When a man careens off the road into the frigid waters of the Chautauqua River, Chief Detective David Wolf risks his own life to bring the man to shore. News of Wolf’s bravery travels fast through the burgeoning ski town of Rocky Points, Colorado, and before long he’s pulled into the political grinder, where candidates are eager to exploit Wolf’s character for their own gain. Injured as well in … in the process, it seems his heroic deed was some cruel twist of fate, that is, until he meets Lauren Coulter, a new girl in town and a nurse at the local hospital.
Lauren is smart, beautiful, and just Wolf’s type. The connection between them is there. But just as they get started, so does the killing. And as bodies start emerging, so do the secrets from Lauren’s troubled past.
Has fate steered Wolf to the wrong woman? Or is someone more devious behind the wheel? Lives will depend on how fast Wolf can come up with the answer, and this time, living with failure will prove to be something much worse than death.

Great story telling. Characters and story flow together to make great reading. Have read several of his books and look forward to reading more.
A really good police story.
It has enough personal backstory to engage and make you invested in the character, you can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
Different than the other books in this series but great writing.
I thoroughly enjoyed this page-turner. I will read more of this author’s works.
Loved the series. Can’t wait til the next book.
I encourage you to read all of the David Wolf books. Great characters, maybe a little too far fetched as far as the number of times he gets hurt, but just run with it. You’ll enjoy the books.
easy to read but predictable and corny
Could not put it down. Did not expect the ending at all. Great book.
I liked it. Have read David Wolfe often and will continue to do so
This is a good action filled book with well drawn characters. Recommend it.
The “plan” to rescue the kidnapped girl was not only poor police procedure it was unrealistic and difficult for me to swallow.
I love the David Wolf series.
I love the Detective Wolf series! Great action and intriguing storylines.
Lot’s of pages missing in this book, made it to hard to read so I gave up.
Love Jeff Carson books. Always easy to read and entertaining.
This was the 8th book in the series, but my first entree. It was a good read. The characters are solid and believable, the story moved very quickly and builds tension. I will go back and read the earlier stories.
Always enjoy a Carson Novel
I’ve liked every book in this series and this entry did nothing to change that.
One reason is I like Dave Wolf – a prime requirement for me to keep reading a series. I’ve stopped reading authors who changed their recurring character(s) into ones I didn’t like.
Carson delivers another tension-filled tale as Dave tries to rescue a kidnapped child, is backstabbed by a co-worker, and deals with political candidates angling for his support.
As I’ve said in my review of prior books, I’ll keep reading them if Carson keeps writing them.
