxton by 2. Topper Wade lost his right hand in 1, but his left in 2. Rose’s last name was Johanson in 1, but she lost the ‘a’ and was Johnson in 2. Ultimately, I don’t care which detail is chosen, I just prefer details to remain consistent. Overall, though, I want to see who will arrive next, and if we will see more of the overall plot by the Cary family. Enjoy..
Another great book in the Civil War Brides Series! Again I am not normally a fan of time travel but this series has me hooked! I loved reading Emma and Clayton’s romance, it was so much fun to see the struggle between the past and future. Emma is hilarious! She gives Clayton a run for his money but getting to read how he falls for her was a treat. The romance, action and humor kept me turning the pages in this book. I also love all the historical facts and details though out the book. This book is apart of a series but could be read as a standalone. This book is a great second book in the series and I cant wait to see what happens next!
